This perspective considers genetic disorders of domestic animal populations, in particular their epidemiology and control. Inherited disorders of animals share the same basic molecular biology as those of human beings, but they differ in their epidemiology due largely to the breed structure of the various species, human control of breeding and a greater influence of the founder effect, particularly due to extensive use of a limited number of sires, and inbreeding. Control of genetic disorders in animals is also more practical through extensive screening for disease, or heterozygous animals within defined breed populations, followed by exclusion of affected or carrier animals from breeding. This is assisted by the fact that, within a breed, many inherited monogenic disorders are associated with a single mutation. However some of the more important disorders may be inherited in a non-Mendelian manner, being influenced by multiple genes as well as environmental factors. These aspects are discussed and contrasted with similar aspects in human medical genetics.  相似文献

A kindred of German shepherd dogs with a moderately severe form of classic hemophilia was studied. The propositus was presented at five months of age because of a persistent hind limb lameness and swelling of the left stifle joint. Unclotted blood was aspirated from the swelling. A brother of this dog's dam had been diagnosed as a hemophiliac.Hemostatic tests were performed on the propositus and on ten available related dogs. On the basis of pedigree analysis, sex and specific factor VIII related activity levels in their plasmas, the dogs were classified as affected, carriers, or unaffected. The propositus and one male relative were identified as classical hemophiliacs and were classified as moderately severely affected on the basis of apparent bleeding tendency and factor VIII procoagulant levels (FVIII:C 8-10% of normal). The propositus' signs were confined to those of lameness and joint soreness and postmortem lesions were confined to a few joints (hemarthrosis). The affected male relative was asymptomatic up to the time of euthanasia (three months of age) and did not have postmortem lesions attributable to hemophilia.Although classic hemophilia (particularly in large breeds of dogs) is often a severe clinical disease, more moderate forms of the disease do occur. Such forms may be more difficult to recognize early in life.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: A comparison of a parent-completed Willett food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a self-completed Youth/Adolescent Questionnaire (YAQ) has not yet been conducted. SETTING: In the Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young (DAISY), parents report their child's diet on the FFQ annually from birth until age 10 years, when the child begins to report their own diet using the YAQ. SUBJECTS: To determine the comparability of these collection methods, 89 children aged 10-17 years and their parents completed the YAQ and FFQ, respectively, for the child's previous year's diet. DESIGN: We compared reported intakes for energy, the macronutrients and a variety of micronutrients of interest to the DAISY study. RESULTS: Bland-Altman plots of energy-adjusted differences between questionnaire responses against their means suggested that the two collection methods gave similar results. The average Spearman correlation coefficient of all energy-adjusted nutrient intakes was 0.50, and did not differ significantly by gender (males, r=0.48; females, r=0.46) or age (10-11 years, r=0.49; 12-17 years, r=0.51). While correlated, the nutrient values from the FFQ were higher than the nutrient values from the YAQ. CONCLUSIONS: While reported nutrient intakes are correlated, an indicator variable defining which survey method a nutrient was collected with should be included in any longitudinal data analyses examining nutrient intakes collected with the YAQ and the FFQ as independent predictors of a disease outcome.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study reports on the energy, macro- and micronutrient intakes of a true longitudinal group of 143 urban black South African children from the Birth-to-Twenty (Bt20) study at two interceptions (2000 and 2003) when they were 10 and 13 years old, respectively. METHODS: Subjects resided in the urban Johannesburg/Soweto area of the Gauteng Province in South Africa. Dietary intake was assessed using a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. The coded data were analysed using SAS. RESULTS: Mean daily intake of energy, all six macronutrients and most micronutrients (17/19) increased from 2000 to 2003. Of the 19 micronutrients investigated, the mean daily intake of eight (calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid and biotin) fell below the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) at both interceptions. More than 70% of the children consumed less than the RDA for these same eight nutrients. From 2000 to 2003, there was a decrease in the percentage of children falling below the RDA for energy (from 73 to 59%), but an increase in the percentage of children falling below the RDA for most of the micronutrients. There was a positive percentage change in mean daily intake for all 26 macro- and micronutrients from 2000 to 2003. CONCLUSION: Mean daily intake of nutrients increased from 2000 to 2003, but intakes for most micronutrients were still below the RDA at both interceptions for a large percentage of the children. The study has provided valuable information on the nutrient intake and change in intake over time among a longitudinal group of South African adolescents.  相似文献

The effect of housing two Hyline strains of commercial laying hens White Hyline (W-98) and Brown Hyline (Hyline Brown) at densities of 2, 3 or 4 per cage (1100, 733 or 550 cm2/hen, respectively) was investigated over 3 months. Hyline Brown layers gained more weight, laid more but lighter eggs, utilized feed more efficiently and had a lower mortality than W-98 layers. Housing birds 2 or 3 per cage resulted in greater body weight gain, higher egg production, heavier eggs, better feed conversion ratio and a lower mortality than housing them 4 per cage. There were significant interactions between strain and stocking density for egg production, egg weight, egg output and mortality. It is suggested that for egg production in semi-arid areas Hyline Brown hens could be used and housed at a density of 733 cm2/hen.  相似文献
