Serological and bacteriological detection of Brucella canis infection of stray dogs in Moreno, Argentina

A focus of B. canis infection was identified in Moreno, Argentina, among the stray dog population by serologic methods and confirmed in a second survey which included cultural isolations. A counterimmunoelectrophoresis technique using a specific rough Brucella surface antigen was applied to the serodiagnosis of canine brucellosis. This method was found to be as effective as the mercaptoethanol tube agglutination test and the gel diffusion test in detecting B. canis antibodies in natural and experimentally infected animals. The results are discussed in terms of the diagnostic significance of the three tests employed.     

Echocardiographic Findings in 11 Cats with Acromegaly

Background

Information regarding cardiac changes in domestic cats with acromegaly is limited.

Hypothesis/Objectives

The objective of this study was to describe the echocardiographic findings in cats with acromegaly.

Animals

Eighteen cats diagnosed with acromegaly at Colorado State University between 2008 and 2012. Of these 18 cats, 11 had echocardiography performed.

Methods

A retrospective review of medical records was made to identify cats with acromegaly that also had echocardiography performed.

Results

Of the 11 cats identified, 7 had left ventricular concentric hypertrophy, 6 had left atrial enlargement, and 7 had evidence of abnormal diastolic function. All 11 cats had evidence of structural or functional cardiac disease.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Cardiovascular abnormalities frequently are present in cats with acromegaly, and a complete cardiac evaluation should be considered in these patients.     

Toxicity of Panamanian poison frogs (Dendrobates): some biological and chemical aspects

A small Neotropical frog, Dendrobates pumilio, undergoes interpopulational variation in color, degree of toxicity, size, and habits. Differences in body coloration encompass the visible spectrum from red to blue, as well as achromatic black and white. There are wide variations in the degree of toxicity, but these variations are not correlated with supposed warning colors. Extracts of skin yield two toxic compounds characterized as steroidal alkaloids with molecular formulae C(19)H(33)NO(2) and C(l9)H(33)NO(3). The rapid rate of divergent evolution among populations of this frog may result from isolation and chance restriction of original heterozygosity, with subsequent selection acting on different and greatly limited mixtures of alleles.     

2-aminoethylphosphonic Acid metabolism during embryonic development of the planorbid snail helisoma

In freshly laid egg masses of Helisoma sp., more than 95 percent of the phosphorus is found in alkylphosphonic acids, as determined by phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These compounds are metabolized during embryonic development, as shown by differential acid hydrolysis and experiments with phosphorus-33-labeled phosphoric acid. Further, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates phosphonic acid involvement in related snail families, including the schistosomal vector Biomphalaria glabrata.
