The Neocortex of the Dog

This article describes the structural organization of the neocortex of the dog from purely morphological point of view. Series of 50 urn transverse sections were cut from the frozen right hemiencephala of adult greyhounds, stained by N issl's method, and drawn. His's method was then used to construct life-size lateral, dorsal and medial views of the hemiencephalon from 38 sections located at regular intervals. Once the cytoarchitectonic criteria to be used had been established on the basis of preliminary observations, all the sections of each hemiencephalon were examined microscopically and the cytoarchitectonic types observed in each mapped on the corresponding drawing. These maps were then projected onto lateral, dorsal and medial views of the whole hemiencephalon to produce a classical cytoarchitectonic map of the neocortex made up of 21 types, 7 of them agranular (with no inner granular layer), 2 dysgranular (with a granular layer with diffuse boundans) and the rest granular (with a well-defined layer IV). Various areas of cortex whose characteristics were intermediate between those of adjoinin areas were classified in a residual typus intermedius.     

Persistent pupillary membrane and congenital cataract in a litter of English cocker spaniels

In a litter of seven three-week-old English cocker spaniels, four showed persistent pupillary membrane and congenital cataract. One affected male and two affected females were kept for breeding purposes. Brother/sister mating gave birth to 14 pups. Two pups died the first day. The other 12 were euthanased at an age of one year. None of them showed any sign of eye diseases either by clinical or histological examination. The parents, one male and two females, were euthanased at the age of 20, 24 and 33 months, respectively. Clinical and histological examination of the eyes showed varying degree of loss of vision, persistent pupillary membranes, microphthalmos and cataract.     

Treatment of respiratory distress in a prematurely born foal

A foal born 3 weeks prematurely was treated for respiratory distress, using a combination of oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilatory assistance. Clinical response and arterial blood gas tensions were monitored regularly. Continuous positive-airway pressure and intermittent positive-pressure ventilation administered via a nasotracheal tube were effective in improving arterial oxygenation and ventilatory function.     

Relationship between group B streptococcal serotypes and cell surface hydrophobicity.

Cell surface hydrophobicities of streptococci of serological group B were determined by the adherence of the bacteria to hexadecane droplets. A significant adherence to hexadecane was observed with the group B streptococcal type reference strains Ib, V, Ic, R and X, but not with those of serotype Ia, II, III and IV. Cultivation of the bacteria in microcapsule-inducing media reduced the hexadecane adherence properties. The adherence to hexadecane was not related to fibrinogen binding properties of the cultures. Screening a large number of group B streptococci isolated from humans and bovines revealed that those with polysaccharide type antigen alone were generally hydrophilic, those with protein antigen alone or with protein antigen in combination with polysaccharide antigen were mostly hydrophobic. Cultivation of the bacteria under microaerobic conditions or after a single mouse passage enhanced microcapsule production and correspondingly reduced the hexadecane adherence values. Treatment of the bacteria by guanidinium chloride or by neuraminidase enhanced the hexadecane adherence. The hydrophobic component on group B streptococcal surface appeared to be partly inactivated by heat or proteolytic treatment of the bacteria.     

A study on Theileria parva bovis carrier state

In two trials, Theileria parva bovis (which causes ‘January disease’ of cattle in Zimbabwe) produced a carrier state, over the 7–12 months after infection. Very severe clinical reactions were caused by infections from small numbers (29–43) of adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks, which had engorged on immunized cattle in the field. The transmission from healthy recovered cattle housed indoors was less efficient, even with high numbers of ticks (300). Two out of seven attempts were successful and disease reactions were rather severe. A non-pathogenic Theileria assumed to be Theileria taurotragi was transmitted in three out of seven attempts.     

Disseminated hemangiosarcoma in a cow

An antemortem diagnosis of disseminated hemangiosarcoma with extensive hepatic and splenic involvement was made in a 9-year-old cow evaluated for lethargy, weight loss, regenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes. This is the first report of hemangiosarcoma in a cow with a suspected primary location of the liver and/or spleen.     

LPS structure influences protein secretion in Salmonella enterica

In this study we have compared protein secretion in the wild type of S. Typhimurium and the rfaC mutant. We found out that the rfaC mutant was defective in protein secretion. In addition, the rfaC mutant was defective in its invasion into an IPEC-J2 porcine epithelial cell line and also in motility in semisolid agar. Consistent with this, reduced flagella numbers were observed in the rfaC mutant. In the rfaC mutant, there were no defects in flagellin expression as detected by western blot and immune electron microscopy which demonstrated equal amounts of flagellin in the cytoplasm of both the rfaC mutant and the wild-type S. Typhimurium. However, in the wild-type strain only, the flagellin was assembled to spatially restricted areas on the inner side of cytoplasmic membrane. The oligosaccharide core of LPS is therefore required for the assembly of flagella and T3SS secretion machinery followed by protein secretion.
