ObjectiveTo investigate an infusion of propofol for anesthesia in comparison to tiletamine-zolazepam anesthesia, evaluating physiological variables and recovery in squirrel monkeys.Study designProspective non-blinded randomized study.AnimalsEight healthy squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus), aged 3 years and weighing 0.340–0.695 kg.MethodsPremedication was intramuscular midazolam (0.5 mg) and meperidine (4 mg). Anesthesia was induced with intravenous (IV) propofol (4 mg kg?1 minute?1) and maintained with propofol starting at 0.4 mg kg?1 minute?1 (PRO, n = 4) or IV tiletamine-zolazepam (5 mg kg?1) and maintained with supplementary doses of TZ (TZ, n = 4). Cardiopulmonary variables were measured continuously. Arterial blood gases and lactate concentration were measured at the end of anesthesia. Quality and times of recovery were determined. Repeatedly measured data for significant differences were tested between groups with t-test and within groups by anova.ResultsMedian time for induction of anesthesia in PRO was 180 seconds. Mean maintenance infusion rate of propofol was 0.43 ± 0.05 mg kg?1 minute?1, varying during the 1 hour period. One monkey died after administration of TZ; others required 1, 4, or 8 supplemental doses. Cardiopulmonary variables were similar between groups, but hypotension was recorded. Recovery times to ventral recumbency in PRO (32 ± 17 minutes) and TZ (84 ± 11 minutes) and normal ambulation in PRO (58 ± 22 minutes) and TZ (358 ± 109minutes) were significantly different (p < 0.05). Recovery quality was superior in PRO, with less ataxia and fewer unsuccessful attempts to stand. Lactate concentration was not different between treatments.Conclusions and clinical relevanceCardiopulmonary variables were similar between protocols, aside from the higher incidence of hypotension in PRO, indicating that further studies with a larger number of animals are required. Compared to tiletamine-zolazepam, propofol anesthesia provided faster and superior anesthetic recovery in these animals.  相似文献

In two experiments, ewes in weeks 1–20 of lactation received either pasture only or pasture plus ad libitum conserved forage. Herbage height was maintained at 3·3–3·4 cm on both treatments by manipulation of stocking rate in the 24 plots (twelve per treatment) used for the experiment with additional ewes and lambs. In experiment 1, silage, which was of lower metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 375 g dry matter (DM) ewe−1 d−1. In experiment 2 a strawmix, containing (g kg −1 freshweight) 480 g barley straw, 300 g concentrate and 220 g molasses, again with a lower ME and CP content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 165 g DM ewe −1 d −1. In both experiments ewes not receiving forage lost weight whereas those with forage gained weight and tended to have increased body condition scores. Offering silage or strawmix did not affect lamb liveweight gain or stocking rate.  相似文献

An ultrasonic rangefinder (sonic sward stick) was developed for rapidly measuring and recording the undisturbed surface height of swards. HFRO and ultrasonic sward stick measurements of undisturbed sward height over continuously grazed pasture were closely related. The measurements obtained with both instruments were related to the sward mass; the distribution of that mass between leaf, stem and dead material had little effect.  相似文献

Herbage height was maintained at 3·2 cm on both treatments by manipulation of stocking rate in the twenty-four plots (twelve per treatment) used for the experiment. In experiment 1 silage, which was of lower metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 194 g DM head−1 d−1, providing approximately 40% of total DM intake requirements. In experiment 2 a strawmix, containing (g k g −1 freshweight) 450 g barley straw, 300 g concentrate and 250 g molasses and again with a lower ME and CP content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 57 g DM head−1 d−1, providing approximately 11% of total DM intake requirements. In both experiments stocking rate was increased by 20–25% by providing forage, but lamb growth rate was not affected.  相似文献

Two cases of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) in young Australian horses are described. The pathogenesis of THO is yet to be fully elucidated, but current theories include extension of infection from otitis media or interna to the temporohyoid joint or a primary but non‐infectious degenerative condition within the temporohyoid joint. The young age of the horses and the unilateral distribution suggested an infectious aetiology. Both horses partially responded to treatment with broad‐spectrum antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory drugs with concurrent management of ulcerative keratitis. The management of violent head shaking in one horse included the administration of gabapentin, an anticonvulsant known to have antihyperalgesic effects and reduce neuropathic pain.  相似文献

SUMMARY A brief history of food safety in Australia in the context of the development of scientific knowledge is presented. Australia's food and food commodity residue and contamination surveillance and monitoring programs are outlined. Although chemical residues are perceived as a major health risk by the general community, the risk of food causing illness or death because of chemical residues is low. The major threat to human health from food is microbiological contamination, in terms of deaths, sickness and economic loss. The emerging influences in food safety are scientific and technical developments, deregulation, social and demographic factors, and the media. The risk of disruption of domestic and export markets by food safety issues is considerable. The emergence of international standards for food production and processing will enable commercial contractual arrangements to minimise the frequency of disruptive food safety incidents.  相似文献
