A laboratory study evaluated the effect of rate (0, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 mg/kg) and mode of application of the urease inhibitor N -( n -butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (nBTPT) (coating the urea granule, adding to the urea melt or adding to urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solutions) on NH3 volatilization from urea, at three temperatures (5, 15 and 25 °C), with four contrasting soil types. Daily ammonia loss was measured for up to 21 days after surface N application, using ventilated soil enclosures. Ammonia loss from unamended urea varied with soil type and temperature and ranged from 8.2 to 31.9% of the N applied. nBTPT was highly effective in lowering NH3 volatilization from urea and in delaying the time of maximum rate of loss. The average % inhibition over all soils, temperatures and formulations was 61.2, 69.9, 74.2, 79.2 and 79.8% for the 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 mg/kg nBTPT concentration, respectively. The % inhibition with nBTPT was lower at 15 °C compared with at 5 or 25 °C and was lower in UAN solutions than in granular products. There was little difference between the melted and coated granular products in lowering NH3 loss or in soil N transformations. The stability of nBTPT in urea products was dependent on its mode of application and on the storage temperature. Incorporating nBTPT in the urea melt produced a more homogeneous product with superior stability than coating the urea granule.  相似文献

It is conservatively estimated that some form of lens opacity is present in 5% to 7% of horses with otherwise clinically normal eyes.These opacities can range from small epicapsular remnants of the fetal vasculature to dense and extensive cataract. A cataract is defined technically as any opacity or alteration in the optical homogeneity of the lens involving one or more of the following: anterior epithelium, capsule, cortex, or nucleus. In the horse, cataracts rarely involve the entire lens structure (ie, complete cataracts) and are more usually localized to one anatomic landmark or sector of the lens. Complete cataracts are invariably associated with overt and significant visual disability. Focal or incomplete cataracts alone seldom cause any apparent visual dysfunction in affected horses,however.  相似文献

The nitrogen contribution of cowpea [ Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] above-ground biomass was estimated using the per cent nitrogen and per cent dry matter of 24 cowpea entries. Cowpea growth stage was assigned a maturity index, and an 'N factor' was calculated. Results for this species-specific 'N factor' ranged from 12.5 at the vegetative stage to 13.5 at the reproductive stage. Using the 'rule of 16' as developed for sampling the fresh biomass of other legume cover crops, the amount of nitrogen contributed by cowpeas can be estimated by using an average 'N factor' of 13.  相似文献

Distal ulnar ostectomy may be performed palliatively in patients with distal ulnar osteosarcoma. Concurrent arthrodesis of the carpus has been proposed to counteract joint instability following transection of carpal ligaments associated with removal of the distal ulna. The objective of this prospective one group pretest, posttest study was to assess stability of the carpus following distal ulnar ostectomy using pre‐ and postoperative stress radiographic views in a group of canine cadaver limbs. Seven thoracic limbs from six canine cadavers weighing more than 20 kg were obtained. Lateral and dorsopalmar, extended lateral, medial stress, and lateral stress radiographs were made before and after distal ulnar ostectomy. Presurgical canine cadaver carpal angle measurements were as follows (mean ± standard deviation): extension 205.9° ± 5.4; medial stress 25.1° ± 5.7; and lateral stress 13.3° ± 5.2°. Cadaver limb joint angles exceeded those previously reported in live dogs. A significant increase in carpal angle was noted following ulnar ostectomy. The mean increases in carpal angle were as follows: (mean ± standard deviation (95% confidence interval)): extension 6.2° ± 4.9 (2.6–9.8) (P = 0.007); medial stress 3.2° ± 3.0 (1.0–5.5) (P = 0.015); lateral stress 6.2° ± 5.2 (2.4–10.1) (P = 0.010). Findings from this cadaver study support the use of supplementary stabilization for clinical patients undergoing distal ulnar ostectomy. Future studies are needed in clinical patients to evaluate changes in limb positioning and gait associated with distal ulnar ostectomy.  相似文献

