Variation in the immune status of two Australian pig breeds 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Objective To investigate the variation in immune competence of two Australian pig breeds.
Design A panel of immune tests were used to assess breed and sire differences in weaner piglets of Large White and Duroc breeds.
Procedure All piglets were immunised against porcine leptospirosis. Blood samples were taken for studies on lymphocyte phenotypes, mitogenic responses of blood cells and serological analysis.
Results Significantly larger blood leucocyte numbers were found in Large White piglets compared with Duroc piglets after vaccinations. No significant difference in concanavalin A induced blood cell proliferation was found between these two breeds before or after vaccinations. Some significant breed variation in blood lymphocyte phenotypes was found. While the age-related changes of lymphocyte phenotypes were similar for the two breeds, the Large White breed had significantly larger numbers of CD2+ and CD4+ cells than the Duroc breed after the two vaccinations. There were also significant sire effects on CD8+ cells within the Large White breed after the first vaccination. No significant breed difference was detectable in serum IgG concentrations but sire differences within each breed before the primary vaccination were found. The serum antibody response to vaccination against leptospirosis was generally small, and showed no variations due to either breed or sire. No gender effects were found during the entire study.
Conclusion The study demonstrated significant differences in some important immune components of the pig breeds studied. This may in turn indicate the variation in their immune competence or disease resistance. However, further investigation into the heritability and correlation with specific immune responses is required. 相似文献

Increasing prevalence of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and potato virus Y (PVY) has been reported in seed and commercial potato production, resulting in the rejection of potatoes for certification and processing. Host plant resistance to PLRV and PVY and their primary vector, green peach aphid,Myzus persicae, could limit the spread of these viruses. Host plant resistance to PLRV, PVY, and green peach aphid has been identified in non-tuber-bearingSolanum etuberosum (PI 245939) and in its backcross 2 (BC2) progeny. Resistance to green peach aphid involved a reduction in fecundity and adult aphid size. In addition, one BC2 individual was identified as possessing a genetic factor that was detrimental to nymph survival. PVY resistance was identified in all five BC2 progenies evaluated in a field screening under intense virus pressure. PLRV resistance was identified in two of the five BC2 progeny. This resistance was stable in field and cage evaluations with large populations of viruliferous aphids. Based on the segregation of virus resistances in the BC2 , PVY and PLRV resistances appear to result from the action of independent genetic mechanisms that reduce the levels of primary and secondary virus infection. Two BC2 individuals, Etb 6-21-3 and Etb 6-21-5 were identified as having multiple resistances to PLRV, PVY, and green peach aphid derived fromS. etuberosum. This germplasm could prove useful to potato breeders in the development of virus-resistant cultivars. 相似文献

Triarimol and triforine inhibit ergosterol biosynthesis in fungi and cause accumulation of free fatty acids, 24-methylenedihydrolanosterol, obtusifoliol and 14α-methyl-δ8,24(28)-ergostadienol. Triparanol also inhibits ergosterol synthesis and causes accumulation of free fatty acids, but not of the latter 3 sterols. Triparanol appears to inhibit prior to lanosterol in the sterol biosynthetic pathway of Ustilago maydis and at unidentified sites subsequent to lanosterol which lead to the accumulation of a sterol which migrates with desmethylsterols on TLC plates. Quantitative abnormalities in sterols and free fatty acids in U. maydis are not produced by the fungicides carbendazim, chloroneb, carboxin and cycloheximide. A deficiency in nitrogen leads to a marked increase in triglycerides, but a normal distribution pattern for other lipids.Inhibition of oxidative demethylation of the sterol 14α-methyl group is probably the prime mechanism of inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis by triarimol. Rates of formation of obtusifoliol and 14α-methyl-δ8,24(28)-ergostadienol in triarimol-treated U. maydis cells suggest that C-4 demethylation occurs along an abnormal pathway which operates effectively only at high substrate concentrations. The growth retardant action of triarimol and ancymidol in higher plants most likely results from inhibition of a reaction in the gibberellin biosynthetic pathway analogous to sterol C-14 demethylation.Free fatty acid accumulation in U. maydis cells treated with inhibitors of sterol synthesis are derived mainly from polar lipid degradation and from de novo synthesis as a consequence of the disproportionality between fatty acid synthesis and utilization. The free fatty acids may play a significant role in the lethality of these inhibitors in this organism. 相似文献

Imazalil had no effect on the initial growth of mycelia of Penicillium italicum (for 10 hr) or Aspergillus nidulans (for 2 hr). In P. italicum during this period neither respiration nor cell permeability was affected, but uptake of [32P]phosphate, [14C]leucine, or [14C]uridine was partially inhibited. The initial (5 hr) inhibition of substrate uptake coincided with a 50% reduction in ergosterol content. Within 0.5 hr, incorporation of [14C]acetate into C-4-desmethyl sterols was strongly inhibited in mycelia of A. nidulans treated with 0.5 μg/ml of imazalil. However, radioactivity in C-4-methyl and dimethyl sterols exceeded that of control cultures. Concentrations of imazalil as low as 0.005 μg/ml caused short-term (1 hr) declines of incorporation into desmethyl sterols and increases into the C-4-methyl and dimethyl sterols. Incorporation into phospholipids, triglycerides, and free fatty acids was not affected. These data suggest that the primary antifungal action of imazalil is inhibition of demethylation in the biosynthesis of ergosterol. 相似文献

Objective To describe the buller steer syndrome in a Western Canadian feedlot. Design A retrospective epidemiological study. Animals 78,445 male cattle that entered a 24,000-head feedlot in western Canada from 1991 to 1993. Procedure All cattle were given a hormonal growth promotant containing 20 mg oestradiol benzoate and 200 mg progesterone within 24 h of arrival at the feedlot. A ‘buller’ was a steer that was observed at daily pen checking to be ridden persistently by pen mates or had evidence of having been persistently ridden by pen mates. At the completion of the feeding period, animal health records for bullers were collected and analysed. Results The prevalence of bullers in the total population was 2139/78,445 (2.7%, range per pen 0 to 11.2%). The prevalence of bullers increased with increasing weight and age. The relapse risk after first treatment (three days in the feedlot hospital plus treatment for concurrent disease) was 30% on average (27 to 35%). Individual records from 9734 yearling steers that entered the feedlot in 1991 and 1992 showed that bullers were significantly (P < 0.05) heavier at processing than non-bullers. Bullers occurred as a point source epidemic with the cause occurring soon after cattle arrived at the feedlot and were mingled into pen groups. This gave a ‘days on feed’ distribution. The peak incidence of bullers occurred much sooner after arrival and dropped off much quicker in older cattle. The daily incidence of bullers was temporal, but was not related to season of the year, weather conditions or any other feedlot management practice. It was related to the seasonal arrival of cattle at the feedlot, their age at entry to the feedlot and the post arrival occurrence of bullers. Reimplantation with hormonal growth promotants and castration of intact bulls did not produce an epidemic of bullers. Conclusion The findings of this study support the theory that bullers are the result of agonistic interactions, which occur concurrent with the establishment and maintenance of a social hierarchy within pens of feedlot cattle. 相似文献
