- Rafetus swinhoei, a giant softshell turtle from southern China and northern Vietnam, is the rarest turtle species on Earth, and only two individuals are known worldwide (one in the wild). There is very little ecological information for this species, and the remnant distribution remains completely unknown.
- This article reports for the first time in the international literature the results of a structured questionnaire survey concerning the ecology and distribution of R. swinhoei in Vietnam. The standardized questionnaire consisted of 15 questions and was administered to 10 former Rafetus hunters with several years of experience in catching this species.
- There was considerable consensus among the hunters regarding several aspects of the biology of R. swinhoei, with special reference to its reproductive and feeding habits. The mean weight of 58 captured individuals was 53 kg, with the majority of individuals weighing 15–40 kg (median = 40 kg) and only 17.2% of individuals weighing more than 100 kg.
- Based on the hunters'answers, it was established that the population collapse of R. swinhoei in Vietnam occurred in two phases: first during the 1980s, when the population size dramatically decreased, and second, at the beginning of the 1990s, when many hunters simultaneously collected multiple individuals from populations already experiencing severe impacts. There was also a general agreement that these turtles became very rare after 1991–92.
- In total, 90% of the hunters agreed that there should still be wild R. swinhoei individuals at their respective sites, and some of the hunters also reported a few recent sightings that they attributed to the target species.
- As several sites of likely presence were identified, we suggest that extensive trapping should be planned at these sites in future.

- Reservoirs and associated river fragments are novel ecosystems not experienced by fishes in their evolutionary history, yet they are now commonplace across the globe. Understanding how fishes use these novel habitats is vital to conservation efforts in contemporary riverscapes.
- Movement patterns of the endangered razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) synthesized from tagging efforts in the upper Colorado River basin, USA, illustrate the applications of tagging technology and data sharing by multiple agencies to better understand the spatial ecology of large river fishes.
- Tagging studies between 2014 and 2018 in Lake Powell and its two main tributary rivers, the Colorado (unfragmented) and San Juan (waterfall‐fragmented), were used to quantify movement of razorback sucker within this river–reservoir habitat complex. In addition, facilitated translocations of fish upstream of a waterfall barrier in the San Juan River were assessed in 2016–2017.
- Extensive movement of fish occurred within and across river and reservoir habitats. Of 722 fish captured in the Colorado River arm of Lake Powell, 36% of re‐encounters occurred upstream in the Colorado or Green rivers, or fish dispersed through the reservoir and were detected in the San Juan River arm. Fourteen fish moved more than 600 km. In the San Juan arm of the reservoir, 29% and 20% of fish in 2017 and 2018, respectively, had moved ~30–40 km upstream below the waterfall in the San Juan River within a year. In 2016–2017, 303 fish were translocated upstream of the waterfall into the San Juan River, but 80% were re‐encountered downstream of the waterfall within a year.
- Long‐distance movements by razorback sucker were common within and among rivers and reservoirs illustrating how large river fish, in general, might maintain population connectivity in highly altered ecosystems.

The mechanisms of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) action on goldfish growth hormone (GH) release were investigated by examining GH release responses from dispersed goldfish pituitary cells to a synthetic mammalian (m)PACAP38 peptide. It was established that GH release stimulated by 2-h exposure to mPACAP38 was concentration-dependent, attenuated by the PACAP receptor antagonist mPACAP6–38, and subject to neuroendocrine modulation by somatostatin. Maximal mPACAP38-stimulated GH release was not additive to the responses elicited by either the adenylate cyclase activator forskolin or the cyclic (c)AMP analog 8-bromo-cAMP. The GH responses to mPACAP38, forskolin and 8-bromo-cAMP, either alone or in combination, were abolished by H89, a protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor. SQ22536, an adenylate cyclase inhibitor, attenuated forskolin- and mPACAP38-stimulated GH release. In contrast, mPACAP38-stimulated GH release were additive to the responses to two protein kinase C (PKC) activators and unaffected by two PKC inhibitors. These results suggest that the stimulatory action of PACAP on GH secretion is mediated through a cAMP- / PKA-dependent mechanism, whereas the involvement of PKC appears unlikely. The ability of mPACAP38 to further enhance maximal GnRH (PKC)-dependent GH release, but not dopamine D1 agonist (PKA)-dependent GH secretion, is consistent with this hypothesis. A possible involvement of Ca2+ in PACAP action is also suggested. Two inhibitors of voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channel reduced the GH responses to mPACAP38 in static incubation; conversely, mPACAP38 increased intracellular [Ca2+] in identified, single goldfish somatotropes. 相似文献

