Inbred lines of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) have been produced utilising the rare self-fertility (Sf) allele. Twenty-two
lines of four distinct groups have been maintained through five generations of selfing by single seed descent. Fourteen lines
were used in crosses to produce F1s. Both parents and hybrids were analysed for a range of morphological characters. Positive heterosis for dry matter production
was observed in half the hybrids. No other trait showed significant heterosis. The degree of heterosis appears to be related
to the extent of variation in morphological characters between the parental lines, some combinations of lines yielding heterotic
hybrids in all cases, others in none. The majority of the F1 hybrids are superior in terms of dry matter production to eight control varieties.

The average number of survivors of fast-growing medic rhizobia (3 strains), fast-growing Rhizobium leguminosarum types (6 strains) and slow-growing species (9 strains) following desiccation of sandy soil inoculated with 106 bacteria·g?1 soil was 727, 795 and 15,682 bacteria·g?1 soil, respectively. Survival in desiccated sandy soil was not influenced by the degree of extracellular polysaccharide production in strains of R. trifolii, nor was it influenced by growth of R. meliloti and slow-growing species in media of low water activity before desiccation in sandy soil.A progressive increase in numbers of fast-growing bacteria surviving desiccation was observed in sandy soil amended with increasing concentrations of powdered montmorillonite, but not with mont-morillonite added as a suspension to the soil. The clay had either a detrimental effect or no effect on the survival of the slow-growing rhizobia. Maltose, sucrose and polyvinylpyrrolidonc provided a greater degree of protection to both fast- and slow-growing rhizobia than was obtained with montmorillonite. The effect of polyethylene glycol 6000 was similar to the effect of montmorillonite, as the polymer only protected the fast-growing rhizobia and not the slow-growing species. 相似文献

The use of chlorine dioxide (ClO(2)) as a potential substitute for aqueous chlorine to improve the quality of seafood products has not been approved by regulatory agencies due to health concerns related to the production of chlorite (ClO(2)(-)) and chlorate (ClO(3)(-)) as well as possible mutagenic/carcinogenic reaction products. Cubes of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and red grouper (Epinephelus morio) were treated with 20 or 200 ppm aqueous chlorine or ClO(2) solutions for 5 min, and extracts of the treated fish cubes and test solutions were checked for mutagenicity using the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay. No mutagenic activity was detected in the treated fish samples or test solutions with ClO(2). Only the sample treated with 200 ppm chlorine showed weak mutagenic activity toward S. typhimurium TA 100. No chlorite residue was detected in sea scallops, mahi-mahi, or shrimp treated with ClO(2) at 3.9-34.9 ppm. However, low levels of chlorate residues were detected in some of the treated samples. The molecular characteristics of two purified arabinoxylan fractions derived from corn kernels, corn fiber gum-1 and -2 (CFG-1 and -2), have been studied and correlated with emulsifying properties. CFG-1 and -2 fractions were isolated from different corn fiber sources by 1) a sequential alkaline extraction and H2O2 bleaching to produce CFG-1; and 2) additional H2O2 treatment of the alkali-extracted residue at pH 11.5, yielding CFG-2. Multiangle laser light-scattering and online viscosity were used to measure the molar mass, polydispersity, structure compactness, and intrinsic viscosity of the generated CFG fractions. Emulsification properties in an oil-in-water emulsion system with 10:1 oil-to-gum ratio was investigated by measuring turbidity of an aliquot from the bottom of the diluted emulsion over 10 days. The isolated CFG-2 from each fiber source was higher in weight-average molar mass (Mw) polydispersity) (Mw/Mn) and structure compactness, and also lower in solution weight-average intrinsic viscosity (ηw) than the corresponding CFG-1. Malaysian rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars MR84 and MR185 were grown in greenhouse chambers and exposed to four different levels of ozone from 28th August, 2001 to 22nd January, 2002. Four ozone levels were selected in close relation to the Malaysian peri-urban ambient level (approximately 30 ppb, 8 hr mean), the Malaysian guideline level (approximately 60 ppb) and possible future higher ozone levels (approximately 90 ppb). Both morphological and physiological parameters showed distinctive impacts of ozone treatments. The plants treated with the highest ozone concentration showed different morphological development, probably induced by severe foliar injury and physiological adaptation of the plants to the ozone stress. The physiological measurements revealed a high sensitivity at the early and late vegetative stages. It was concluded that MR84, which was found to be physiologically sensitive, responded to ozone relatively quickly and altered its morphology to compensate for effects on growth and yield, while MR185, found to be physiologically insensitive, responded to ozone stress slowly which resulted in more severe impacts on growth and yield parameters. Slight growth stimulation was observed at the lowest (30 ppb) ozone level for MR185, whilst negative impacts on growth occurred at both of the higher ozone levels. The study provided useful insights into the earlier findings of an open-top chamber filtration study on the same cultivars in the field at a peri-urban site in Malaysia. The present study proved that yield could be reduced substantially when other parameters associated with grain yield were affected, which was accompanied by increasing yellowing of leaves and premature senescence. 相似文献
