This study evaluated the importance of three factors (genotype, ultraviolet [UV] radiation and harvest time) and their interaction on phenolics, tannins, flavonoids and antioxidant activity of ‘Paris Island’ (romaine type) and ‘Sanguine’ (red leaf type) lettuce plants as well as on the severity of browning of their fresh-cut product. Ten genotypes had significant effect on secondary metabolite accumulation and higher levels were found in ‘Sanguine’, while no interaction effect was found among all the studied factors. Therefore, a new analysis of variance was performed for each genotype separately. The results showed that in ‘Paris Island’ the time of harvest had a significant effect on all measured parameters with higher levels for plants from the night harvest, while UV radiation had little effect on the plants’ biochemistry. On the contrary, in ‘Sanguine’, UV radiation significantly affected the concentration of secondary metabolites and antioxidant capacity, with higher levels for plants grown under UV-open film. Browning evaluation of fresh-cut product derived from the above plants showed that factors affecting secondary metabolite concentration in whole plants at harvest did not have a similar effect. The findings indicate that there are appropriate treatments, for each genotype, that could achieve high production of secondary metabolites and improve their antioxidant properties. 相似文献

The main objective of this study was to investigate whether cholelithiasis in sheep is related to parasitism or other commonly observed disorders such as liver abscesses. Additionally, the features of the observed biliary calculi are described. The livers of 254 randomly selected clinically healthy adult dairy sheep were used. All visible concretions in the bile were considered as stones. Based on the macroscopical examination, 60 livers were normal, 40 were parasitized with Fasciola hepatica, 42 were parasitized with Dicrocoelium dendriticum, 28 were parasitized with both D. dendriticum and F. hepatica, 40 livers had abscesses and 44 had hydatid cysts. Biliary calculi were detected in 40 livers. Twenty livers had pigment stones and 20 livers had cholesterol stones. The percentage of cholelithiasis was significantly higher in livers parasitized with flukes compared with the others (P<0.05) and the parasitoses with F. hepatica and D. dendriticum were proven to be significant risk factors (P<0.05) for the presence of cholelithiasis in sheep. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the spread of infection and population dynamics of ovine coccidosis under dairy sheep production systems in the Mediterranean area, taking into account differences between management systems, lambing season and climatic conditions. Data were collected from six (intensive and semi-intensive) dairy sheep flocks located either in the North or the South of Greece, with groups of lambs born during two consecutive lambing periods (autumn, spring) from each flock. Faecal consistency and oocyst excretion were recorded from faecal samples taken from 220 lambs in total, starting at days 7-9 after lambing and subsequently every 6 days for 5 times. Eleven Eimeria species including the highly abundant pathogenic E. ovinoidalis and E. crandallis were isolated. The onset of excretion was noted from 13 to 33 days after birth with a peak at 19-21 days. The cumulative incidence of infection per flock until the end of the study ranged from 64.29% to 100% during both lambing periods. A significant tendency for animals to get infected earlier during spring lambing was observed. This trend was even higher for lambs from farms located in the South and is possibly related to the higher contamination level of the farms after lambing during that time. Predominantly subclinical cases of coccidiosis were observed during the course of the study with a relatively low proportion of diarrhoeic faeces which did not significantly differ between the two rounds. Considering the significance of dairy sheep production in the area and the economic losses that can be caused by eimeriosis, monitoring of infection levels in the farms, taking into account the lambing period and environmental conditions, is highly recommended. 相似文献

The incidence of tipburn was studied by growing late winter and spring lettuce cultivars in two consecutive experiments, in hydroponics, either with Deep Flow Technique (DFT) or on solid growth substrates, in Messinia, NW, Greece. Both experiments showed that the fresh marketable yield of lettuce in DFT was approximately twice as great compared to that of plants grown on solid substrates. Tipburn injury was not observed in the late winter experiment whereas it was severe in the spring one. In particular, lettuce grown with DFT in the spring presented significantly greater level of injury whereas when grown on perlite the least. Their shoot calcium concentration was significantly lowest whereas when grown on perlite the highest. Between the two spring cultivars included, ‘Merlin’, which presented the greatest injury, also had significantly higher shoot fresh weight, lower root/shoot ratio, higher tissue water content, and lower nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations compared to ‘Gramsi’. 相似文献

