Calibration of an earth-plate forage capacitance meter was conducted on pure stands of Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Medicago sativa L., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. and Trifolium repens L. and a mixture of Trifolium repens and Dactylis glomerata L. Dry weight (DW) prediction equations were developed using the instrument capacitance reading modified by visual estimates of height, stand density and species percentage. In general, meter readings (MR) correlated better with DW than with fresh weight or weight of water and especially when the area harvested exceeded 0·537 m2. Correlation between MR and DW improved with increasing top plate area and with decreasing distance between the top plate (suspended sheet of aluminium) and the earth-plate ground. The use of a plastic shield to suppress the forage to a uniform height caused a reduction in the correlation between MR and DW.
The use of MR to predict DW from selected settings, their linear and curvilinear relationships and several auxiliary observations gave results with R 2 values ranging from 0·94 to 0·99, depending on species and mixture.  相似文献

Haemorrhage into the dominant follicle during the reproductive season is a subtle but definitive cause of infertility in the mare population. This condition however can be of high relevance for an individual in which its incidence is abnormally high. Little is known about the nature and factors affecting the incidence of haemorrhagic anovulatory follicles (HAFs) in the mare. The objectives of the study were to define and characterize the ultrasonographic development and incidence of HAFs and to investigate possible risk factors influencing its occurrence. Detailed reproductive and ultrasound records of seven mares studied during their entire reproductive lives (>10 years and 612 oestrous cycles) were analysed retrospectively and computed into a statistical mixed model. Of all animal studied, two mares were found to have an unusually high incidence of HAFs of approximately 25%. Time of season and use of induction treatments (Cloprostenol) were found to influence its incidence. It appears that early‐enhanced stimulatory effect of LH on an ovary with the presence of small and immature follicles might increase the risk of ovulatory failure of those follicles later in the cycle. Mares during the months of highest follicular activity (May to August) and after treatment with hormones to induce oestrus and ovulation are at greater risk to develop HAFs. The potential relevance of this study is two folds: clinical relevance for the practitioner to better understand this condition and so improve reproductive management of mares with abnormally high incidence; and to provide useful insights for researchers willing to further investigate the nature of this phenomenon.  相似文献

In a breeding experiment conducted to determine the mode of inheritance of progressive spinal myelinopathy, semen from a Murray Grey bull which had previously sired affected calves was used to inseminate 120 cows. Female progeny were then inseminated with semen from the same bull. Of the 51 calves born, six (11.8%) had spinal cord lesions consistent with progressive spinal myelinopathy. From analysis of pedigrees and the results of the breeding experiment it was concluded that the condition was inherited as an autosomal recessive condition in Murray Grey cattle.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the mechanical properties of two stabilization methods for ostectomized equine third metacarpi (MC3): (1) an interlocking nail system and (2) two dynamic compression plates. Animal or Sample Population-Ten pairs of adult equine forelimbs intact from the midradius distally. METHODS: Ten pairs of equine MC3 were divided into two test groups (five pairs each): caudocranial four-point bending and torsion. Interlocking nails (6 hole, 13-mm diameter, 230-mm length) were placed in one randomly selected bone from each pair. Two dynamic compression plates one dorsally (12 hole, 4.5-mm broad) and one laterally (10 hole, 4.5-mm broad) were attached to the contralateral bone from each pair. All bones had 1 cm mid-diaphyseal ostectomies. Five construct pairs were tested in caudocranial four-point bending to determine stiffness and failure properties. The remaining five construct pairs were tested in torsion to determine torsional stiffness and yield load. Mean values for each fixation method were compared using a paired t-test within each group. Significance was set at P<.05. RESULTS: Mean (+/-SEM) values for the MC3-interlocking nail composite and the MC3-double plate composite, respectively, in four-point bending were: composite rigidity, 3,454+/-407.6 Nm/rad and 3,831+/-436.5 Nm/rad; yield bending moment, 276.4+/-40.17 Nm and 433.75+/-83.99 Nm; failure bending moment, 526.3+/-105.9 Nm and 636.2+/-27.77 Nm. There was no significant difference in the biomechanical values for bending between the two fixation methods. In torsion, mean (+/-SEM) values for the MC3-interlocking nail composite and the MC3-double plate composite were: composite rigidity, 124.1+/-16.61 Nm/rad and 262.4+/-30.51 Nm/rad; gap stiffness, 222.3+/-47.32 Nm/rad and 1,557+/-320.9 Nm/rad; yield load, 94.77+/-7.822 Nm and 130.66+/-20.27 Nm, respectively. Composite rigidity, gap stiffness, and yield load for double plate fixation were significantly higher compared with interlocking nail fixation in torsion. CONCLUSIONS: No significant differences in biomechanical properties were identified between an interlocking nail and double plating techniques for stabilization of ostectomized equine MC3 in caudocranial four-point bending. Double plating fixation was superior to interlocking nail fixation in torsion.  相似文献

