Forty-three DDT-type compounds were applied in saline suspension to the crural nerve of Periplaneta americana L. and the threshold concentration (ED50) to produce trains of impulses was determined together with the frequency of appearance of repetitive afterdischarge. These quantitative neurological measures were evaluated in multiple regression analyses of structural parameters including van der Waal's volume, the F and R components of Hammet's σ, and the hydrophobic constant Π. This structure-activity analysis provides an accurate estimation of the intrinsic toxicity of the DDT analogs. The results affirm previous working theories that the bulk of the functional groups within the DDT framework is the primary factor relating to activity. However, conformation is also an important parameter. 相似文献
AIM: To determine the frequency and type of skin wounds encountered by New Zealand veterinarians in their equine patients, the duration and estimated costs of treatment as well as the expected outcomes for these wounds.
METHODS: An online survey was sent to all veterinarians registered with the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association. The survey comprised questions on the location and experience of respondents, the number of wound-related cases in relation to the total equine caseload, the type and anatomical location of wounds treated, the frequency, duration and costs of treatments, the outcome of wound treatment and an estimate of the most common causes of death or euthanasia in their equine patients.
RESULTS: The survey response rate was 110/262 (41.9%). The median number of equine cases seen by respondents was 20 (interquartile range (IQR) 6–60) per month; of these, five (IQR 2–10) were wound related. Wounds ranked third after lameness and respiratory disease for the relative frequency with which respondents encountered them. Of 102 respondents 59 (58%) reported that their clients frequently treated wounds incurred by their horse without consulting a veterinarian. Wounds on the distal limb, whether involving only the skin or also deeper structures, were reported by 86/101 (85%) respondents as the most frequently encountered. Wounds in this location also incurred the longest treatment period and were the most prone to develop complications. Finally, wounds ranked second, after colic, as the most common cause of death/euthanasia in the veterinary respondents’ equine patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained via the survey indicate that skin wounds, particularly on the distal limb, are a common occurrence in horses in New Zealand and, when they involve structures underlying the skin, are costly and time-consuming to manage and may lead to decreased performance, retirement or euthanasia. Consequently, we recommend that more effort be devoted to the education of equine veterinarians and owners, and that appropriate research funds be allocated to help improve patient outcomes. 相似文献
Toxigenic strains of Pasteurella multocida were readily differentiated from non-toxigenic strains by an agarose overlay method using bovine turbinate cells or bovine lung cells. Cells which were young and densely confluent were best suited to this assay. The incubation period required to distinguish toxigenic strains was dependent on the confluence of the monolayers, which was affected by the seeding rate, cell passage level and growth time prior to overlay. The agarose overlay method correctly identified 11 of 11 reference strains of Pasteurella multocida, and visible cytotoxic changes were present in the monolayers after 48 to 65 h. Outbreaks of the enzootic form of atrophic rhinitis in 2 New South Wales piggeries were associated with the isolation of toxigenic type D strains of P. multocida. 相似文献
The effects of piperonyl butoxide on metabolism of 14C-labeled methoxychlor, aldrin, and trifluralin were investigated in green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus. Piperonyl butoxide inhibited epoxidation of aldrin to dieldrin, O-dealkylation of methoxychlor, and N-dealkylation of trifluralin, resulting in higher levels of total radioactivity in animals exposed to the combination compared to those exposed to pesticide alone. Where piperonyl butoxide was present a greater proportion of the total radioactivity in the fish extract occurred as parent compound compared to metabolites than in fish exposed to pesticide alone. After 16 days of exposure piperonyl butoxide increased the proportion of parent compound eight times for methoxychlor, 17 times for aldrin, and 15 times for trifluralin. 相似文献
The purpose of the project was to provide a reference for radiographic anatomy of the developing equine foredigit and metacarpophalangeal region. Using xeroradiographic techniques, both foredigits and meta-carpophalangeal regions of six Quarter Horse foals were radiographed at one day of age and at two-week intervals until the foals were six weeks old. The foals were then radiographed at four-week intervals until they were 12 months old. This report deals specifically with the first six months of postnatal development. Lateromedial and dorsopalmar xeroradiographs of each foredigit and metacarpophalangeal region and a dorsal 65° proximal-palmarodistal oblique view of the distal part of the digit were made for each examination. The foals were weighed and measured at the withers immediately prior to each examination. Representative xeroradiographs were selected and appropriately labeled to demonstrate normal radio-graphic anatomy of these regions. First radiographic appearance of distal epiphyseal ossification in metacarpal 2 and metacarpal 4 was extremely variable and ranged from four to 38 weeks. Radiographic closure of the proximal physis of the middle phalanx ranged from 18 to 30 weeks (mean = 26 weeks). Radiographic closure of the proximal physis of the proximal phalanx ranged from 22 to 38 weeks (mean = 30 weeks). Radiographic closure of the distal physis of metacarpal 3 ranged from 18 to 38 weeks (mean = 29 weeks). When xeroradiographic physeal closure times were compared with scintigraphic closure times from a companion study, results correlated very well. A crena marginis solearis was observed in ten of 12 forelimbs (83.3%); its first radiographic appearance ranged from four to 22 weeks (mean = 11–12 weeks). A consistent groove in the hoof wall, which formed near the time of birth and moved distally at about 3 mm per week, was noted. The groove's distance from the proximal hoof border may be useful in age estimation of foals less than 18–20 weeks old. 相似文献
Analogs of methyl parathion with various substituents in the aryl ring were examined for quantitative toxicity to the female white mouse and the female house fly. Substitution in the 3-position with the halogens produced Selectivity Ratios for mouse LD50/fly LD50 in the order Cl > Br > IF. The compounds with the highest Selectivity Ratios were 2Cl > 3CF3 > 3CH3. The biochemical basis for the selectivity of these compounds was explored by evaluation of the kinetics for the inhibition of purified bovine and house fly acetyl cholinesterase by the PO analogs. Differences in the configuration and reactivity of the active sites of the acetyl cholinesterase of the two species explain in part the selectivity of the toxicants. However, selective metabolism also plays a substantial role. 相似文献
