Rice paddies are an important human-made ecosystem for the global CH4 budget. CH4, which is produced in the predominantly anaerobic bulk soil layers, is oxidized significantly before it reaches the atmosphere.
Roots of rice, in addition to supporting the consumption of CH4, contribute to the total CH4 production in the soil. The various controls of CH4 emission from this ecosystem depend on the structure of plant and microbial communities and their interactions. Availability
of organic substrates, electron acceptors and other soil- and plant-related factors influence the activities of microbial
communities. Agronomic practices including fertilization and application of pesticides have effects on CH4 emission. Recent studies using molecular retrieval approaches with small subunit rRNA-encoding gene (rDNA) sequences and
functional genes, showed the richness of diversity of the microbial community in rice paddy soils, which includes members
of the Archaea and methanotrophs. There is need for further research to know the consequences, at the ecosystem level, of changes in microbial
diversity and microbial communities in paddy soils. This will aid in understanding the mechanisms involved in the mitigating
effects of certain agricultural practices.

An experiment was conducted by planting Hardwickia binata Roxb. at 200, 400 and 800 trees ha???1, intercrops viz., Brassica campestris (mustard) and Glycine max (soybean) were sown from the second year onwards in winter and summer respectively at the National Research Centre for Agroforestry, Jhansi, U.P., India with the objectives of evaluating agrosilvicultural potential of the system and to study the effect of tree densities on ecophysiology of understorey crops. Tree growth was affected by both density and intercrop in the initial years of growth. Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) available to the intercrops reduced with increasing densities. Transpiration rate and stomatal conductance in intercrops decreased due to the presence of trees. No significant changes in leaf temperature were observed till the fifth year of the growing season. Yield was significantly higher in pure crop in comparison with all the densities in mustard. Soybean yield under 200 trees ha???1 was comparable to that of the pure crop. Trees at the density of 200 trees ha???1 provided a conducive microenvironment to the intercrops. 相似文献

In a substantial rice–wheat cropping system area of South Asia, wheat sowing often gets too delayed and exposed to terminal heat stress. Therefore, farmers prefer varieties that are able to perform well under a short growing period. Tissue culturally regenerated plants of wheat variety cv. HUW 234, the most widely cultivated variety of North Eastern Plain Zone (NEPZ) of India were screened using immature embryo as explant. Days to heading and maturity, yield and other yield components and resistance to leaf rust and spot blotch were evaluated. A few somaclones in R3 and R4 generations displayed significant earliness for days to heading and maturity, improved yield traits and resistance to leaf rust and spot blotch diseases. The superior performance of two of the variants was confirmed in the R5 generation in 3 years of testing under two dates of conventional and zero-till sowing. Stability analysis also suggested superiority of the two somaclones across 12 environments. This appeared to confirm the possibility of obtaining useful somaclonal variants of wheat for very late sown as well as zero-till managed agriculture. The superior performing somaclones can be used as parents in the ongoing breeding programmes targeting late sown wheat in South Asia exposed to terminal heat stress. 相似文献

The in vitro inhibitory effect of protease inhibitors from four seed extracts (soybean, grasspea, black gram and horse gram) on digestive proteases of rohu was assessed by enzyme inhibition assay and substrate sodium dodecyl sulphate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. High proteolytic activity was detected in the intestinal extract of rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings at two different pH ranges (8–8.5 and 10–11). That protein digestion occurs mainly in the alkaline condition in this fish without a stomach is evident from very high trypsin activity (0.95±0.04 benzoyl‐dl ‐arginine‐p‐nitroanilide U mg protein−1) in the intestine. In case of grass pea seed, more than 50% inhibition of alkaline protease activity was recorded when the ratio of inhibitor to enzyme was 9.41 μg U−1. More than 40% inhibition of protease activity was recorded in case of horse gram seed when the ratio of inhibitor to enzyme was 5.51 μg U−1. Black gram at 11.0 μg U−1 and soybean seed proteins at 62.75 μg U−1 resulted in 50% and more than 30% inhibition of digestive protease activity in rohu fingerlings respectively. A plot of the inhibition values obtained by changing the relative concentrations of enzyme/inhibitor resulted in different dose–response curves for different protein sources. The use of substrate gel electrophoresis allowed the visualization of the aforementioned differences in inhibition. Each seed extract produced a characteristic profile of protease inhibition. It is concluded that protease inhibitors present in plant protein sources adversely affect the digestive proteases in fish and hence there is a need to eliminate/reduce the amount of such inhibitors through proper processing before incorporation into aquafeeds. 相似文献

