Sensitivity of boreal forest carbon balance to soil thaw

We used eddy covariance; gas-exchange chambers; radiocarbon analysis; wood, moss, and soil inventories; and laboratory incubations to measure the carbon balance of a 120-year-old black spruce forest in Manitoba, Canada. The site lost 0.3 +/- 0.5 metric ton of carbon per hectare per year (ton C ha-1 year-1) from 1994 to 1997, with a gain of 0.6 +/- 0.2 ton C ha-1 year-1 in moss and wood offset by a loss of 0.8 +/- 0.5 ton C ha-1 year-1 from the soil. The soil remained frozen most of the year, and the decomposition of organic matter in the soil increased 10-fold upon thawing. The stability of the soil carbon pool ( approximately 150 tons C ha-1) appears sensitive to the depth and duration of thaw, and climatic changes that promote thaw are likely to cause a net efflux of carbon dioxide from the site.     

Gas-phase ionic reactions: dynamics and mechanism of nucleophilic displacements

Nucleophilic displacement reactions (the SN2 reaction) of ions in the gas phase are a prototypical reaction system that allows a study of dynamics, mechanisms, and structure-energy relations. This article reviews aspects of the kinetics (especially the applicability of statistical reaction rate theory), the relation of structure and reactivity, and the effects of small numbers of solvent molecules on the reaction and compares the behavior of the ionic reaction in the gas phase with that in solution.     

Anthelmintic resistance in Australian sheep nematode populations

SUMMARY The resistance status of gastro–intestinal nematodes to anthelmintics was evaluated on 881 sheep farms throughout Australia during 1991–92. Resistance was shown to be widespread. Overall, 85% of farms had sheep infected with nematodes resistant to benzimidazole, 65% to levamisole and 34% to combination (benzimidazole + levamisole) products. Resistance to ivermectin was not detcted. On only 9% of farms did all anthelmintic groups reduce egg counts by greater than or equal to 95%. The culture of faeces from untreated sheep showed Telodorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus spp, Chabertia ovina and Haemonchus contortus to be the principal species. The nature and prevalence of resistance was not significantly correlated with stocking rate. However, resistance to combination products was almost twice as prevalent on farms in areas with an average annual rainfall of greater than 500 mm.     

Serum growth hormone and nitrogen metabolism responses in young bull calves infused with growth hormone-releasing factor for 20 days

Intravenous infusion of growth hormone (GH)-releasing factor (GRF) sustains elevated serum GH for at least 5 days in young Holstein steers, but the effects of extended infusion of GRF on serum GH and nitrogen (N) metabolism have not been determined. Thirteen Dutch-Friesian bull calves (148 +/- 1.5 kg) were assigned randomly to receive daily either 0 or 3.6 mg GRF (hGRF1-44NH2; U-68420) in saline as a continuous infusion for 20 days. Calves were fed milk replacer twice daily while housed indoors in wooden-slatted floor box crates (metabolism cages). Nitrogen determinations were made on daily feed, feces, and urine samples which were pooled for days 9 to 14 of treatment. Concentrations of GH were quantified in blood samples collected at 20 min intervals for 8 hr on day 1, 10 and 20. The infusion of GRF increased baseline GH (P less than .07), the number of GH pulses (P less than .0001), the amplitude of the GH pulses (P less than .001), and area under the GH response curve (P less than .0002). Within GRF-infused calves baseline GH (P less than .0001) and area under the GH response curve (P less than .006) were greater on day 20 than on day 1 or 10 (day X treatment interaction, P less than .04). Area under the GH response curve was similar on each sampling day in saline-infused calves, but baseline GH was higher (P less than .03) on day 20 than either day 1 or 10. Infusion of GRF increased episodic GH secretion in spite of limited pulsatile activity in saline-infused calves.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

A technique for sampling total rumen contents in sheep

The paper describes the manufacture of an easily removable large rumen fistula closure for sheep and a restraining cradle which is used when sampling total rumen contents. Eight sheep have been fitted with the fistula and have been used regularly for nine months. The technique is rapid and simple and the closure is more reliable than other types which are often removed accidentally.     

Cotton remains from archeological sites in central coastal peru

Cotton remains from four archeological sites in central coastal Peru, representing a time sequence from about 2500 to 1000 B.C., were compared with similar materials obtained from living wild and cultivated forms of Gossypium barbadense L. The comparison revealed that the archeological cotton samples were primitive forms of Gossypium barbadense, differing little from present-day wild forms of the same species. Although not the earliest cottons recorded for the New World, they appear to represent the earliest stages of cotton domestication yet recorded.
