Galileo Gravity Results and the Internal Structure of Io

Doppler data generated with the Galileo spacecraft's radio carrier wave were used to measure Io's external gravitational field. The resulting triaxial field is consistent with the assumption that Io is in tidal and rotational equilibrium. The inescapable conclusion is that it has a large metallic core. If the core is a eutectic mixture of iron and iron sulfide, it comprises 20.2 ± 7.4 percent of the satellite's total mass with a radius that is about 52 percent of Io's mean radius of 1821.3 kilometers; if the core is pure iron, it comprises 10.5 ± 3.7 percent of the total mass with a radius of about 36 percent of the mean radius.     

Interferon and c-ets-1 genes in the translocation (9;11)(p22;q23) in human acute monocytic leukemia

Gene probes for interferons alpha and beta 1 and v-ets were hybridized to metaphase chromosomes from three patients with acute monocytic leukemia who had a chromosomal translocation, t(9;11)(p22;q23). The break in the short arm of chromosome 9 split the interferon genes, and the interferon-beta 1 gene was translocated to chromosome 11. The c-ets-1 gene was translocated from chromosome 11 to the short arm of chromosome 9 adjacent to the interferon genes. No DNA rearrangement was observed when these probes were hybridized to genomic DNA from leukemic cells of two of the patients. The results suggest that the juxtaposition of the interferon and c-ets-1 genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of human monocytic leukemia.     

Radar detection of the nucleus and coma of comet hyakutake

Radar observations of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) made at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California have detected echoes from the nucleus and from large grains in the inner coma. The nucleus of this bright comet was estimated to be only 2 to 3 kilometers in diameter. Models of the coma echo indicate backscatter from porous, centimeter-size grains ejected anisotropically at velocities of tens of meters per second. The radar observations suggest that a comet's activity may be a poor indicator of its size and provide evidence that large grains constitute an important component of the mass loss from a typical active comet.

Fossil Evidence for a Late Cretaceous Origin of "Hoofed" Mammals

Seventeen of eighteen orders of living placental mammals are not known before 65 million years ago. The monophyly of each order is well established, but interrelations have been less certain. A superordinal grouping of up to seven extant orders plus a variety of extinct orders, all included within Ungulata ("hoofed" mammals), can be linked to Late Cretaceous mammals from the 85-million-year-old Bissekty Formation, Uzbekistan (and, less certainly, North America and Europe), thus pushing the origin of this major clade back by 20 million years. Ungulatomorphs are not closely related to primates, rodents, or rabbits.     

Observation of virus particles in the spleen, kidney, gills and erythrocytes of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., during a disease outbreak with high mortality

An annual disease problem with high levels of mortality in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., on a freshwater farm was investigated. In 2000, mortalities began early in October and peaked in December, being unevenly distributed between tanks. Histopathological changes included severe hyperplasia of gill epithelium, with fusion of secondary lamellae, and extensive necrosis of the haematopoietic centres in the kidney and spleen, the latter being consistent with a diagnosis of phagocytolytic syndrome (PCLS). Moribund fish were anaemic, with multiple, circular basophilic inclusion bodies, 1–2 μm in diameter and suggestive of erythrocytic inclusion body syndrome (EIBS), being observed on blood smears. Thin section electron microscopy (EM) revealed primarily membrane-bound aggregates of non-enveloped virus particles (73 ± 7 nm) with an electron dense core (35 ± 3 nm) in spleen, kidney and gill tissue and the erythrocytes therein. These particles had morphology and distribution consistent with those previously described separately for both EIBS and PCLS. Virus isolation attempts in a wide range of cell lines were unsuccessful. In the absence of suitable alternative infectious or environmental explanations, it is postulated that the aetiology was primarily viral, with possible contributory secondary environmental factors. It is further hypothesized that the agents of EIBS and PCLS may be the same or closely related viruses.     

Equine neural angiostrongylosis

Verminous encephalomyelitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae was diagnosed in 2 foals at necropsy. The principal clinical feature was tetraparesis, although history and neurological examination revealed progressive and multifocal neurological disease. At presentation, a tentative diagnosis of parasitic larval migration involving the central nervous system (CNS), presumably due to Strongylus vulgaris, was proposed. Dissection of the spinal cord in one case resulted in recovery of intact larvae of both sexes of A. cantonensis. In both foals, histopathology of the brain and spinal cord revealed nematode sections which were consistent with A. cantonensis larvae.
