The manganese site of the photosynthetic water-splitting enzyme 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
As the originator of the oxygen in our atmosphere, the photosynthetic water-splitting enzyme of chloroplasts is vital for aerobic life on the earth. It has a manganese cluster at its active site, but it is poorly understood at the molecular level. Polarized synchrotron radiation was used to examine the x-ray absorption of manganese in oriented chloroplasts. The manganese site, in the "resting" (S1) state, is an asymmetric cluster, which probably contains four manganese atoms, with interatomic separations of 2.7 and 3.3 angstroms; the vector formed by the 3.3-angstrom manganese pair is oriented perpendicular to the membrane plane. Comparisons with model compounds suggest that the cluster contains bridging oxide or hydroxide ligands connecting the manganese atoms, perhaps with carboxylate bridges connecting the 3.3-angstrom manganese pair. 相似文献

Comparing photosynthetic and photovoltaic efficiencies is not a simple issue. Although both processes harvest the energy in sunlight, they operate in distinctly different ways and produce different types of products: biomass or chemical fuels in the case of natural photosynthesis and nonstored electrical current in the case of photovoltaics. In order to find common ground for evaluating energy-conversion efficiency, we compare natural photosynthesis with present technologies for photovoltaic-driven electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Photovoltaic-driven electrolysis is the more efficient process when measured on an annual basis, yet short-term yields for photosynthetic conversion under optimal conditions come within a factor of 2 or 3 of the photovoltaic benchmark. We consider opportunities in which the frontiers of synthetic biology might be used to enhance natural photosynthesis for improved solar energy conversion efficiency. 相似文献

AbstractPotato productivity in India is static due to unbalanced use of nutrients and intensive cropping system. Nutrient use efficiency and yield can be increased by application of nutrients based on quantitative approaches. We calibrated the quantitative evaluation of fertility of tropical soils (QUEFTS) model for the estimation of NPK requirements for different targeted yields of potato. Published data sets were used to calibrate the model. The results of the study showed that to produce one ton of potato tubers, 18, 4, and 24?kg N, P, and K, respectively, would be needed with internal efficiencies of 55, 285, and 42?kg tuber dry yield/kg N, P, and K removed. The observed yields of potato with different amount of nutrients were in agreement with the values predicted by the model. Therefore, the QUEFTS model based NPK fertilizer recommendations can be adopted for site-specific nutrient management of potato. 相似文献

- Identification of the geographic extent of population boundaries, the distribution of genetic lineages, and the amount of genetic exchange among breeding groups is needed for effective conservation of vulnerable marine migratory species. This is particularly true of the flatback turtle (Natator depressus), which only breeds in Australia but has extensive migrations that can include international waters.
- This study investigated the phylogeography and genetic structure among 17 flatback turtle rookeries across their range by sequencing an 810 bp portion of the mitochondrial DNA in 889 samples and genotyping 10 microsatellite loci in 598 samples.
- There was low phylogenetic divergence among haplotypes and evidence of recent population expansion, likely in the late Pleistocene. A predominant haplotype was found across all rookeries, but other haplotype groups were regionally specific.
- In general, there was agreement in patterns of genetic differentiation in the mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite data, and in some pairwise comparisons a higher mutation rate of microsatellites provided stronger evidence of differentiation.
- These results suggest natal philopatry operates in the choice of breeding locations for males as well as females.
- Evidence of genetic connectivity among neighbouring rookeries led to the identification of seven genetic stocks. Geographic boundaries of rookeries used by genetic stocks varied widely (160–1,300 km), highlighting a need for field studies to better understand movement patterns.
- Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance identified significant genetic differentiation based upon genetic stock, nesting phenology (summer vs. winter nesters), and a west–east discontinuity across Torres Strait. A pattern of isolation by distance was identified, which was most strongly observed in the microsatellite data.
- In combination with tagging and telemetry studies, these results will allow better quantification of stock‐specific threats along migratory routes and in foraging habitats. Implications of climate change will be stock specific and may depend upon the extent of genetic connectivity between neighbouring stocks.