Technical characteristics and detergent compatibility of visceral alkaline proteases of three freshwater fish, namely Labeo rohita, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus and Cyprinus carpio of different feeding habits, were studied. Crude enzyme extract was partially purified by (NH4)2SO4 precipitation and dialysis. The molecular weight was in the range of 20–63 kDa. The enzyme purification folds post‐dialysis were found to be 1.55, 1.81 and 2.17 in case of Rohu, Pangas and Common carp respectively. The alkaline protease from Rohu, Pangas and Common carp exhibited maximum activity at pH 10.0, 9.0 and 11.0 respectively. The enzyme temperature optima observed were 60°C (Rohu and Pangas) and 70°C (Common carp). SBTI and EDTA inhibited more than 90% of the activity at conc. of 50 mM. Exposure of the proteases to non‐ionic surfactants like Tween 20–80 retained about 92%–100% and 76%–100% of their activity at conc. (v/v) of 1% and 5% respectively. Proteases were found less stable in the presence of SDS. There was moderate to lesser influence of H2O2 and sodium perborate on the proteolytic activity. The alkaline protease from omnivorous fish was found superior compared to the herbivore and carnivore in respect of pH and temperature optima and stability with detergents and oxidizing agents. 相似文献

The activity of cellulase was determined in the intestine of rohu, Labeo rohita, fingerlings fed on separate dietary formulations incorporating Leucaena leaf meal and synthetic cellulose at 20% level in proportional replacement of the ingredients from the fish-meal-based reference diet. Three more replicate experimental diets were prepared by incorporating 1% tetra-cycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, into the former three dietary formulations so as to circumvent the action of microflora in digestive function. Cellulase activity was found to be highest in fish fed on the cellulose incorporated diet, followed by those maintained on the plant-protein-based and reference diets, respectively. A diet-dependent variation in cellulase activity was apparent. However, a sharp decline in the level of cellulase activity was observed in the fish fed diets containing tetracycline, which is supposed to have destroyed all the gut microflora. The microbial culture of intestinal and hepatopancreatic extracts also confirmed the absence of microflora in the fish fed tetracycline-compounded diets. The study indicates that cellulase activity in rohu is largely contributed by the intestinal microflora, while the reduced activity recorded in the fish reared on antibiotic-compounded diets may be due to the presence of some other source of cellulase secretion apart from cellulolytic microbial action. The information generated from the present investigation might contribute towards better feed formulation for carp at low cost, incorporating plant-based feed ingredients. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998 相似文献

Aquaculture is faced with the challenges of the use of synthetic compounds as growth enhancers and the presence of several contaminants in water. These factors severely deteriorate the quality and quantity of aquaculture products. Phytochemicals play a major role by working as antioxidant agents of which curcumin has become the gold standard. Curcumin, from Curcuma longa shows a wide spectrum of biological activities which include anticancerous, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antidiabetic, antistress, hepatoprotective and gastroprotective effects. Curcumin in 0.5 and 1 % doses were given as feed additive to Oreochromis mossambicus for 35 days. After feeding trial, activities of digestive enzymes such as α-amylase, protease and lipase were analysed. There was a significant increase in the activities of α-amylase, protease and lipase with 0.5 and 1 % curcumin supplementation in feed. Real-time quantification of GH in brain, and IGF-1 and IGF-2 genes in muscle revealed that curcumin significantly increased the expression of these genes. This is the first study to report that curcumin supplementation at concentrations of 0.5 and 1 % in the feed improved the activities of digestive enzymes and also modulates the expression of GH in brain and growth factors such as IGF-1 and IGF-2 in muscle of O. mossambicus. 相似文献

