Summary In a previous experiment, evaporation from soybeans (Glycine max L.) in two weighing lysimeters with different soil types was found to differ by up to 30%. This occurred despite good canopy development and maintenance of well watered conditions. The present experiment sought to repeat the previous observation and to define its cause. Soybeans were sown in and around the two weighing lysimeters on 9 December 1987 and were well watered through the entire season. The lysimeters, L1 and L2 contained undisturbed blocks of Hanwood loam and Mundiwa clay loam soils, respectively, both Rhodoxeralfs. Crop growth, radiant energy interception, soil heat flux, canopy temperature and root growth were monitored through the season. Plant growth in L2 was slower than in L1 such that by 46 days from sowing (DFS), L1 plants had one leaf more on average than those in L2 and by 76 DFS plants in L2 were about 0.1 m shorter than those in either L1 or in the area immediately surrounding it. The ratio of L2 to L1 daily evaporation was 0.76 during the period 75 to 84 DFS; this being very similar to the effect observed previoulsy. The crop canopy in a 100 m2 area centred around L2 was reduced in height by removing the top 0.15 m at 85 DFS. This treatment caused the L2L1 evaporation ratio to increase to 1.07. The effect of reducing the height of plants surrounding L2 was to increase net radiant energy intercepted in the canopy of the L2 plants and to change the turbulent transfer processes over the L2 canopy. Shading from the taller surrounding plants was estimated to have reduced evaporation by 4% while increased aerodynamic resistance above the L2 canopy as the result of the height discontinuity accounted for a further 20% reduction. This study highlights limitations in the application of one dimensional energy balance theory to non-ideal canopy configurations and to the care needed to ensure plant growth within lysimeters is the same as the surrounds.Visiting scientist  相似文献

Shallow ground water is a resource that is routinely overlooked when water management alternatives are being considered in irrigated agriculture. Even though it has the potential to provide significant quantities of water for crop use under the proper conditions and management. Crop water use from shallow groundwater is affected by soil water flux, crop rooting characteristics, crop salt tolerance, presence of a drainage system, and irrigation system type and management. This paper reviews these factors in detail and presents data quantifying crop use from shallow ground, and describes the existing state of the art with regard to crop management in the presence of shallow ground water. The existing data are used to determine whether in-situ crop water use from shallow ground water is suitable for a given situation. The suggested methodology uses ratios of ground water electrical conductivity to the Maas–Hoffman yield loss threshold values, the day to plant maturity relative to plant growth period, and the maximum rooting depth relative to the nearly saturated zone. The review demonstrates that for in-situ use to be feasible there has to be good quality ground water relative to crop salt tolerance available for an extended period of time. Shallow ground water availability is one area that can be managed to some extent. Crop selection will be the primary determinant in the other ratios.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to check the relevance of using in‐vivo micro computed tomography (µCT) for the diagnosis of possible diseases of the middle and inner ear of the cat. Therefore, on the one hand, differences of the detail detectability between the two imaging methods conventional computed tomography (cCT) and in‐vivo µCT were analyzed. Six healthy cat ears were dissected and scanned several times and the obtained images were compared with each other. On the other hand, histological slices of all ears were prepared and pictures of defined anatomical structures were taken and compared with the identical sectional plane of the µCT‐images. This way it was possible to evaluate the quality and clinical limitations of the in‐vivo µCT. The results show that an in‐vivo µCT is suitable to analyze even the smallest osseous structures, such as the semicircular ducts, the spiral osseous lamina or the ossicles whereas with the help of cCT it is not possible to identify such small osseous structures because of their blurred and less detailed representation. Delicate soft tissue structures as the membranous labyrinth including hearing and vestibular organ cannot be differentiated with as well in‐vivo µCT‐ as with cCT‐images. In‐vivo µCT represent a good possibility for more detailed diagnosis of extremely fine structures which cannot be detected with cCT. Histological slices can nonetheless not be replaced by in‐vivo µCT due to a too low spatial resolution and the limitations of the in‐vivo µCT with regard to the evaluation of soft tissue dense structures.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate individual metabolic and endocrine adaptation to lactation under conditions of identical housing and feeding conditions in high-yielding dairy cows. Forty-five cows were studied on a research farm under standardized but practical conditions. From wk 2 before calving until wk 14 postpartum, blood samples were collected at weekly intervals and assayed for blood chemistry and various metabolites and hormones. Body weight, BCS, and backfat thickness were also recorded weekly. Milk yield, milk composition, and feed intake and energy balance were accordingly measured during the postpartum phase. The animals were retrospectively classified according to their plasma concentration of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB): cows in which a BHB threshold of 1 mM was exceeded at least once during the experiment were classified as BHB positive (BHB+); cows with BHB values consistently below this threshold were classified as BHB negative (BHB -). Using this classification, differences for NEFA and glucose concentrations were observed, but the mean calculated energy balance did not differ between the groups during the experimental period (-22.2 MJ of NE(1)/d +/- 4.7 for BHB+ and -18.9 MJ of NE(1)/d +/- 4.9 for BHB-). In BHB+ cows, the peripartum decrease (P < 0.05) of BW, BCS, and backfat thickness was more pronounced than in BHB- cows. Mean milk yields did not differ between groups. However, BHB+ cows had greater milk fat and lesser milk protein contents (P < 0.05), resulting in a greater (P < 0.05) fat:protein ratio than in BHB- cows. Thus, to some extent, cows were able to compensate for the negative energy balance by adjustments in performance. Milk acetone concentrations followed BHB concentrations in blood. Insulin-like growth factor-I and leptin concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) in BHB- cows during the time of observation than in the BHB+ cows. Comparing the reproductive variables recorded (first increase of progesterone, first service conception rate, number of services per conception, interval from calving to first AI, interval from first AI to conception, and days open) between the 2 groups yielded no significant differences. Our findings imply that despite comparable energy balance, there is considerable individual variation of the adaptive ability of cows during early lactation based on a variety of metabolic and endocrine variables.  相似文献

