Global papaya production is severely affected by papaya ringspot disease caused by Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV). Management of this potyvirus is challenging, due to 1) its non-persistent transmission by numerous aphid species and 2) the diversity of PRSV strains that exists within a country or between different geographical regions. Papaya cultivars with transgenic resistance have reduced the impact of the disease. There are no effective alternatives to transgenic resistance available in areas where disease pressure is high. In Hawaii, transgenic papayas such as “SunUp” and “Rainbow” have remained resistant to PRSV more than two decades saving the commercial papaya industry. Following the success in Hawaii, researchers from other countries have focused on developing PRSV-resistant transgenic papaya. These transgenic cultivars often demonstrated an initial transitory resistance that was ultimately overcome by the virus. For other cases, resistance was inconsistent. That is, some transgenic lines were resistant while others were not. Transgenic cultivars are now losing PRSV-resistance for various reasons in China and Taiwan. In this review, we present an update on work with transgenic papaya with resistance to PRSV. The focus is on factors affecting transgenic resistance in papaya and our attempt to explain why the Hawaiian scenario of complete and durable resistance has not been replicated in other regions. The utilization of more recent technologies to the development of virus resistance in papaya is also discussed.  相似文献

The effects of translucent polyethylene sheeting as a thermal covering to eradicate Pueraria montana (kudzu) were investigated at Clemson, South Carolina on a clay loam. In 2005, the highest reduction of live root crowns was observed where P. montana was covered for the entire growing season (May–October) with a reduction of 42% of live root crowns compared with the control plots. Where P. montana was covered for alternate weeks throughout the growing season live root crowns were reduced by 35%. Covering P. montana for one week and then uncovering for four weeks repeatedly through the season killed 24% of root crowns. In 2006, the second year of treatment to the same plots, the three solarization treatments had similar efficacy of about 97%. The use of polyethylene sheeting appears not to be cost‐effective for general control of large P. montana infestations, but may be useful for small patches.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the developmental morphology of yak oocytes from the primordial follicle to the tertiary follicle. Yak oocytes from resting primordial (n = 6), activated primordial (n = 12), primary (n = 9), secondary (n = 7) and early tertiary (n = 5) follicles were processed and analysed by light and transmission electron microscopy. The resting primordial follicular oocyte was characterized by relatively smooth surface on the oolemma, the accumulation of free and organelle‐related smooth (SER) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), round or oval mitochondria, and polyribosomes on the surface of the RER and throughout the ooplasm. The activated primordial follicular oocyte was dominated by numerous coated pits and coated vesicles on the oolemma, and round mitochondria. Up to the secondary follicular stage the oocyte displayed an increase in the number of microvilli, polyribosome, Golgi complexes and mitochondria with distinct cristae. During the secondary follicular stage, formation of the zona pellucida, development of a desmosome‐like connection between the oocyte and the granulosa cells, formation of the cortical granules in the oocyte and elongated mitochondria in nearly all oocytes were seen. In the early tertiary follicular oocyte, the perivitelline space was present and a decrease in free SER and RER in the ooplasm occurred; finally, the nucleus migrated from an eccentric to a peripheral location. In conclusion, the growth of the yak oocyte is associated with the relocation and modulation of a number of cytoplasmic organelles as well as the development of oocyte‐specific structures such as the zona pellucida, desmosome‐like connection and cortical granules.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of chlamydial infections on lung function in conventionally raised pigs. Eight pigs aged 39-44 days were included in an aerogeneous challenge model (4 were exposed to Chlamydia suis; 4 served as controls). Nineteen pigs aged 5-27 weeks without clinical symptoms (but partly PCR-positive for chlamydial species) were examined over 6 months. For lung function testing, impulse oscillometry was used. In total, all 27 pigs underwent 465 lung function tests. Variables of ventilation (respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume), respiratory impedance (expressed as resistance and reactance within the frequency range 3-15 Hz), and model derived resistance of proximal and distal airways were measured. Experimental exposure to C. suis significantly affected lung function. Early distal airway obstruction (3-5 days after infection) was followed by an obstruction of proximal airways (7 days after infection). The breathing pattern was significantly changed (decreased tidal volume; increased respiratory rate). In symptom-free pigs having a naturally acquired presence of different chlamydial species in the respiratory system, no deterioration in lung function could be determined up to the age of 6 months. In conclusion, the consequences of respiratory chlamydial infections appear to vary from clinical inapparence to severe respiratory distress.  相似文献

The use of conventional battery cages for hens will be prohibited in Germany in 2007. Only few studies, however, have considered the differences between battery cages and alternative systems with regard to infectious diseases. The existing gaps in the current knowledge need to be closed by research and measures must be developed that will prevent the spread of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections in alternative poultry housing systems.With regard to virus infections, avian influenza requires particular attention. Since wild birds, particularly anseriformes, represent a reservoir for avian influenza viruses, free-ranging poultry is much more at risk of infection than birds in closed hen-houses. Appropriate measures must prevent direct contact with wild birds and transmission via contaminated water, feed, or equipment. Several bacterial infections of poultry represent zoonoses. Salmonella and Campylobacter are considered as particularly important. To avoid a potential increase in the risk of infection for consumers due to poultry keeping systems that might favour infections with bacterial zoonotic agents, there is a special need for research in this area. With regard to parasitic infections, coccidioses may cause problems in alternative poultry housing systems, and lead to considerable economic consequences. The epidemiological situation concerning infections with Histomonas meleagridis needs to be analysed. Since all compounds that had been used for prophylactic or therapeutic purposes in the past have been banned, there is a need to develop new drugs which are safe for animals and humans.  相似文献

SUMMARY Viraemic blood from an ox naturally infected with Australian bluetongue (BLU) virus serotype 16 was passaged twice in sheep. Twelve 2- to 4-years-old Merino ewes, negative in a bluetongue agar gel Immunodiffusion test, were Inoculated with viraemic blood from the second sheep passage. They were examined for 18 days and compared with a control group. Significant changes in haematological measurements, namely packed cell volume, total white cell count and lymphocyte count, and in plasma enzyme concentrations, namely aspartate transaminase and creatine kinase, occurred in the infected sheep. All Infected sheep became sick. The antibody response, and clinical and necropsy findings were consistent with other reports of mild to moderate disease with Australian BLU serotypes.  相似文献

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to determine the cause and risk factors Involved in preweaning piglet diarrhoea. Faecal samples from 2380 diarrhoeic piglets, 5 to 30 days of age, were examined for enteropathogens. Isospora suls oocysts were detected in 53.8% of samples, Escherichia coll in 18.2% and rotavirus in 16.9%. I suis had the widest distribution, being present on 70.9% of 151 piggeries. The onset of diarrhoea occurred mainly between 7 and 14 days (77.5%), peaking at 10 days. Records of 4086 litters from two intensive piggeries were analysed and showed no seasonal variation or effect of sow parity on the incidence of piglet diarrhoea. I suis was the most common enteropathogen associated with diarrhoea in piglets from 5 days of age until weaning.  相似文献