Saltmarsh provides essential fish feeding and nursery habitat but has globally declined by 50%. We used a statistical block design to compare fish feeding activity within human-engineered or “re-aligned” saltmarsh to established saltmarsh. Linear and multivariate modelling highlighted that Thinlip Mullet (Chelon ramada) and European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) feeding rates were 16% and 31% lower within re-aligned than established saltmarshes, whereas Gobies (Pomatoschistus spp.) fed at the same rate as in both habitats. Analysis of European bass and Goby gut contents highlighted that important detritivorous prey species were up to 85.6% lower in re-aligned sites. Lower vegetation density may have negatively affected the feeding ecologies of fishes within re-aligned sites. However, due to the ecological value and potential for further improvement or habitat development, continued assessment of the beneficial effects of re-aligned sites for fisheries and net gain perspectives is needed. 相似文献

Thiodan® is an insecticide which can cause morphological changes in fish tissues, dependent on the concentration. To investigate possible morphological changes, this study evaluated the number and diameter of ovarian follicles in lambaris Astyanax bimaculatus exposed to Thiodan® for 96 h in different treatments at three sub‐lethal concentrations: 1.15, 2.3 and 5.6 μg L?1 and a control group without Thiodan®. Females exposed to Thiodan® were divided into four treatments: (i) without acclimation and without food, (ii) without acclimation and with food, (iii) with acclimation for 10 days and without food; (iv) with acclimation for 10 days and with food. In this study, it was noted that the action of Thiodan® at sub‐lethal concentrations in a static system did not affect the morphology of follicular development. However, the treatments with acclimation showed lower numbers of primary and secondary follicles when compared to fish from treatments without acclimation. For the groups exposed to Thiodan®, a greater number of atretic follicles were observed compared to the control groups. The follicular diameter of secondary follicles in fish exposed to Thiodan® in the treatment with acclimation and with food was highest in the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the mean gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indices of treatments with acclimation were lower than those for treatments without acclimation. These data suggest that the fish may be being affected by the pesticide to which the fish were submitted, and may cause impairment to the follicular development. 相似文献

Historically, cisco Coregonus artedi Lesueur was the predominant prey fish and target of commercial fisheries throughout Lake Superior, but most spawning stocks collapsed by the mid-1900s. Stocks partially recovered by the early 1990s, but contemporary abundance is considered to be below historical levels and driven by intermittent recruitment. Stochastic, age-structured simulation models were used to determine whether historical (pre-1955) cisco yield in Lake Superior was consistent with contemporary (1992–2015) abundance, life-history characteristics and recruitment dynamics. When compared to contemporary stocks, the findings suggest historical stocks had: (1) similar recruits per spawner at low spawning stock sizes; (2) lower rates of compensatory density dependence; (3) similar or lower recruitment variation depending on the area and (4) higher median adult and age-1 density. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that eutrophication during the historical period supported greater recruitment and adult abundance and that re-oligotrophication during the contemporary period may be limiting full recovery. 相似文献

- Next to cetaceans and megafishes, freshwater turtles are the most iconic endangered freshwater species.
- A detailed questionnaire survey conducted with more than 100 individuals from fishing communities in northern Vietnam was used to investigate the current status of Southeast Asian turtles and provides new hope concerning the survival of Rafetus swinhoei, for which recent official records in the wild are limited to a single individual in Vietnam.
- The survey included the entire Vietnamese portion of the Da River in Hoa Binh and Son La provinces, as well as the Chu and Ma river system in Thanh Hoa Province, as they are the last sites where the world's rarest and largest Asian softshell turtle has been seen. The questionnaire, conducted in Vietnamese, focused on demographic details, fishing intensity and gear, the status of fishing grounds, and the frequency of interaction with turtles.
- The great majority of fishers could recognize different turtle species from photographs and describe their preferential breeding habitats; not all knew that they are protected. A few confirmed that more than once each year they still encounter freshwater turtles during their fishing activities.
- This survey provides detailed information on sites where freshwater turtles are still seen in northern Vietnam and broadens our hope that wild individuals of the extremely rare R. swinhoei may still be present in the remaining riparian wetlands of these biodiverse, dammed, and controlled river basins in North Vietnam.

The recent identification of scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate in alkaline soil extracts by solution 31P NMR spectroscopy allowed us to investigate this compound in soils by re-analyzing spectra from two previously published studies. Concentrations of scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate in 29 temperate pasture soils from England and Wales ranged between 11 and 130 mg P kg−1 soil and accounted for between 4 and 15% of the soil organic phosphorus. The ratio of scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate to myo-inositol hexakisphosphate ranged between 0.29 and 0.79. In a 10 month pot experiment with six grassland soils from New Zealand, growth of pine seedlings (Pinus radiata D. Don) decreased scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate concentrations by between 10 and 46%. Growth of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) decreased scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate in three low-nutrient soils by 5-21%, but increased it in three other soils by 11-16%. We conclude that scyllo-inositol hexakisphosphate is an important component of soil organic phosphorus with potential ecological significance. 相似文献
