The laurel forest of Anaga is the most emblematic community of the Canarian Archipelago. Restoration programs are being developed
to increase laurel forest area on the island of Tenerife. Structural and spatial characteristics determine many aspects of
the community, including regeneration patterns, disturbance level, stand history. In spite of the importance of this information
for restoration, few quantitative studies have been conducted on laurel forest dynamics. We analyzed two stands of the Anaga
laurel forest of different aspect. The main difference between the two sites was the wind exposure, one leeward and the other
windward. Regeneration, spatial distribution of regeneration, tree species composition, asexual regeneration and environmental
parameters were analyzed in three 50 × 50 m plots at each site. Both sites differ in important aspects such as species richness,
species composition, asexual regeneration and dead tree composition, while they are not different in basal area, density,
density of regeneration and density of dead trees. Both sites have had similar management in the last century. Asexual regeneration
is able to maintain the present species composition, while sexual regeneration is able to offer future changes in the canopy
composition. Regeneration strategies and the effect of some environmental characteristics should be considered in restoration

Greece currently has no national forest certification standard.This paper explains how a draft forest management standard forGreece was developed to be compatible with both the Forest StewardshipCouncil and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certificationschemes requirements. The draft standard was tested in two contrastingforest areas to investigate its ease of operation, to indicatenecessary refinements to the standard and to reveal major areasof weakness in current forest management practices. This study aims to improve the knowledge on the germination ecology of understory species of Maritime Pine forests, focusing on the importance of seed provenance, including in relation to germination enhancement by heating.? Methods
The selected species were Cistus ladanifer L., Erica australis L., Erica umbellata L., Pterospartum tridentatum L. (Willk), and Genista triacanthos Brot. Seeds were collected from two or three distant populations. Besides a control treatment, two heating regimes were applied, i.e., 100°C during 5?min and 80°C during 30?min.? Results
Heating treatments significantly enhanced germination in four out of the five species. Differences between provenances were most evident for C. ladanifer and E. australis, especially following the heating treatments. Overall, the seeds from the southern provenances germinated better and, at the same time, were smaller.? Conclusion

Reforestation efforts in dryland ecosystems frequently encounter drought and limited soil productivity, although both factors usually interact synergistically to worsen water stress for outplanted seedlings. Land degradation in drylands (e.g. desertification) usually reduces soil productivity and, especially, soil water availability. In dry sub-humid regions, forest fires constitute a major disturbance affecting ecosystem dynamics and reforestation planning. Climate change projections indicate an increase of drought and more severe fire regime in many dryland regions of the world. In this context, the main target of plantation technology development is to overcome transplant shock and likely adverse periods, and in drylands this is mostly related to water limitations. In this paper, we discuss some selected steps that we consider critical for improving success in outplanting woody plants, both under current and projected climate change conditions including: (1) Plant species selection, (2) Improved nursery techniques, and (3) Improved planting techniques. The number of plant species used in reforestation is increasing rapidly, moving from a reduced set of well-known, easy-to-grow, widely used species, to a large variety of promising native species. Available technologies allow for reintroducing native plants and recovering critical ecosystem functions for many degraded drylands. However, climate change projections introduce large uncertainties about the sustainability of current reforestation practices. To cope with these uncertainties, adaptive restoration approaches are suggested, on the basis of improved plant quality, improved techniques for optimizing rain use efficiency in plantations, and exploring native plant species, including provenances and genotypes, for their resilience to fire and water use efficiency. 相似文献

Shrubs are important microsites that facilitate seedling performance in abiotically stressed environments. However, shrub facilitation might work differently in ecosystems with high biotic stress (e.g., ungulate-dominated environments). We wonder whether ungulates through their preferences for different shrubs affect the facilitation process of seedlings, and whether this process remains consistent across different levels of abiotic stress. We study seedling performance (survival and growth) of a Mediterranean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) in three microsites (open, preferred and non-preferred shrubs by ungulates) for two contrasting climatic environments and throughout a complete growing season (increasing abiotic stress). Overall, there was a positive effect of shrubs in seedling survival. We found a microsite effect on seedling growth but this effect differed depending on the abiotic environment, with seedlings growing better in open microsites in the less stressful site. The larger abiotic context (climate) played an important role in determining which microsite is the most favorable for seedling growth but not necessarily for the eventual survival of seedlings. Wild ungulates started to damage seedlings early in the growing season, whereas abiotic stress (desiccation) affected mostly those plants that were not previously attacked by animals, showing the hierarchical effect (earlier and longer effect) of the biotic over the abiotic mortality agents. Non-preferred shrubs worked better as nurse shrubs only under high ungulate pressure. From the abiotic perspective, preferred and non-preferred shrubs did not apparently differ in the facilitation effect. A micropropagation method for Jaal (Salvadora persica)—a tree of arid horticulture and forestry has been developed. Nodal segments of fresh shoot sprouts originated from axillary
buds obtained from a plant around 35–40 years old lopped plant were used as explants for establishment of in vitro cultures.
Surface-sterilized explants produced optimum number of shoots through activation of axillary buds on Murashige and Skoog’s
(MS) medium containing 8.88 μM BA (6-benzyladenine) + additives (25 mgl−1 each of adenine sulphate, arginine, citric acid, 50 mgl−1 ascorbic acid). The shoot multiplication was influenced by the successive transfer of the mother explants for 4–5 passages.
The maximum number (23.1 ± 0.73 shoots per explant) of shoots were regenerated on MS supplemented with 1.11 μM BA + 1.16 μM
Kn (Kinetin) + 0.54 μM NAA (α-naphthalene acetic acid). About 90% shoots pulse-treated with a combination of 2460.27 μM Indole-3-butyric
acid (IBA) + 494.56 μM NOA (2-naphthoxy acetic acid) were rooted ex vitro on soilrite within 15–18 days. Over 80% cloned plantlets

