Climate warming and associated increases in nutrient mineralization may increase the availability of soil nitrogen (N) in high latitude ecosystems, such as boreal forests. These changes in N availability could feed back to affect the decomposition of litter and organic matter by soil microbes. Since fungi are important decomposers in boreal forest ecosystems, we conducted a 69-day incubation study to examine N constraints on fungal decomposition of organic substrates common in boreal ecosystems, including cellulose, lignin, spruce wood, spruce needle litter, and moss litter. We added 0, 20, or 200 μg N to vials containing 200 mg substrate in factorial combination with five fungal species isolated from boreal soil, including an Ascomycete, a Zygomycete, and three Basidiomycetes. We hypothesized that N addition would increase CO2 mineralization from the substrates, particularly those with low N concentrations. In addition we predicted that Basidiomycetes would be more effective decomposers than the other fungi, but would respond weakly or negatively to N additions. In support of the first hypothesis, cumulative CO2 mineralization increased from 635 ± 117 to 806 + 108 μg C across all fungal species and substrates in response to 20 μg added N; however, there was no significant increase at the highest level of N addition. The positive effect of N addition was only significant on cellulose and wood substrates which contained very little N. We also observed clear differences in the substrate preferences of the fungal species. The Zygomycete mineralized little CO2 from any of the substrates, while the Basidiomycetes mineralized all of the substrates except spruce needles. However, the Ascomycete (Penicillium) was surprisingly efficient at mineralizing spruce wood and was the only species that substantially mineralized spruce litter. The activities of β-glucosidase and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase were strongly correlated with cumulative respiration (r = 0.78 and 0.74, respectively), and Penicillium was particularly effective at producing these enzymes. On moss litter, the different fungal species produced enzymes that targeted different chemical components. Overall, our results suggest that fungal species specialize on different organic substrates, and only respond to N addition on low N substrates, such as wood. Furthermore, the response to N addition is non-linear, with the greatest substrate mineralization at intermediate N levels.  相似文献

Background

A territory as a prerequisite for breeding limits the maximum number of breeders in a given area, and thus lowers the proportion of breeders if population size increases. However, some territorially breeding animals can have dramatic density fluctuations and little is known about the change from density-dependent processes to density-independence of breeding during a population increase or an outbreak. We suggest that territoriality, breeding suppression and its break-down can be understood with an incomplete-control model, developed for social breeders and social suppression.

Results

We studied density dependence in an arvicoline species, the bank vole, known as a territorial breeder with cyclic and non-cyclic density fluctuations and periodically high densities in different parts of its range. Our long-term data base from 38 experimental populations in large enclosures in boreal grassland confirms that breeding rates are density-regulated at moderate densities, probably by social suppression of subordinate potential breeders. We conducted an experiment, were we doubled and tripled this moderate density under otherwise the same conditions and measured space use, mortality, reproduction and faecal stress hormone levels (FGM) of adult females. We found that mortality did not differ among the densities, but the regulation of the breeding rate broke down: at double and triple densities all females were breeding, while at the low density the breeding rate was regulated as observed before. Spatial overlap among females increased with density, while a minimum territory size was maintained. Mean stress hormone levels were higher in double and triple densities than at moderate density.

Conclusions

At low and moderate densities, breeding suppression by the dominant breeders, But above a density-threshold (similar to a competition point), the dominance of breeders could not be sustained (incomplete control). In our experiment, this point was reached after territories could not shrink any further, while the number of intruders continued to increase with increasing density. Probably suppression becomes too costly for the dominants, and increasing number of other breeders reduces the effectiveness of threats. In wild populations, crossing this threshold would allow for a rapid density increase or population outbreaks, enabling territorial species to escape density-dependency.  相似文献