Multivariate estimation of genetic parameters involving more than a handful of traits can be afflicted by problems arising through substantial sampling variation. We present a review of underlying causes and proposals to improve estimates, focusing on linear mixed model‐based estimation via restricted maximum likelihood (REML). Both full multivariate analyses and pooling of results from overlapping subsets of traits are considered. It is suggested to impose a penalty on the likelihood designed to reduce sampling variances at the expense of a little additional bias. Simulation results are discussed which demonstrate that this can yield REML estimates that are on average closer to the population values than their unpenalized counterparts. Suitable penalties can be obtained based on assumed prior distributions of selected parameters. Necessary choices of penalty functions and of the stringency of penalization are examined. We argue that scale‐free penalty functions lend themselves to a simple scheme imposing a mild, default penalty which can yield “better” estimates without being likely to incur detrimental effects.  相似文献

Because of few available data on semen parameters in small breed dogs, the study aimed to analyse semen and measure testes of dogs ≤10.0 kg bodyweight. Semen was collected from 41 fertile stud dogs, which were divided based on bodyweight: group 1 ≤ 5.0 kg and group 2 between 5.1 and 10.0 kg. Median values for ejaculate volume (group 1: 1.2 ml; group 2: 2.2 ml), total sperm output (group 1: 110.7 × 106; group 2: 215.1 × 106) and testicular volume (group 1: left testicle 2.8 ml, right testicle 2.7 ml; group 2: left testicle 5.5 ml, right testicle 5.0 ml) were lower in group 1 compared to dogs of group 2 (p = .001; p = .001; both testes: p < .001). There was no difference in sperm concentration (p = .985). Based on these results, introduction of an additional weight group to the commonly used reference values is recommended, since values for ejaculate volume, total sperm output and testicular dimensions for dogs ≤5.0 kg bodyweight differed significantly from values of dogs with a bodyweight from 5.1 to 10.0 kg.  相似文献

General plant response to depleted uranium (DU) was tested using three widespread range‐grass species, Aristida purpurea Nutt. (purple threeawn), Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. (buffalograss), and Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash (little bluestem). Aboveground, belowground, and total biomass measures of these grasses were analyzed over the five different DU soil concentrations of 0, 50, 500, 5,000, and 25,000 mg kg‐1. Differential plant response to DU was observed between the three grasses, wiith A. purpurea and B. dactyloides exhibiting a threshold‐type response in which no changes in biomass occurred until the highest treatment level of 25,000 mg kg‐1 was reached. Schizachyrium scoparium, however, demonstrated a large degree of growth stimulation, or hormesis, at the 50 and 500 mg kg‐1 DU concentrations. Several possible mechanisms of this hormetic response are offered.  相似文献

Treatment of cartilage defects poses challenging problems in human and veterinary medicine, especially in horses. This study examines the suitability of applying scaffold materials similar to those used for human cartilage regeneration on equine chondrocytes. Chondrocytes gained from biopsies of the talocrural joint of three horses were propagated in 2D culture and grown on two different scaffold materials, hyaluronan (HYAFF®) and collagen (BioGide®), and evaluated by light and electron microscopy. The equine chondrocytes developed well in both types of materials. They were vital and physiologically highly active. On the surface of the scaffolds, they formed cell multilayers. Inside the hyaluronan web, the chondrocytes were regularly distributed and spanned the large scaffold fibre distances by producing their own matrix sheath. Half‐circle‐like depressions occasionally found in the cell membrane were probably related to movement on the flexible matrix sheath. Inside the dense collagen scaffold, only single cells were found. They passed through the scaffold strands by cell shape adaptation. This study showed that the examined scaffold materials can be used for equine chondrocyte cultivation. Chondrocytes tend to form multilayers on the surface of both, very dense and very porous scaffolds, and have strategies to span between and move in large gaps.  相似文献
