Molecular order of participation of inhibitors (or activators) in biological systems

From a Hill plot it is frequently possible to determine whether exactly one, two, or several inhibitor (or activator) molecules are involved in a critical rate-determining biological process.     

Compulsive sexual activity induced by p-chlorophenylalanine in normal and pinealectomized male rats

p-Chlorophenylalanine depletes brain serotonin and induces longlasting sexual excitation in male rats. The effect of p-chlorophenylalanine is potentiated by pargyline. Administration of 5-hydroxytryptophan to rats treated with p-chlorophenylalanine plus pargyline blocks the sexual excitation. p-Chlorophenylalanine also elicits sexual excitation in pinealectomized rats; this effect is not mediated by the lack of indole hormones in the pineal but may be the consequence of depletion of 5-hydroxytryptophan in the brain and the resulting imbalance between 5-hydroxytryptophan and catecholamine activity in the central nervous system.     

Summary of arguments for a hot moon

Analysis of physical and chemical observations shows that the interior of the moon is now and always has been hot. It is close to the melting point at each level beneath a cool outer zone.     

Phobos: preliminary results from mariner 7

Analysis of an image of Phobos on Mariner 7 frame 7F91 indicates that the martian satellite is larger and has a darker surface than had previously been thought. The limb profile measures 18 by 22 kilometers and is elongated along the orbital plane. Phobos has an average visual geometric albedo of 0.065 lower than that known for any other body in the solar system. It seems probable that Phobos did not form by accretion around primordial Mars, but was captured at some later time.     

Harvest-pruning and trellising of ‘Sultana’ vines. I. Effects on yield and vegetative growth

Yield reductions averaging 10% are reported from 2 experiments in which ‘Sultana’ vines were continuously harvest-pruned for 11 and 9 years respectively. Over the period of the study there was no evidence of the yield reduction increasing with time.Differences between treatments in bunch number, berry weight and total soluble solids did not account for the reduction in yield. However, berry number per bunch was consistently, if not always significantly, lower on treated vines. Harvest-pruned vines had lower pruning-weights than the control vines.Increases in trellis width from 0.30 to 0.45 m to 0.90 m generally led to increases in yield caused by increases in bunch number. A 0.30 m wide T-trellis, with foliage wires added to support the shoots vertically to a height of 2 m, also gave yield increases over the standard 0.30 m trellis in most seasons. Harvest-pruned vines on the 0.90 m wide trellis gave similar yields to control vines on the standard 0.30 m trellis.     

Japanese supercomputer technology

Under the auspices of the Ministry for International Trade and Industry the Japanese have launched a National Superspeed Computer Project intended to produce high-performance computers for scientific computation and a Fifth-Generation Computer Project intended to incorporate and exploit concepts of artificial intelligence. If these projects are successful, which appears likely, advanced economic and military research in the United States may become dependent on access to supercomputers of foreign manufacture.     

Increase of atmospheric methane recorded in antarctic ice core

Air entrapped in bubbles of cold ice has essentially the same composition as that of the atmosphere at the time of bubble formation. Measurements of the methane concentration in air extracted by two different methods from ice samples from Siple Station in western Antarcitica allow the reconstruction of the history of the increase of the atmospheric methane during the past 200 years.     

The composition of phobos: evidence for carbonaceous chondrite surface from spectral analysis

A reflectance spectrum of Phobos (from 200 to 1100 nanometers) has been compiled from the Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer, Viking lander imaging, and ground-based photometric data. The reflectance of the martian satellite is approximately constant at 5 percent from 1100 to 400 nanometers but drops sharply below 400 nanometers, reaching a value of 1 percent at 200 nanometers. The spectral albedo of Phobos bears a striking resemblance to that of asteroids (1) Ceres and (2) Pallas. Comparison of the reflectance spectra of asteroids with those of meteorites has shown that the spectral signature of Ceres is indicative of a carbonaceous chondritic composition. A physical explanation of how the compositional information is imposed on the reflectance spectrum is given. On the basis of a good match between the reflectance spectra of Phobos and Ceres and the extensive research that has been done to infer the composition of Ceres, it seems reasonable to believe that the surface composition of Phobos is similar to that of carbonaceous chondrites. This suggestion is consistent with the recently determined low density of Mars's inner satellite. Our result and recent Viking noble gas measurements suggest different modes of origin for Mars and Phobos.