Mexico has the largest diversity of genetic resources for maize in the world, with about 59 different landraces. However, little is known about their wet‐milling characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine whether 15 Mexican blue maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes of Elotero de Sinaloa landrace collected in the northwestern region of Mexico have suitable wet‐milling properties. Great variability of physical, compositional, and wet‐milling characteristics among these blue maize genotypes was observed. The FAUAS‐457 and FAUAS‐488 maize genotypes had similar starch yield and starch recovery as reported for the wet‐milling industry, which indicated that they may be useful as a source of extractable starch. Residual protein levels in the starch fractions were in the range of 0.39–0.68%, and total solids recovery exhibited a mean value of 98.8%, indicating acceptable efficacy of the wet‐milling process. This process afforded starches from blue maize genotypes with low protein contents. Wet‐milling fractions correlated with the physical and chemical properties of the kernels. Our results indicate that Mexican blue maize genotypes contain characteristics that make them appropriate and utilizable at the industrial level, and they can also be valuable for improving wet‐milling characteristics of maize through breeding programs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine arsenic species contents in raw and cooked edible seaweed and the bioaccessibility (maximum soluble concentration in gastrointestinal medium) of arsenosugars (glycerol ribose, phosphate ribose, sulfonate ribose, and sulfate ribose). For the analysis, a new chromatographic separation was developed in anion exchange, coupled with thermooxidation-hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry. An in vitro digestion (pepsin, pH 2; pancreatin-bile extract, pH 7) was applied to estimate arsenosugar bioaccessibility. Cooking of Undaria pinnatifida and Porphyra sp. did not alter the arsenic species present in the methanol-water extract, but it produced a substantial increase (2 and 5 times) in the As(V) extracted from Hizikia fusiforme. In all of the seaweeds analyzed, arsenosugar bioaccessibility was high (>80%) and did not vary as a result of cooking. Arsenosugar degradation as a result of in vitro digestion was not observed.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to analyze the spatial and temporal response of Q. pyrenaica community to fire. In order to do so, an ecological characterization of 15 forests in different succession stages (5 Initial: 0–20 years, 5 Medium: 20–60 years and 5 Mature: over 60 years), paying special attention to structural and diversity features, was carried out. The results show that temporal changes are very important, and particularly affect the structure and relative abundance of the vegetation. The main differences consist in the change from a homogenous structure, with high cover and overlayering of woody species, at Initial stage, to a more pluristratified, complex and organized structure, with lower cover and overlayering of woody species at Mature stage. The changes in abundances showed a decrease in shrubby species, such as the Erica australis, Genista florida and Erica arborea at Initial stage, and the incorporation of tree species, such as Crataegus monogyna, Acer pseudoplatanus and Alnus glutinosa at Mature stage. However, there are no significative differences between stages for specific richness and diversity values. Spatial heterogeneity is high and similar in all three defined stages.  相似文献

A survey was conducted on the chromosome makeup and breeding data of pigs housed at the Arkell Research Station, University of Guelph, to determine the reproductive impact of a reciprocal translocation previously identified as t(Xp+;14q-). Blood samples were cultured and chromosome spreads were examined to identify carriers in the herd. Gonadal features of carrier boars and piglets and their age-matched normal counterparts were studied, and the reproductive history of carrier sows, including the number of breedings required for conception, mean litter size, prevalence of still births and malformations, and sex distribution among the piglets, was compared with that of normal (noncarrier) sows. Our observations on testicular histology confirmed that X-autosome translocation-carrier boars are sterile, and the analysis of reproductive data showed that the most striking effects of t(Xp+;14q-) on sows are the 50% increase in the number of breedings required for conception and the over 25% reduction in litter size compared with that of normal sows. The reproductive impact of this and similar translocations on the herd and on the swine industry in general is discussed.  相似文献

The crude ethanol extract from the leaves of Zanthoxylum liebmannianum exhibited inhibitory effect on the reproduction of trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica (IC(50)=3.48 microg/ml) and Giardia lamblia (IC(50)=58.00 microg/ml). From this extract, asarinin, hyperin, beta-sitosterol, and beta-sitosterol glucoside were isolated. Among them, asarinin was the most active with IC(50) values of 19.86 microg/ml for E. histolytica and 35.45 microg/ml for G. lamblia. Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. The strongest gamma-ray emission is not observed when the two stars are closest to one another, implying a strong orbital modulation of the emission or absorption processes.  相似文献
