Ultraviolet laser microprobe analyses of a calcium-aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) from the Allende meteorite suggest that a line with a slope of exactly 1.00 on a plot of delta17O against delta18O represents the primitive oxygen isotope reservoir of the early solar nebula. Most meteorites are enriched in 17O and 18O relative to this line, and their oxygen isotope ratios can be explained by mass fractionation or isotope exchange initiating from the primitive reservoir. These data establish a link between the oxygen isotopic composition of the abundant ordinary chondrites and the primitive 16O-rich component of CAIs. 相似文献

We investigated the distribution of sand pine (Pinus clausa) seedlings in relation to the locations of hardwoods and palmettos that had resprouted in five recently clear-cut and one burned stand in sand pine scrub vegetation in Ocala National Forest (Florida, USA). We also studied how the shade and mechanical support provided by the taller resprouts affect the allometry and biomechanics of sand pine seedling stems. Although soil surface temperatures were higher and soil moisture contents (0–5 cm) were lower in open than in covered microsites, sand pine seedling densities did not vary in relation to proximity to resprouted hardwoods and palmettos. There was no apparent nurse plant effect on sand pine seedling distributions, but seedlings that grew up under the resprouts had larger whole stem flexibilities, greater height:diameter ratios, and less tapered stems. In response to the mechanical support and shade of neighboring plants, sand pine seedlings grow taller per unit investment in stem tissue, thereby shortening the period during which they presumably suffer from above-ground competition. This biomechanical plasticity increases the rates at which sand pine seedlings can overtop their resprouted competitors. 相似文献

The effects of the NH4:NO3 ratio in replenishment solution on Rosa L. flower yield and the impact of NH4 substitution by urea on plant performance and on solution EC and pH have not been studied previously in closed (no leaching) hydroponic systems. A greenhouse experiment with six NH4:NO3:urea ratios (0:100:0, 12:88:0, 25:75:0, 50:50:0, 100:0:0 and 0:50:50) and two harvest cycles (winter and spring) was carried out to investigate these relationships. In winter, total and >40 cm cut flower yields were maximal in treatment 25:75:0. At lower NH4 percentages (12.5:87.5:0 and 0:100:0), growth container solution pH varied between 7.8 and 8.5, reducing P, Ca and Mn concentration in leaves and increasing dry matter allocated to them. At higher NH4 percentages, Ca uptake was inhibited, solution pH reached 3, and %P in leaves increased. Consequently, reducing sugars concentration in leaves increased and sucrose and starch concentrations decreased. A stepwise regression analysis indicated that the optimal NH4:NO3 ratio in feed solution is 40:60, with resulting solution pH of 5.9 in the growth container. In spring the maximum yield was obtained in treatment 0:50:50 and it exceeded the winter yield despite a higher solution EC (4.3 dS m−1 vs. 3.5 dS m−1 at harvest). The beneficial effect of urea (0:50:50 vs. 50:50:0) stemmed from the relatively lower NH4 concentration in solution, that alleviated the NH4–Ca uptake competition, and higher pH. The slope of the straight line relating [H+ efflux rate] to [NH4+ uptake rate] in treatments 25:75:0, 50:50:0 and 100:0:0 was 0.44 mol H+/mol NH4. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of hypovolemia on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in the dog. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, cross-over trial. ANIMAL POPULATION: Six healthy intact mixed breed female dogs weighing 18.2-29.0 kg. METHODS: Dogs were randomly assigned to determine the MAC of isoflurane in a normovolemic or hypovolemic state with a minimum of 18 days between trials. On both occasions, anesthesia was initially induced and maintained for 40 minutes with isoflurane delivered in oxygen while vascular catheters were placed in the cephalic vein and dorsal metatarsal artery. In dogs assigned to the hypovolemic group, 30 mL kg(-1) of blood was removed at 1 mL kg(-1) minute(-1) from the arterial catheter. All dogs were allowed to recover from anesthesia. Thirty minutes after the discontinuation of isoflurane, anesthesia was re-induced with isoflurane in oxygen delivered by face mask. The tracheas were intubated, and connected to an anesthetic machine with a Bain anesthetic circuit. Mechanical ventilation was instituted at a rate of 10 breaths minute(-1) with the tidal volume set to deliver 10-15 mL kg(-1). Airway gases were monitored continuously and tidal volume was adjusted to maintain an end-tidal carbon dioxide level of 35-40 mmHg (4.67-5.33 kPa). Body temperature was maintained at 37-38 degrees C (98.6-100.4 degrees F). The MAC determination was performed using an electrical stimulus applied to the toe web and MAC was defined as the mean value of end-tidal isoflurane between the concentrations at which a purposeful movement did and did not occur in response to the electrical stimulus. The MAC values were compared between groups using a Student's t-test. RESULTS: The MAC of isoflurane was significantly less in hypovolemic dogs (0.97 +/- 0.03%) compared with normovolemic dogs (1.15 +/- 0.02%) (p < 0.0079). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The MAC of isoflurane is reduced in dogs with hypovolemia resulting from hemorrhage. Veterinarians should be prepared to deliver a lower percentage of isoflurane to maintain anesthesia in hypovolemic dogs during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. 相似文献