The acid-base status of the extracellular fluid is directly affected by the concentrations of strong basic cations and strong acid anions that are absorbed into the bloodstream from the diet. The objective of this study was to develop and characterize a model for dietary acid challenge in sheep by decreasing the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) using NutriChlor (HCl-treated canola meal), an anionic feed supplement. Ten fully fleeced sheep (Rideau-Arcott, 54.3 +/- 6.7 kg of BW) were fed either a control supplement [200 g/d of canola meal, DCAD = 184 mEq/kg of DM, calculated as (Na+ + K+) - (Cl- + S2-)] or an anionic supplement (AS; 200 g/d of NutriChlor, DCAD = -206 mEq/kg of DM) offered twice daily at 0700 and 1100 in a randomized complete block design. The sheep were individually housed and limit-fed a basal diet of dehydrated alfalfa pellets (22% CP and 1.2 Mcal of NE(g)/kg, DM basis) at 1.1 kg of DM/d offered twice daily at 1000 and 1300. Two days before the beginning of the experiment, the sheep were fitted with vinyl catheters (0.86-mm i.d., 1.32-mm o.d.) in the left jugular vein to facilitate blood sampling. Blood and urine samples were obtained daily from 1100 to 1130 on d 1 through 9 and at 0700, 1000, 1300, 1600, and 1900 on d 10. Blood was analyzed for hematocrit, plasma pH, gases, strong ions, and total protein. Urine samples were analyzed for pH. The AS induced a nonrespiratory acid-base disturbance associated with lower (P < 0.05) plasma pH (7.47 vs. 7.39), lower (P < 0.05) urine pH (8.13 vs. 6.09), and lower (P < 0.05) strong ion difference (42.5 vs. 39.5). The AS reduced (P < 0.05) the concentration of plasma glucose, base excess, and bicarbonate and increased (P < 0.05) the concentration of K+ and Cl-. Lowering DCAD increased (P < 0.05) Ca2+ concentrations in plasma by 13%. In conclusion, this dietary model successfully induced a significant acid-base disturbance in sheep. Although the acidifying effects of negative DCAD in the diet may have short-term prophylactic effects of elevating the concentration of Ca2+ in plasma, negative DCAD may have detrimental effects on acid-base balance.  相似文献

Alternative N fertiliser management strategies are needed to increase N-use efficiency in wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.). In the wet season of 1993–1994, field experiments were conducted to evaluate the band placement of urea solution in comparison with broadcast prilled urea, neem-coated urea, or point-placement of urea supergranules. Both grain yield and N-use efficiency were higher with band placement of urea solution (50 or 100 kg N ha-1) compared to a conventional split application of prilled urea at 100 kg N ha-1. The total 15N recovery was 58.7 and 51.7% with band placement of urea solution at 50 and 100 kg N ha-1, respectively, compared with 47.8% for neem-coated urea and 28.5% for a conventional split application of prilled urea. Potatoes produce a number of toxic secondary metabolites, which are divided into two groups: the sesquiterpenes and the glycoalkaloids (PGAs): whereas PGAs are largely preformed and present in toxic quantities in both the foliage and "green" potatoes, it is well documented that the levels of PGAs and sesquiterpenes are effected by many biotic an abiotic stresses. The development of genetically modified potato varieties has made it prudent to ascertain whether there may be changes in the amounts or types of these secondary metabolites either as a direct effect of the transgene or due to its interactions with environmental variables. Transgenic potato lines were exposed, along with nontransgenic lines, to a range of biotic and abiotic stresses and a range of environmental conditions in the field and store. Following stressing, a comparison was made of levels of potato glycoalkaloid and sesquiterpene levels between the two groups. Significant differences were observed in the levels of both glycoalkaloid and sesquiterpene levels between transgenic and control material and between infected and noninfected material.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Improved education of veterinarians and equine owners/managers is essential in implementing parasite control strategies that are less reliant on chemicals. Methods: This questionnaire study, conducted on 61 UK Thoroughbred (TB) establishments during 2009 and 2010, was designed to obtain an understanding of current helminth control practices on studs. To our knowledge, this is the first occasion that statements obtained from TB studs via questionnaire have been supported by statistical analysis. Results: Despite many respondents indicating high levels of concern regarding anthelmintic resistance, 56% of these establishments that received visiting equines co‐grazed these animals with permanent stock and <74% administered anthelmintics prior to integration. In the 12 months preceding the study, most respondents administered frequent macrocyclic lactone (ML) treatments, with none appearing to leave any animals in groups untreated at each administration. Indiscriminate whole group treatments with MLs and movement of animals to ‘clean grazing’ post treatment (reported by >25% of respondents), indicates that many stud owners/managers are not aware of the strong risk factors for the development of anthelmintic resistance. Few studs had conducted faecal egg count (FEC) analysis in the past and only 22% indicated that they considered this form of analysis beneficial in determining anthelmintic choice. Conclusions and potential relevance: The challenge now is to convince stud owners/managers to deviate from their current practices to control strategies that are more likely to preserve anthelmintic efficacy. Veterinarians need to get more involved in implementing these control strategies, with better emphasis placed on the role of diagnostic tests in facilitating targeted treatments and in investigating anthelmintic sensitivity in the associated nematode populations.  相似文献