Three foals aged between 21 and 44 days were presented for evaluation of pyrexia and lameness. Each had subcutaneous abscessation associated with osteomyelitis of a rib at the costochondral junction and pathological fracture of the affected rib; one foal had more than one rib affected. Other localised sites of infection included other sites of osteomyelitis, omphalophlebitis, uveitis, enterocolitis, and calcaneal bursitis. The subcutaneous abscessation and rib osteomyelitis was treated surgically in two foals. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from the subcutaneous abscess in one foal and from the faeces of another. Two of the three foals were euthanased. Ultrasonography was a more useful modality than radiography for establishing the diagnosis of costal osteomyelitis.  相似文献

Abstract. A bacterium resembling Aeromonas salmonicida and determined to be the aetiologic agent of a cutaneous ulcerative disease in goldfish Carassius auratus (L.) was further characterized in this study.
Forty-five isolates of the bacterium (43 from the United States and one each position (moles % guanine plus cytosine) and DNA homology. The bacteriological atypical A. salmonicida previously described. Several important biochemical characteristics distinguished the goldfish isolates from typical A. salmanicida , but the DNA binding experiments indicated a high degree of relatedness between the goldfish isolates and typical A. salmonicida strains.  相似文献

Optimization of the protein to energy ratio in juvenile cobia (Rachycentron canadum) would allow the production of diets that maximize growth without the addition of excess energy that may increase costs or even be detrimental to the health of the fish. During a 6‐week growth trial, juvenile cobia (5.6 ± 0.5 g fish?1 initial weight) were fed five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing various protein to energy ratios using starch as the energy source. At the end of the trial, some fish were analysed for body composition characteristics while the rest were used to examine the excretion of dietary starch in the feces. Survival and growth were not significantly affected, but feed efficiency (ranging from 0.64 to 0.94) and daily consumption (ranging from 45.3 to 64.1 g kg?1 of body weight d?1) were affected. No reduction in consumption due to excess energy was noted. Analysis of the fecal carbohydrate data showed a linear relationship between dietary inclusion and excretion of carbohydrates with no sign of reaching saturation. Results of this study suggest that cobia can utilize dietary carbohydrates up to at least 340 g kg?1 of dry diet with an optimal protein to energy ratio of approximately 34 mg protein kJ?1metabolizable energy.  相似文献

Abstract

AIM: To determine the amount of ergovaline and lysergic acid retained or excreted by geldings fed endophyte-infected seed containing known concentrations of these alkaloids, and the effects of exposure time on clinical expression of toxicosis.

METHODS: Mature geldings (n=10) received diets containing either endophyte-free (E-) or endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue seed during three experimental phases. The first phase (Days ?14 to ?1) was an adaptation phase, to allow all horses to adapt to a diet containing E- tall fescue seed. The second (Days 0 to 3) was the initial exposure phase to E+ tall fescue seed, used for the delivery of ergovaline and lysergic acid at 0.5 and 0.3 mg/kg of diet, respectively, to test the initial effects of exposure on routes and amounts of elimination of alkaloid. During this phase, half the geldings were exposed to an E+ diet while the rest served as controls by remaining on the E- diet. Once assigned to treatments, geldings remained on the same diet through the third phase (Days 4 to 21), which served as the extended exposure phase. Total outputs of faeces and urine were collected within each phase, to determine retention of ergovaline and lysergic acid and nutrient digestibility. Serum was collected weekly and analysed for activities of enzymes and concentrations of prolactin. Bodyweights (BW) and rectal temperatures were recorded weekly.

RESULTS: BW, rectal temperature, enzyme activities and concentrations of prolactin in serum, and nutrient digestibility were not affected by treatment. Total intake of ergovaline by geldings on the E+ diet was 3.5 and 3.6 (SE 0.20) mg/day, and 2.1 and 2.3 (SE 0.11) mg/day were not accounted for in initial and extended phases, respectively. Lysergic acid was excreted in the urine (4.0 and 4.9 (SE 0.97) mg/day) and faeces (2.5 and 2.7 (SE 0.35) mg/day) at greater amounts than that consumed (2.0 and 1.9 (SE 0.09) mg/day) during the initial and extended exposure phases, respectively. Animals exposed to E+ seed for a period of 20 days appeared to excrete more (1.5 vs 1.2 mg/day; SE 0.08; p=0.03) ergovaline in the faeces than those exposed for only 4 days.

CONCLUSIONS: Exposure time to the ergot alkaloids had a limited effect on the route of elimination or the amounts of ergovaline or lysergic acid excreted by horses. The primary alkaloid excreted was lysergic acid, and urine was the major route of elimination. These data will aid future research to improve animals′ tolerance to toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue.  相似文献