Post-harvest performance of cut viburnum inflorescences was examined in the present study. Harvesting viburnum at three developmental stages resulted in significant differences on flower opening rate (FOR) and flower abscission rate (FAR), but not on vase life. Harvesting at Stage III (>50% open flowers) resulted in highest flower opening percentage, whereas harvesting at Stage I (10–30% open flowers) in significantly lower flower abscission percentage. Pulsing with 20 or 40 mg/l AgNO3 for 24 h extended vase life by 1.6 and 1.9 days, respectively, compared to the controls. Furthermore, flower abscission was significantly reduced after 20 or 40 mg/l AgNO3 treatments by 51 and 62%, respectively, compared to the controls. In contrast, vase solutions containing 100 mg/l DICA or 100 and 200 mg/l methanol did not extend vase life of cut viburnum inflorescences, but significantly reduced flower abscission. Vase solutions containing 1 or 2% (w/v) sucrose negatively affected vase life, flower opening and flower abscission of viburnum inflorescence. Post-harvest treatments with 1-MCP at 10 μl/l in an ethylene-free environment resulted in extension of vase life and in significant reduction of FAR and respiration rates compared to the controls. Vase life of 1-MCP treated inflorescences was increased by 4.2 days compared to the controls. This study investigated the effect of synthetic capsiate, a simplified analogue of capsiate, and vanillyl alcohol on the oxidative stress induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBH) in a line of fibroblasts derived from monkey kidney (Vero cells). In response to the TBH-mediated oxidative stress, a reduction of the levels of total unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol was observed, and a rise in the concentrations of conjugated dienes fatty acids hydroperoxides and 7-ketocholesterol. Pretreatment with both synthetic capsiate and vanillyl alcohol preserved Vero cells from oxidative damage and showed a remarkable protective effect on the reduction of the levels of total unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol, inhibiting the increase of MDA, conjugated dienes fatty acids hydroperoxides, and 7-ketocholesterol. Both compounds were effective against peroxidation of cell membrane lipids induced by TBH, with synthetic capsiate essentially acting as a pro-drug of vanillyl alcohol, its hydrophilic hydrolytic derivative. 相似文献

The scavenging behavior of a series of catechol and guaiacol acid derivatives toward DPPH(*) was examined having as a starting point the order of activity derived on the basis of theoretically calculated BDE values. The studied compounds were protocatechuic, homoprotocatechuic, dihydrocaffeic, and caffeic acids and also vanillic, homovanillic, dihydroferulic, and ferulic acids. Catechol and guaiacol were used as reference compounds. Observations from the parallel study were made with regard to structural features (number and position of hydroxyl groups and the side-carbon chain characteristics) that regulated the behavior of the compounds experimentally. The exceptional DPPH(*) scavenging behavior observed for homoprotocatechuic acid in ethanol and for caffeic acid in acetonitrile could not be supported by the respective BDE values. Ferulic was the most active among guaiacolic acids, whereas dihydroferulic exhibited the highest stoichiometry. Ionizable carboxylic groups seem to affect considerably the relative order of activity as was also evidenced using the ORAC assay. Questions raised about the validity of widely accepted views on criteria for SARs are discussed with regard to literature findings. 相似文献

Perennial forage legumes may be pivotal for improving the sustainability of Mediterranean rainfed farming systems. This study summarizes the outcomes of a study aimed at characterizing morphological and agronomic traits of new germplasm of Bituminaria bituminosa and B. morisiana in Mediterranean environments. Five B. morisiana and three B. bituminosa native populations were evaluated in a small‐plot field experiment in Sardinia (Italy) and compared with seven Spanish accessions of B. bituminosa. The two Bituminaria species differed greatly in morphological traits and the beginning of the flowering stage, and remarkable variations between species were found for forage production and its seasonal distribution, seed yield and persistence. Average cumulative dry‐matter yield was higher in B. bituminosa than in B. morisiana (+7.6%; 297 vs. 276 g per plant). Average 3‐year seed production varied greatly between accessions (from 0.3 to 141 g per plant). Differences for these traits were also found between Sardinian and Spanish germplasm of B. bituminosa. Four clusters were generated by K‐means clustering. Accessions included in cluster III exhibited a positive combination of favourable forage production, high seed yield and satisfactory persistence. Nonetheless, the cluster analysis did not highlight a sharp discrimination between Bituminaria species. The overall results revealed the potential role of Sardinian accessions of B. bituminosa and B. morisiana in extending the forage season and for increased resilience of grasslands in Sardinia and other Mediterranean regions under rainfed conditions. 相似文献

Field trials were carried out to evaluate whether folpet sprayed on grapevines penetrated the epicuticular wax and cell walls of grapes. Folpet showed poor penetration into the epicuticular wax; it was found almost totally on the surface. Despite its low solubility in water, perhaps due to the presence of adjuvants, its residues showed such a high resistance to washing that the action of rain was negligible in decreasing residues. 相似文献