Seed maturity indices of Populus ciliata were investigated in collections from Sukhatal and Bhowali. Across both seed sources, mean capsule size varied from 68.0±1.5 mm2 to 72.0±0.9 mm2, while mean number of capsules/100 grams varied from 268±8 to 295±12. Mean weight of 100 capsules varied from 25.0±1.4 g to 27.0±1.4 g. Weight of 100 capsules among sources and individual trees differed significantly (P < 0.05), while number of capsules/100 grams and weight of 100 capsules was negatively correlated (r2 = 0.69). As capsules matured moisture content decreased from 83.2±1.1% to 54.3±0.3% at Sukhatal and from 77.7±0.4% to 46.4±0.3% at Bhowali. The optimum germination was at 58–60% moisture content. Maturation was related to capsule colour changes as well as moisture content. These parameters were judged to be good indicators of when to collect P. ciliata seeds. 相似文献

We analyzed assumptions and measurement errors in estimating canopy transpiration (E(L)) from sap flux (J(S)) measured with Granier-type sensors, and in calculating canopy stomatal conductance (G(S)) from E(L) and vapor pressure deficit (D). The study was performed in 12-year-old Pinus taeda L. stands with a wide range in leaf area index (L) and growth rate. No systematic differences in J(S) were found between the north and south sides of trees. However, J(S) in xylem between 20 and 40 mm from the cambium was 50 and 39% of J(S) in the outer 20-mm band of xylem in slow- and fast-growing trees, respectively. Sap flux measured in stems did not lag J(S) measured in branches, and time and frequency domain analyses of time series indicated that variability in J(S) in stems and branches is mostly explained by variation in D. Therefore, J(S) was used to estimate transpiration, after accounting for radial patterns. There was no difference between D and leaf-to-air vapor pressure gradient, and D did not have a vertical profile in stands of either low or high L suggesting a strong canopy-atmosphere coupling. Therefore, D estimated at one point in the canopy can be used to calculate G(S) in such stands. Given the uncertainties in J(S), relative humidity, and temperature measurements, to keep errors in G(S) estimates to less than 10%, estimates of G(S) should be limited to conditions in which D >/= 0.6 kPa. 相似文献

Over-exploitation and rural growth have severely damaged native vegetations of Aravalli hills in Rajasthan, India. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different restoration practices (i.e., rainwater harvesting (RWH) and planting of tree seedlings) on improve- ment in soil water and nutrients and growth and biomass of herbaceous vegetation. Contour trench (CT), Gradonie (G), Box trench (BT), V-ditch (VD) and a control were imposed on 75 plots (each of 700 m 2 ) in natural slope gradient defined as <10%, 10% 20% and >20% slopes in 2005. Each plot had three micro-sites of 1-m 2 at up (USP), middle (MSP) and lower (LSP) part of the plot for observation in 2008. The existed gradient (due to soil texture and topographic features) of soil pH, EC, SOC, NH 4 - N, NO 3 -N and PO 4 -P in June 2005 between >20% to <10% slopes were decreased in 2008 after applying RWH techniques. Such improvement in soil status promoted vegetation growth and biomass in higher slope gra- dients. Soil water, species diversity and herbage biomass increased from USP to LSP, and RWH techniques had positive role in improving SOC, nutrients, vegetation population, evenness and growth at MSP. Despite of lowest SWC, regular rain and greater soil water usage enhanced green and dry herbage biomasses in 10% 20% and >20% slopes, compared with <10% slope. The highest diversity in CT treatment was related to herbage biomass, which was enhanced further by highest concentrations of SOC and PO 4 -P. Further, CT treatment was found to be the best treat- ment in minimizing biomass variance in different slopes. Conclusively, soil texture and topographic features controlled soil water and nutrients availability. Rainwater harvesting techniques increased soil water storage and nutrient retention and also enhanced vegetation status and biomass by minimizing the effects of hillslopes. Thus depending upon the site conditions, suitable RWH technique could be adopted to increase herb- age biomass while rehabilitating the degraded hills. 相似文献