(Co)variance components and genetic parameters for various growth traits of Avikalin sheep maintained at Central Sheep and
Wool Research Institute, Avikanagar, Rajasthan, India, were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood, fitting six animal
models with various combinations of direct and maternal effects. Records of 3,840 animals descended from 257 sires and 1,194
dams were taken for this study over a period of 32 years (1977–2008). Direct heritability estimates (from best model as per
likelihood ratio test) for weight at birth, weaning, 6 and 12 months of age, and average daily gain from birth to weaning,
weaning to 6 months, and 6 to 12 months were 0.28 ± 0.03, 0.20 ± 0.03, 0.28 ± 0.07, 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.21 ± 0.03, 0.16 and 0.03 ± 0.03,
respectively. Maternal heritability for traits declined as animal grows older and it was not at all evident at adult age and
for post-weaning daily gain. Maternal permanent environmental effect (c
2) declined significantly with advancement of age of animal. A small effect of c
2 on post-weaning weights was probably a carryover effect of pre-weaning maternal influence. A significant large negative genetic
correlation was observed between direct and maternal genetic effects for all the traits, indicating antagonistic pleiotropy,
which needs special care while formulating breeding plans. A fair rate of genetic progress seems possible in the flock by

Two balance experiments were conducted using 24 gestating gilts in each experiment to determine the apparent digestible and metabolizable energy content, apparent digestible protein content, net protein utilization and apparent biological value of screened swine waste solids (SSWS). Waste solids were collected by screening flushed whole swine waste using a vibrating screen separator. Waste solids containing 30% dry matter were collected daily and mixed with a basal diet. In Exp. 1, SSWS were fed at a level estimated to replace 0, 25, 50 or 86% of the metabolizable energy content of the basal diet. Digestibility of the energy in the total diet decreased quadratically (85.2, 70.2, 60.7 and 58.3%, respectively, P less than .0001) with increasing SSWS. The percentages of gross energy supplied by SSWS that were digested and metabolized, as calculated by difference, were not affected significantly by the amount of SSWS fed (48.0, 48.0, 53.2% digested and 45.1, 45.2, 48.1% metabolized, respectively, for 25, 50 and 86% of gross energy intake from SSWS). The mean digestible and metabolizable energy contents of SSWS for gestating gilts were determined to be 1,998 and 1,854 kcal/kg dry matter. In Exp. 2, gilts were fed SSWS to replace 0, 25 or 50% of the crude protein in the basal diet. Apparent digestibility of the protein in the total diet decreased linearly (83.8, 66.1 and 51.1%, respectively, P less than .0001) as the amount of SSWS in the diet increased. Bulbs of Tulipa gesneriana L. ‘Prominence’ were either specially pre-cooled at 5 ± 0.5°C or held at 17 ± 0.5°C in a flow-through system equipped for atmospheric sampling. Bulbs at 17°C had low CO2 and C2H4 production rates until January when they began to increase. An initial peak of C2H4 production occurred during the 2nd week of pre-cooling, followed by a major increase after 12 weeks. In addition, bulbs were specially pre-cooled for periods of 2–16 weeks (2-week increments). The bulbs were then transferred to 17 ± 0.5°C, where initial periods of special pre-cooling of greater than 12 weeks resulted in a dramatic increase in respiration rate over bulbs cooled for less than 12 weeks. These increases in C2H4 and CO2 liberation appeared to be related to completion of the bulb cold-requirement. The cytoprotective effect of piperine on benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) induced experimental lung cancer was investigated in male Swiss albino mice. Oral administration of piperine (100 mg/kg body wt.) effectively suppressed lung cancer initiated with B[a]P as revealed by the decrease in the extent of lipid peroxidation with concomitant increase in the activities of enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) and non-enzymatic antioxidant (reduced glutathione, vitamin E and vitamin C) levels when compared to lung cancer bearing animals. Our data suggest that piperine may extend its chemopreventive effect by modulating lipid peroxidation and augmenting antioxidant defense system. 相似文献
