The effect of irrigation with saline (0.1-7.6 dS m-1) water on the growth of six cultivars of lucerne was assessed over four irrigation seasons at Tatura, Victoria, Australia. Measurements made in the study included shoot dry matter production, shoot ion concentrations, flowering incidence, root distribution and soil salinity and sodicity levels. After four seasons, soil ECe levels had risen to 4.2 dS m-1 at the beginning of the irrigation season and this increased to around 6 dS m-1 at the end of the season for the highest salinity irrigation treatment (7.6 dS m-1). The soils in the two most saline irrigation treatments also became sodic (SAR1:5>3) by the third and fourth seasons. By the second season, cultivars differed significantly in salt tolerance as defined by the rate of decline in dry matter production. The cultivars CUF 101 and Validor were consistently the most salt-tolerant cultivars, although cv. Southern Special produced the greatest amount of dry matter over all salinity treatments. Root densities at depths from 0 to 60 cm were greater under saline (2.5 and 7.6 dS m-1) than under non-saline conditions (0.1 dS m-1). Flower production was increased by salinity. It was concluded that, despite the presence of intraspecific variation for salt tolerance, it is detrimental to irrigate lucerne with water at electrical conductivities greater than 2.5 dS m-1 on a red-brown earth in southern Australia. 相似文献

Rye water-soluble extracts contain a protein fraction that, when added at low concentrations to a straight-dough breadmaking recipe, significantly increased bread volume. Enrichment of the active component is possible by anion-exchange fractionation with diethylaminoethyl-cellulose (DEAE), by ammonium sulfate precipitation, or by using rye bran or shorts milling fractions as the starting material. The active material was not bound to DEAE-cellulose. With ammonium sulfate precipitation, the fractions obtained at 30, 40, and 50% saturation were active in straightdough baking experiments. Iso-electric focusing revealed that fractions active in breadmaking invariably contained alkaline protein fractions (pI > 7.5). Inactivation of enzyme material by boiling the water-soluble extract from rye destroyed all breadmaking activity. The activity of the bread improver was additive to that of potassium bromate but not to that of ascorbic acid. It was not counteracted by catalase, showing that it does not work by a mechanism involving the production of hydrogen peroxide. Thirty cyclic, non-suckled Brahman cows were divided into three groups, all of which were synchronized sequentially with CIDR-B and observed continuously for 100 h to determine different behavioural oestrus signs. Twenty-four hours after implant withdrawal, all synchronized cows in the group, together with all other cows displaying oestrus, were subjected to intensive ultrasonographic observations (every 6 h for 120 h) to pinpoint the moment of ovulation. In the first group, oestrus and ovulation response was 60% (6/10), in the second 44% (4/9) showed oestrus and six ovulated, and in the third group oestrus and ovulation were 80% (8/10). Significant differences were observed between the second and third groups (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in the duration of oestrus, time when oestrus was displayed after implant withdrawal, time of ovulation and onset of oestrus, end of oestrus to ovulation, and intensity of oestrus on a point scale. The relationship between duration of oestrus and time of ovulation was r(2) = 0.16. Ovulation, on average, was 32.1 +/- 14.5 h after the onset of oestrus, 22.3 +/- 16.5 h after the end of oestrus, and 91.8 +/- 16.7 after implant withdrawal, although no significant differences were observed. One non-synchronized animal showed oestrous activity in the second group but failed to ovulate. In the third group, 8 animals showed oestrus, 4 with high concentrations of progesterone. Of the other four one ovulated. In conclusion, oestrous behaviour is not necessarily the best marker to predict the time when ovulation takes place due to variation in the length of the oestrous period and the possible integration of non-ovulatory animals into sexually active groups. 相似文献

The effects of weight gain and subsequent weight loss on glucose tolerance and insulin response were evaluated in 12 healthy cats. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT) were performed at entry into the study, after a significant gain of body weight induced by feeding palatable commercial cat food ad libitum, after a significant loss of body weight induced by feeding a poorly palatable purified diet to discourage eating and promote fasting, and after recovery from fasting when body weight had returned to pre-study values and cats were eating commercial foods. A complete physical examination with measurement of body weight was performed weekly, a CBC and serum biochemistry panel were evaluated at the time of each IVGTT, and a liver biopsy specimen obtained 2 to 4 days after each IVGTT was evaluated histologically for each cat. Mean serum glucose and insulin concentrations after glucose infusion and total amount of insulin secreted during the second 60 minutes and entire 120 minutes after glucose infusion were significantly (P > .05) increased after weight gain, as compared with baseline. At the end of weight loss, cats had hepatic lipidosis and serum biochemical abnormalities consistent with feline hepatic lipidosis. There was a significant (P > .05) increase in mean serum glucose concentration and t1/2, and a significant (P > .05) decrease in mean serum insulin concentration and the glucose disappearance coefficient (K) after glucose infusion for measurements obtained after weight loss, compared with those obtained after weight gain and at baseline. Insulin peak response, insulino-genic index, and total amount of insulin secreted during the initial 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 60 minutes after glucose infusion were decreased markedly (P > .05), compared with measurements obtained after weight gain and at baseline. In addition, the total amount of insulin secreted for 120 minutes after glucose infusion was decreased markedly (P > .05) in measurements obtained after weight loss, compared with those obtained after weight gain. At the end of recovery, all cats were voluntarily consuming food, serum biochemical abnormalities identified after weight loss had resolved, the number and size of lipid vacuoles in hepatocytes had decreased, and results of IVGTT were similar to those obtained at baseline. These findings confirmed the reversibility of obesity-induced insulin resistance in cats, and documented initial deterioration in glucose tolerance and insulin response to glucose infusion when weight loss was caused by severe restriction of caloric intake. 相似文献
