Triazole fungicides and the selection of resistance to medical triazoles in the opportunistic mould Aspergillus fumigatus

Azole resistance is an emerging problem in the opportunistic mould Aspergillus fumigatus. The triazoles are the most important agents for the management of Aspergillus diseases in humans. Selection for acquired resistance may occur in the hospital setting through exposure to high doses of azoles during azole therapy, but evidence is accumulating that A. fumigatus may become resistant to medical triazoles through environmental exposure to fungicides. The recovery of A. fumigatus isolates resistant to the medical triazoles from azole‐naive patients as well as from the environment strongly indicates an environmental route of resistance selection. Molecule alignment studies have identified five fungicides that share a very similar molecule structure with the medical triazoles, and thus may have selected for mechanisms that confer resistance to both groups of compounds. It is important to explore further the presumed fungicide‐driven route of resistance selection in order to implement effective preventive measures as the prevalence of azole resistance in A. fumigatus continues to increase and causes major challenges in the management of azole‐resistant Aspergillus diseases. Spatiotemporal pattern of neural processing in the human auditory cortex

The principles that the auditory cortex uses to decipher a stream of acoustic information have remained elusive. Neural responses in the animal auditory cortex can be broadly classified into transient and sustained activity. We examined the existence of similar principles in the human brain. Sound-evoked, blood oxygen level-dependent signal response was decomposed temporally into independent transient and sustained constituents, which predominated in different portions-core and belt-of the auditory cortex. Converging with unit recordings, our data suggest that this spatiotemporal pattern in the auditory cortex may represent a fundamental principle of analyzing sound information.     

A lupinosis-associated myopathy in sheep and the effectiveness of treatments to prevent it

A lupinosis-associated myopathy occurred in 26 of 48 sheep given a crude toxic extract of Phomopsis leptostromiformis, and in 18 of 34 sheep that grazed a toxic lupin stubble. Treatment with selenium or alpha-tocopherol alone neither prevented nor cured the myopathy, but selenium and alpha-tocopherol together may have been partially effective. Among the group of 48 intoxicated sheep, those with myopathy had a significantly lower mean terminal concentration of alpha-tocopherol in their livers than those with no myopathy. There was no relationship between the severity of liver injury and the occurrence of the myopathy. It was considered that this lupinosis-associated myopathy may have a similar pathogenesis to nutritional myopathy. Data on plasma creatine phosphokinase and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activities, plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations and terminal tissue concentrations of selenium and alpha-tocopherol are presented.     

Efficacy of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Beauveria Bassiana</Emphasis> for the Management of Economically Important Wireworm Species (Coleoptera: Elateridae) in Organic Farming

Wireworms, the larvae of click beetle species Agriotes lineatus, A. obscurus and A. sputator are serious pests for several field crops. They are considered severe pests of potato tubers and the damages caused by them can be resulted a significant loss especially in organic crop production. Since synthetic insecticides are prohibited in Organic Farming; biological control methods have to be used in organic crop production. In the current study naturalis Beauveria bassianaa strain ATCC 74040 was used both under laboratory and field conditions using wheat and potato crops as a food source respectively. Fungus showed a significant mortality in high number of wireworms boxes (50%) compared to low number of wireworms (17%) and untreated boxes (13%) respectively. However, seed germination showed no effect in all three categories. Field data have shown mixed results when B. bassiana has been applied in a variety of application methods. Maximum infestation (3.99%) was recorded in untreated plots; while significantly lower damage (1.11%) was recorded in whole surface treated plots. During first year all the treatments were significantly different from each other; however, no significant differences were noted between furrows and whole surface applications but were different from control treatment during second year of experimentation. The results showed that the biological control of wireworms by using entomopathogenic fungi, such as B. bassiana is a promising target specific option without disturbing the other communities in the soil.
