The present study investigated the influence of a hot water dip (HWD) for 2 min at 50 degrees C, a standard and effective treatment for postharvest decay control of citrus fruit, on the nutritional and health-related properties of kumquats. The results show that most of the parameters examined, including titratable acidity, soluble solids content, maturity index, glucose, fructose, sucrose, ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, alpha- and gamma-tocopherols, beta-carotene, zeaxantin, rhoifolin, and antioxidant activity, were not significantly affected by treatment. The levels of beta-cryptoxanthin, narirutin, and total flavonoids increased after HWD, whereas lutein and total phenols decreased. The concentration of the essential oil and the relative percentage of the individual components of the essential oil were not affected by HWD except for the minor compound p-menta-1,5-dien-1-ol, which increased after HWD. After storage, lower levels of glucose, total sugars, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and lutein were recorded in HWD fruit. A decrease in antioxidant activity and increases in alpha-tocopherol and total vitamin E were found both in control and HWD fruit. The influence of HWD at 50 degrees C for 2 min on individual nutraceuticals and health-related properties was thus generally low and may depend on storage conditions.  相似文献

Fusarium wilt is the main pigeonpea production constraint in Malawi. The purpose of the study was to understand the nature and mechanism of inheritance of F. wilt resistance, yield and secondary traits in pigeonpea. 48 crosses were generated in a 12 lines × 4 testers mating scheme. Some F1 plants were selfed for segregation analysis for inheritance pattern of resistance, while others were evaluated for resistance, yield and secondary traits. There were significant variations among F1 plants for F. wilt, days to 50 % flowering, seed/pod, and number of secondary branches. Specific combining ability (SCA) effects were predominant for F. wilt, days to 50 % flowering and number of secondary branches. The general combining ability (GCA) effects, mainly due to maternal genotypes, were preponderant for yield and other secondary traits. The significance of GCA and SCA effects suggested that variations were due to additive gene action in both the testers and parental lines arising from their interactions, and the dominance effects due to interactions of the parental lines. The χ2 analysis suggested dominant patterns of inheritance for wilt in most of the F2 populations. The segregation ratios of 3:1, 15:1, and 9:7 suggested the involvement of single or two independent/complementary dominant genes in the test donors. Involvement of a few genes governing wilt resistance suggested the ease of breeding for this trait. Pedigree breeding method would be recommended for incorporating various traits in pigeonpea.  相似文献

Fusarium root rot (FRR) is a major disease of common bean worldwide. Knowledge of the inheritance of resistance to FRR would be important in devising strategies to breed resistant varieties. Therefore, a 12 × 12 full diallel mating scheme with reciprocal crosses was performed to generate 132 F1 progenies, which were then advanced to the F3. The progenies were evaluated for resistance to FRR under green house conditions in Uganda. General combining ability (GCA) effects were highly significant (P ≤ 0.01) for disease scores. Specific combining ability effects were not significant (P > 0.05) in the F1, but were highly significant (P < 0.01) in the F3 generation. These results indicate that resistance to FRR was governed by genes with additive effects in combination with genes with non-additive effects. Reciprocal differences were also significant (P = 0.01) at F1 and F3, primarily reflecting a large influence of maternal effects in both these generations. In fact, susceptible parents did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) for disease scores when used as paternal parents in the F3, but differed strongly as maternal parents (P = 0.0002). Generally, the progenies were distinctly more resistant when the resistant parent was used as the female in crosses, especially as observed in the F3. The maternal effects were strong in the F3 generation, suggesting a complex form of cytoplasmic–genetic interaction. The non-maternal reciprocal effects in the F3 were significant (P < 0.05) in both the resistant × resistant diallel, and in the resistant × susceptible crosses. Mid-parent heterosis (MPH) occurred in most crosses, with average heterosis approximately equal in each of the three generations, indicating that epistasis was probably more influential than dominance of individual genes. Gene-number formulas indicated that several genes were involved in resistant × susceptible crosses. Among resistant × resistant crosses, many produced continuous distributions of F1 progeny scores, suggesting polygenic inheritance, while bi-modal distributions were characteristic of the F3 distributions, and fit expected ratios for two or three loci segregating in each cross. Dominant forms of epistasis favoring resistance were strongly indicated. Parent–offspring heritability estimates were moderate. Overall, the results indicate that resistant parents contain a number of different resistance genes that can be combined with the expectation of producing strong and durable resistance. The lines MLB-49-89A, MLB-48-89, RWR719 and Vuninkingi, with large and negative GCA effects, contributed high levels of resistance in crosses and would be recommended for use in breeding programs.  相似文献

A method for determining residues of the new reduced-risk pesticide acequinocyl and its deacetylated derivative hydroxyacequinocyl on fruits and vegetables (grapes, lemons, pears, and tomatoes) by HPLC is described. The pesticides were extracted from the fruits and vegetables with hexane and ethyl acetate solution (1:1, v/v), determined by HPLC-DAD at 250 nm and confirmed by LC/MS. No cleanup was necessary. This method is characterized by recoveries (0.01-4 mg/kg) > 77%, while the coefficient of variation was determined to be less than 11%. The limit of quantitation for both acequinocyl and hydroxyacequinocyl was 0.01 mg/kg for all matrixes.  相似文献

Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV) is a major virus disease in Uganda that causes substantial loss of the cowpea crop especially in growth and yield. The mode of gene action conferring resistance to the virus is not well understood. The objective of the study was to determine the genetic inheritance of resistance in cowpea crosses. Three susceptible (S) cowpea landraces that are commonly grown by farmers were crossed with five introduced resistant cowpea varieties in accordance with a North Carolina mating design II scheme. The F1, F2 and BC1F1 progenies generated were evaluated in the field together with their parents. They were then infected with two infection methods namely: by spreader-rows of S cultivar (Ebelat) and artificial inoculation of virus extracts. The results obtained showed that general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant, indicating that both additive and non-additive gene effects controlled virus infection. The results further demonstrated that the GCA effects (59.8?%) were more important than SCA effects (40.2?%) in determining virus resistance in the cowpea varieties. Utilisation of good general combiners of the varieties MU-93, IT82D-516-2, SECOW-2W and IT85F-2841 in hybridisation to improve virus resistance in cowpea crosses would be recommended. The result of this study provided an indication that CABMV resistance was conditioned by more than one recessive gene in eight populations, but also revealed resistance to be conditioned by a single recessive gene in the other seven populations. Observation of continuous distribution of progenies for severity data in the F2 populations also confirmed significance of quantitative inheritance for CABMV resistance. Therefore, the significance of GCA effects suggests that recurrent selection could be applied to accumulate the additive genes for resistance in F2 populations.  相似文献

We applied multivariate analyses to an array of body measures of alpine newt specimens derived from 11 local populations in Greece to describe, analyse and detect patterns and putative causes of within‐population and among‐population morphometric variation. The observed morphometric variation was partitioned into several independently varying aspects of the external phenotype, frequently following variation patterns in different environmental factors. The size and features of the aquatic habitat were found to affect body size, while altitude was found to affect head‐shape variation in both sexes. At the intra‐population level, variation in generalized body size and shape was found to be significantly lower when competitive newt species were present in the habitat, indicating stabilizing selection towards a decrease in inter‐specific competition. No clear discrimination on body size and shape proportions was detected between the two genetic lineages examined, implying ecogenetic or environmentally induced variation rather than phylogeny.  相似文献

The various iron fractions were quantified by selective dissolution (Fed, Feo, Fet) in four Red Mediterranean soils, developed on metarhyolite and metadolerite. They were similar in all profiles. A strong trend of iron removal from the surface horizon and of its subsequent illuvial translocation to the argillic horizons was observed. In all profiles, Feo was not related to the organic matter content indicating the Mediterranean xeric soil environment. The Feo/Fed ratio and the percentage of crystalline iron oxides (Fed-Feo) suggested that the pedoenvironment in which the profiles P1, P2 were formed, allowed the high crystallization of iron oxides. As indicated by the Fed/Fet values, the weathering process was more intense in the metarhyolite-developed soils. In contrast, the metadolerite-developed soils present conditions of poorly crystallized iron oxides and a lower degree of development.  相似文献

Potato varietal resistance to bacterial wilt disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum Yabuuchi et al., (Microbiology and Immunology 39:897–904, 1995) is the best management of the disease. Because the causal pathogen exhibits strong host-pathogen-environment interaction, screening the potential parents for resistance under the target growing environmental conditions is the first important step for effective resistance breeding. The objective of this study was to determine the response to bacterial wilt of selected potato genotypes currently grown by farmers in Kenya and candidate clones from the International Potato Center to identify parents that can be used in the local breeding program to develop resistant cultivars. A study was carried out at Kabete, Kenya for three consecutive seasons between November 2011 and February 2013. Thirty six potato genotypes were planted on an inoculated field at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), Kabete using alpha lattice experimental design with three replications. Data collected were days from planting to onset of wilting (DTOW), bacterial wilt incidence (BWI), total tuber weight (ton ha?1) (TTW), total tuber numbers/hectare (TTN), proportion of ware sized tubers (PWTTW), proportion of symptomatic tubers based on weight (PSTTW), proportion of symptomatic tubers based on tuber numbers (PSTTN) and latent infection (LI) of the tubers. Almost, all the potato genotypes evaluated in this study were susceptible to bacerial wilt. Ranking of genotypes based on resistance differed among the three seasons. On average, the three most resistant genotypes were Kenya Karibu, Kenya Sifa and Ingabire. The study identified eight potato genotypes (Meru, Ingabire, Kenya Karibu, Sherekea, Kihoro, Tigoni, Bishop Gitonga and Cangi) to be used as promising parents for subsequent crosses. The chosen genotypes are prolific in pollen production and popularly grown by Kenyan farmers.  相似文献

Maize ogi was supplemented with 10 and 20% toasted and untoasted okra meals. Yields and chemical composition of ogi, and okra meal, and ogi substituted with okra meal were determined. Brabender paste properties of ogi and ogi substituted with okra meal mixtures were determined. Sensory acceptability of cooked colored and flavored ogi pastes was determined. Yields of ogi were 67.8% while yields of the toasted and untoasted okra seed meals were 35.1 and 39.9% respectively. Supplementing ogi with okra meal increased protein, ash, oil and fiber contents, but reduced ogi viscosity. Addition of yellow color did not significantly improve the color rating, but addition of vanilla flavor improved the flavor of ogi supplemented with untoasted okra meal significantly.  相似文献
