SUMMARY A study on 3 farms, each having a preventive strategy for the control of nematode infections, determined the risk factors associated with diarrhoea among Merino ewes in winter. Comparisons were made among groups of mated and unmated ewes with and without treatment with controlled-release capsules containing albendazole. Diarrhoea was assessed from the accumulations of faeces around the breech (dag score) and related to worm egg counts, total worm counts and histopathological findings. The overall prevalence of severe dag in ewes not treated with a capsule was 26% (221/844). In comparison, only 2.7% of treated ewes had severe dag. The adjusted odds ratio on each farm indicated that untreated ewes were between 12 and 16 times more likely to be affected with severe dag than ewes treated with a capsule. The effect of lactation was significant on only one farm whereas initial body weight had no significant effect. There was no significant association between worm egg counts and the occurrence of severe dag. There were significantly more eosinophils in the small intestine of ewes affected with severe dag compared with unaffected ewes. There were no significant differences in mast cell and globule leucocyte numbers between affected and unaffected ewes. This study provides strong evidence that the main cause of diarrhoea among Merino ewes grazing winter and early spring pastures is the ingestion of trichostrongylid larvae even by sheep that have a well-developed protective immune response to these parasites. New strategies for the control of nematode infections are needed to prevent diarrhoea and dag formation in adult sheep. 相似文献
The relationship between a landscape process and observed patterns can be rigorously tested only if the expected pattern in the absence of the process is known. We used methods derived from percolation theory to construct neutral landscape models,i.e., models lacking effects due to topography, contagion, disturbance history, and related ecological processes. This paper analyzes the patterns generated by these models, and compares the results with observed landscape patterns. The analysis shows that number, size, and shape of patches changes as a function of p, the fraction of the landscape occupied by the habitat type of interest, and m, the linear dimension of the map. The adaptation of percolation theory to finite scales provides a baseline for statistical comparison with landscape data. When USGS land use data (LUDA) maps are compared to random maps produced by percolation models, significant differences in the number, size distribution, and the area/perimeter (fractal dimension) indices of patches were found. These results make it possible to define the appropriate scales at which disturbance and landscape processes interact to affect landscape patterns. 相似文献
Research performed on microlandscapes embodies the essence of landscape ecology by focusing on the ecological consequences of the mosaic structure of different landscape elements. As an illustration, observations and simulations were used to test whether the fractal structure of grassland microlandscapes affected the movement patterns of tenebrionid beeetles in natural environments. The significant tendency of beetles to avoid 1 m2 cells with fractal dimensions of 1.85 to 1.89 (indicating the area-filling tendency of bare ground) demonstrated the role of landscape structure as a modifier of beetle movements or diffusion in heterogeneous landscapes. Experiments in microlandscapes may accelerate the development of quantitative conceptual frameworks applicable to landscapes at all scales. 相似文献
In the horse, surgical approaches for plating fractures of the ulna, radius, metacarpus, tibia, and metatarsus involved a single curvilinear skin incision and incision of the superficial fascia in a manner to prevent postoperative dehiscence. Three Standardbred horses were given 0.2 mg (1 mCi) of 75selenomethionine intravenously and a second group of three were given 10 mCi of tritiated diisopropylfluorophosphate (0.5 mg) intravenously. Observations on labeled cells were continued for 250 days after radioselenium injection and 160 days after tritium injection.
The lifespan of erythrocytes using 75selenmethionine was 155 ± 10 days and 148 ± 7.8 days using tritiated diisopropylfluorophosphate. There was no significant difference at the 10% level between the lifespans, using these labels. The uptake of radioselenium into erythrocytes reached a mean maximum of 11.5% at 82 ± 18.9 days after injection of the label. There was an elution of from 17.6% of the injected dose of tritium label down to 7.5% eight days after injection of this isotope. From this study both of these labels appear to be satisfactory for determining the erythrocyte lifespan of the horse.
The mean time of the curve of mean radioselenium activity of peripheral blood leukocytes for the three horses was 5.54 days and the lifespan of these cells was seven days. The mean lifespan of peripheral blood leukocytes of the three horses after in vivo labelling with tritiated diisopropylfluorophosphate was 17.3 hours. No specific labelling was found in bone marrow or peripheral blood cells at this level of tritium labelling by dipping emulsion autoradiography.
The mean lifespan of equine platelets for three horses using radioselenomethionine was 9.2 days and the mean lifespan of equine platelets using tritiated diisopropylfluorophosphate was 6.6 days in a group of three horses.
In a field survey of viraemias due to vaccination of chickens with herpes virus of turkey, variation was encountered in titres and percentages of birds viraemic. The incidence of viraemias was much lower in sick than in healthy birds in flocks undergoing mortality from Marek's disease. In a concurrent experiment the same strain of chicken and the same commercial vaccine were used as in the field flocks affected with Marek's disease. A high incidence of viraemia and 84.6 per cent protection against Marek's disease were obtained with single vaccination at one day of age. Revaccination at 21 days of age produced no measurable benefits in the same experiment. 相似文献