Drought tolerance was investigated in ‘C306’, one of the most drought tolerant wheat cultivars bred in India in the 1960’s. An intervarietal mapping population of recombinant inbred lines of the cross ‘C306’ × ‘HUW206’ was evaluated for drought tolerance components, namely potential quantum efficiency of photosystem (PS) II (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll content (Chl), flag leaf temperature (Lt), and grain yield per plant (Gyp) under stress. Three independent experiments were conducted under well-watered and water-stressed conditions in greenhouses and growth chambers at Kansas State University (USA). Five hundred and sixty microsatellite markers covering the entire genome were screened for polymorphism between the parents. A QTL (QLt.ksu-1D) for Lt (low flag leaf temperature under stress) on the short arm of chromosome 1D between markers Xbarc271 and Xgwm337 at LOD 3.5 explained 37% of the phenotypic variation. A QTL for Fv/Fm (QF v /F m .ksu-3B) and Chl (QChl.ksu-3B) controlling quantum efficiency of PS II and chlorophyll content under stress were co-localized on chromosome 3B in the marker interval Xbarc68–Xbarc101 and explained 35–40% of the phenotypic variation for each trait. A QTL (QGyp.ksu-4A) for Gyp on chromosome 4A at a LOD value of 3.2 explained 16.3% of the phenotypic variation. Inconsistent QTLs were observed for Fv/Fm on chromosomes 3A, 6A, 2B, 4B, and 4D; for Chl on 3A, 6A, 2B and 4B; and for Lt on 1A, 3A 6A, 3B and 5B. The identified QTLs give a first glimpse of the genetics of drought tolerance in C306 and need to be validated in field experiments using the marker-phenotype linkages reported here. 相似文献

This study estimated the monetary value of urban forests’ non-priced benefits to tourists. Data collected by a face-to-face self-administered survey of urban tourists in Savannah, Georgia, USA were used to estimate tourists’ willingness to pay (WTP) for urban forests by the contingent valuation method. Individual WTP was found higher among tourists with graduate school education. Results suggested that WTP for urban forests also increased significantly with income and destination loyalty of the tourists. Estimated mean and median WTP values were $11.25 (95% confidence interval: $7.34, $15.16) and $2.10 (95% confidence interval: $1.38, $2.82), respectively. Based on the estimated mean WTP, annual value of urban forests to tourists in Savanna in 2009 ranged from a minimum of $81 million to a maximum of $167 million with a 95% confidence interval. The annual value was $11.55 million (95% confidence interval: $7.59 million, $15.51 million) based on the estimated median WTP and assuming at least 50% of the tourists in Savannah would pay the median amount. As the mean was greatly influenced by extreme WTP values in the data, the annual value based on the median value was a more conservative estimate. 相似文献

Spatio-temporal assessment of the above ground biomass (AGB) is a cumbersome task due to the difficulties associated with the measurement of different tree parameters such as girth at breast height and height of trees. The present research was conducted in the campus of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, India, which is predominantly covered by Sal (Shorea robusta C. F. Gaertn). Two methods of regression analysis was employed to determine the potential of remote sensing parameters with the AGB measured in the field such as linear regression analysis between the AGB and the individual bands, principal components (PCs) of the bands, vegetation indices (VI), and the PCs of the VIs respectively and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis between the AGB and all the variables in each category of data. From the linear regression analysis, it was found that only the NDVI exhibited regression coefficient value above 0.80 with the remaining parameters showing very low values. On the other hand, the MLR based analysis revealed significantly improved results as evidenced by the occurrence of very high correlation coefficient values of greater than 0.90 determined between the computed AGB from the MLR equations and field-estimated AGB thereby ascertaining their superiority in providing reliable estimates of AGB. The highest correlation coefficient of 0.99 is found with the MLR involving PCs of VIs. 相似文献