Recently, the Kunjin strain of West Nile virus (WNVKUN) has been detected using qRT‐PCR in belly skin lesions of farmed juvenile saltwater crocodiles. This follows an established association between similar lesions and West Nile virus in American alligators. The lesions present as cutaneous lymphohistiocytic aggregates in the dermal layers of both species. While these lesion do not create an obvious defect on the live crocodile, upon tanning the lesion area collapses and does not uptake the dye evenly, thus reducing its aesthetic appeal. As a result, skins are being rejected jeopardising the economic viability of the Australian crocodile industry. Over 50 skin lesions have since been confirmed as WNVKUN‐positive and preliminary evidence of lesion restructuring is presented. Horizontal transmission of WNVKUN by mosquitoes is well‐established but other transmission routes, such as ingestion and cloacal shedding, need further evaluation. An infection trial is currently underway to ensure WNVKUN is the causative agent of these skin lesions. 相似文献

The Massachusetts Acid Rain Monitoring project surveyed 80.5% of the state's 5294 named water bodies between 1983 and 1985. PH and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) were measured monthly the first 14 mo and semi-annually afterwards. Sample collection and analysis were performed by volunteers. The majority of surface waters in Massachusetts were found to be sensitive to possible long term acidification, with 63% exhibiting ANC less than 200 μeq L?1 and 22% with ANC less than 40 μeq L?1. Seasonal patterns in ANC were observed, the median ANC being 384 μeq L?1 in summer/fall and 134 μeq L?1 in winter/spring. Geographical differences were also found across the state: the streams and lakes with lowest pH and ANC were located in the southeastern and north-central parts of the state, while the most alkaline surface waters were found in the western-most part of the state, which is the only area of the state with significant limestone deposits. 相似文献

Effect of soil compaction by tractor traffic on soil structure, denitrification, and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In a field experiment with soil compaction by tractor traffic on a loam soil, the denitrification rate (using the C2 H2 inhibition method), the soil structure, and the wheat yield were investigated. Tractor traffic on wet soil (> – 50 mbar matric potential) reduced the pore volume, doubled the percentage of large aggregates (> 20 mm), reduced the wheat yield by about 25%, and increased the N-loss through denitrification by a factor of 3–4. Neither of these parameters were affected by tractor traffic at low soil moisture content. The weight of the tractor (1800 kg vs 4800 kg) did not significantly alter the effect of compaction on the measured parameters. There was a factor of 2–6 between the measured denitrification rate in compacted and that in uncompacted soil, and this factor showed little dependence on the average activity level on each date of measurement. Accumulated values for the measured denitrification during 75 days (May 23-August 9) were 3–5 kg N ha–1 in uncompacted soil and 15–20 kg N ha–1 in soil which was compacted in wet condition. 相似文献

Optically gated recording and nonvolatile readout in a digital volume holographic data storage system that uses a pair of mutually incoherent light sources during recording and only one for readout were demonstrated recently. This approach used stoichiometric lithium niobate, which after post-growth processing gave rise to an at least two orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity over the best materials reported previously. It is also shown that by adding certain dopants (iron and manganese) to near-stoichiometric lithium niobate, the dark storage time and gating efficiency can be increased compared with previous work. The underlying physical mechanisms of gated recording and the effectiveness of the gating process responsible for this manifold improved performance are discussed, and bipolarons and small polarons are identified as the responsible photorefractive species. 相似文献
