An abscess of the external umbilical remnant and umbilical vein remnant was diagnosed in a 16-month-old colt, using ultrasonography. Because of the colt's size, primary closure of the surgical incision after umbilical cord resection was not complete. Vertical mattress stainless steel sutures and stents were used, and healing was by second intention. Intervening gas-filled viscera made it impossible to visualize ultrasonographically the bladder of umbilical artery remnants in a colt of this age.  相似文献

The changes in the ultrastructure of gonadotrops and in the plasma levels of LH were studied three, five, seven, ten, twenty and forty days after castration in adult male mice. Gonadotrops in sham operated animals contained numerous granules and moderately developed synthetic organelles. Castration induced mobilization of the secretory granules at three days, and degranulation of gonadotrops and a hypertrophy of the synthetic organelles at seven days. By ten days after castration gonadotrops were greatly enlarged, while in addition at forty days they frequently contained large cytoplasmic vesicles filled with lipid-like material. These changes were paralleled by an initial three fold increase in serum LH three days after castration, and a further ten fold increase in the levels of the hormone forty days after castration. In conclusion, the castration-induced morphologic changes in gonadotrops correlate well with increased release of LH. The subtle differences in the control of timing of LH secretion in mice and rats are discussed. A trans-cytoplasmic route for rapid transport of gonadotropic hormones in the mouse is postulated, and the significance of cytoplasmic vesicles in the castrate discussed.  相似文献

Stimulation of the crop by injections of water or saline produced electroencephalogram (EEG) arousal. Inflation of an implanted crop balloon by air alone had no effect if done slowly over 30 s. Inflation by ice water was more effective than by air, water at 40 °C or saline. Crop volume does not appear to be reflected in the EEG.  相似文献

Southern crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris [Retz.] Koel.) is often viewed as an undesirable weed, largely because it encroaches upon field and forage crops, gardens, and lawns. However, visual observations of livestock grazing mixed-species pastures suggest that cattle seem to prefer crabgrass to many other summer forages. The objectives of this study were to assess the nutritive value of crabgrass sampled weekly between July 11, and August 22, 2001, and then to determine ruminal in situ disappearance kinetics of DM and NDF for these crabgrass forages. A secondary objective was to compare these kinetic estimates with those of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.), and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) control hays. All forages were evaluated in situ using five (383 +/- 22.7 kg) ruminally cannulated crossbred (Gelbvieh x Angus x Brangus) steers. Whole-plant crabgrass exhibited more rapid (P < or = 0.002) ruminal disappearance rates of DM (overall range = 0.069 to 0.084 h(-1)) than did bermudagrass (0.054 h(-1)) and orchardgrass (0.060 h(-1)) hays, but disappearance rates were slower (P < 0.001) for crabgrass than for alfalfa hay (0.143 h(-1)). Effective ruminal disappearance of DM was greater (P < 0.001) for crabgrass (overall range = 69.3 to 75.4%) than for all the control hays. Similarly, disappearance rates of NDF for crabgrass (overall range = 0.069 to 0.086 h(-1)) were more rapid (P < 0.001) than observed for bermudagrass and orchardgrass hays; however, NDF in alfalfa disappeared at a faster (P < 0.001) rate (0.107 h(-1)) than crabgrass. These results indicate that crabgrass offers greater effective ruminal degradability of DM and NDF than orchardgrass or alfalfa of moderate quality. More importantly, it potentially offers faster and more extensive ruminal disappearance than perennial warm-season grasses typically found throughout the southeastern United States, and it should likely support improved performance by ruminant livestock in this region.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of hydrothermal ablation of articular cartilage for arthrodesis in horses through investigation of the effects of joint lavage with physiologic saline (0.9% NaCI) solution (80 degrees C) for various treatment times on chondrocyte viability in the articular cartilage of the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints of cadaveric horse limbs. Sample Population-7 pairs of metacarpophalangeal and 8 pairs of metatarsophalangeal joints from 8 Thoroughbreds. PROCEDURE: The horses were euthanatized for reasons unrelated to musculoskeletal disease. On a random basis, 1 joint of each pair underwent intra-articular lavage for 5, 10, or 15 minutes with heated saline solution (80 degrees C); the other joint underwent sham treatment of similar duration with saline solution at 22 degrees C (control). Cartilage samples from the distal articular surface of metacarpus III (or metatarsus III), the proximal surface of the proximal phalanx, and the lateral and medial proximal sesamoid bones were assessed for chondrocyte viability via confocal microscopy and viability staining following enzymatic digestion. RESULTS: Compared with the control joints, findings of both viability assays indicated that the percentage of sites containing viable chondrocytes in heat-treated joints was decreased.Treatment hazard ratios of 0.048 (confocal microscopy) and 0.2 (digestion assay) were estimated. Histologically, periarticular soft tissues had minimal detrimental effects after heat treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ex vivo intra-articular lavage with saline solution at 80 degrees C resulted in the death of almost all articular chondrocytes in the joint. This technique may be a satisfactory method for extensive cartilage ablation when performing arthrodesis by minimally invasive techniques.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Subchondral cystic lesions of the medial femoral condyle (SCMFC) are well documented in horses < or =3 years; arthroscopic debridement or enucleation of the cyst is currently the surgical treatment of choice. However, studies of occurence and outcome following surgery in older horses are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors important in outcome for horses with SCMFC treated by arthroscopic debridement. HYPOTHESIS: Age of horse at presentation has a significant influence on return to work following arthroscopic treatment for SCMFC. Clinical and diagnostic findings are also significant with respect to prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from 6 equine referral centres identified 85 horses that underwent arthroscopic debridement of SCMFC. Clinical examination, radiographic and arthroscopic findings were analysed together with follow-up data. Univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine factors affecting return to soundness. Event-time analysis was performed to evaluate return to work. RESULTS: Older horses (>3 years) were less likely to return to soundness (P = 0.02) or to work (P = 0.04) than younger horses (< or = 3 years). Of 39 horses age 0-3 years, 25 (64%, 95% CI 49-79%) returned to soundness. Of 46 horses age >3 years, 16 (35%,95% CI 21-49%) returned to soundness. In addition, cartilage damage at sites other than the SCMFC negatively affected prognosis (P = 0.05). The hospital where treatment was performed had no influence on return to soundness. CONCLUSIONS: Older horses carry a worse prognosis for both return to soundness and return to work. Potential relevance: It is important for clients to be made aware of the difference in outcome between age groups.  相似文献

Maternal immunity was produced in Jersey heifers by exposing them to bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus before conception. In the following pregnancy this immunity protected the fetuses from transplacental infection arising from challenge of the dams at 100 days gestation with homologous virus. Unprotected Jersey heifers showed a high incidence of death and fetal intrauterine growth retardation associated with transplacental viral infection. Functional normality of the locomotor system was assessed retrospectively from ciné films of each calf after birth, and scored for each of an overlapping series of clinical signs. The progeny of non-immune dams scored significantly lower than calves from the vaccinated heifers.  相似文献
