Primary lacrimal gland adenocarcinoma of the third eyelid in a horse

A 5-year-old Draft Horse gelding presented for evaluation of a large, fleshy, ulcerated third eyelid mass OD of 3 weeks duration. Complete ophthalmic examination, ocular ultrasound and skull radiographs revealed a large soft-tissue mass involving the entire third eyelid OD and extending into the ventral right orbit to the level of the globe equator. No other abnormalities were noted on physical or ophthalmic examination. Surgical removal via exenteration was performed 3 months after initial presentation. A lacrimal adenocarcinoma of the third eyelid was diagnosed based on histopathology. Concurrent asymptomatic intra-ductal and intra-acinar Demodex caballi parasites were found in the eyelid sebaceous glands, likely as an incidental finding. No tumor recurrence or metastasis has occurred 12 months after excision. To the author's knowledge, this case is the first reported primary lacrimal adenocarcinoma in a horse. Complete surgical excision was curative.     

Feline lymphocytes: observations on surface membrane concanavalin A receptor mobility

The mechanics of concanavalin A receptor mobility of the feline lymphocyte surface membrane were investigated, utilizing fluorescein-labeled lectin to quantitate lymphocyte capping. The results of this study indicated that lectin concentration and buffer selection were critical for extensive receptor redistribution with cap formation of feline lymphocytes. Maximal capping was obtained with 50 microgram of concanavalin A/ml of minimal essential medium. The mean capping rate of peripheral blood lymphocytes increased significantly with colchicine exposure at 10(-7) M concentration. The mean values of capping increased slightly with advancing age of feline donors, although this difference was not statistically significant. Concurrent work has indicated that concanavalin A capping may be useful in the study of immunosuppression in feline leukemia virus-infected cats.     

Micromechanical "Trampoline" magnetometers for use in large pulsed magnetic fields

A silicon micromechanical magnetometer was constructed and successfully used in 60-tesla pulsed magnetic fields of less than 100-millisecond duration. The device is small, inexpensive to fabricate, and easy to use. It features a fast mechanical response (up to 50,000 hertz) and extremely high sensitivity yet is relatively robust against electrical and mechanical noise. Quantum oscillations in the magnetization of a 1-microgram sample of an organic superconductor, kappa-[bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene]2Cu(NCS)2, have been observed with this device.     

Major compositional units of the moon: lunar prospector thermal and fast neutrons

Global maps of thermal and fast neutron fluxes from the moon suggest three end-member compositional units. A high thermal and low fast neutron flux unit correlates with the lunar highlands and is consistent with feldspathic rocks. The South Pole-Aitken basin and a strip that surrounds the nearside maria have intermediate thermal and fast neutron flux levels, consistent with more mafic rocks. There appears to be a smooth transition between the most mafic and feldspathic compositions, which correspond to low and high surface altitudes, respectively. The maria show low thermal and high fast neutron fluxes, consistent with basaltic rocks.     

Lunar Fe and Ti abundances: comparison of lunar prospector and clementine data

The Lunar Prospector neutron spectrometer data correlate well with iron and titanium abundances obtained through analysis of Clementine spectral reflectance data. With the iron and titanium dependence removed, the neutron spectrometer data also reveal regions with enhanced amounts of gadolinium and samarium, incompatible rare earth elements that are enriched in the final phases of magma crystallization. These regions are found mainly around the ramparts of the Imbrium impact basin but not around the other basins, including the much larger and deeper South Pole-Aitken basin. This result confirms the compositional uniqueness of the surface and interior of the Imbrium region.     

Repeated suppression of lymphocyte blastogenesis following vaccinations of CPV-immune dogs with modified-live CPV vaccines

A commercially available modified-live canine parvovirus (CPV) vaccine was evaluated for its immunosuppressive properties in eight random-bred dogs, all with circulatory antibody to CPV. Three of the eight dogs exhibited a significant decrease in lymphocyte blastogenesis after vaccine administration. In these dogs, this decrease in blastogenesis was of short duration and was consistently observed after repeated administrations of the vaccine. Neither gastroenteritis, fever nor leukopenia, signs indicative of virulent canine parvovirus infection, were detected in these animals. In addition, lymphocytes from these dogs lacked Ia antigen expression. This study demonstrated that the immunomodulating effects of ML-CPV is not observed in all animals yet is consistent in affected individuals.     

Evaluation of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase expression in bone marrow of clinically normal and feline leukemia virus-exposed cats

Bone marrow cells from 8 specific-pathogen-free and 11 feline leukemia virus-exposed cats were examined for the expression of the nuclear antigen terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). Using a standard indirect immunofluorescence technique, feline leukemia-exposed cats had increased expression of TdT in bone marrow aspirates (2.0% to 29.0%) when compared with that in bone marrow cells from specific-pathogen-free cats (2.5% to 6.0%). Seemingly, TdT can be used as an antigenic marker in leukemogenesis of FeLV-infected cats.
