Habitat models are used to correct estimates of fish abundance derived from pelagic longline fishing gear. They combine information on hook depth with the species’ preferences for ambient environmental conditions to adjust the gear's catchability. We compare depth distributions of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) catch predicted by a habitat model with distributions derived from data collected by observers on longliners in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Our analyses show that the habitat model does not accurately predict the depth distribution of bigeye tuna; its predictions are worse than those from models that assume no effect of depth on catches. Statistical models provided superior fits to the observed depth distribution. The poor performance of the habitat model is probably due to (1) problems in estimating hook depth, (2) fine‐scale variations in environmental conditions, (3) incomplete knowledge of habitat preferences and (4) differences between the distribution of bigeye tuna and their vulnerability to longline gear.  相似文献

We examine the hypothesis that recruitment is more variable in populations on isolated offshore banks than nearby shelf populations. Recruitment of cod (Gadus morhua) and American plaice (Hippoghssoides plates-soides) on Flemish Cap is more variable than in any comparable population. Recruitment of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) on Rockall Bank is also more variable than in surrounding populations. These results are confirmed both by estimates obtained by virtual population analysis and by research surveys. Recruitment of haddock and herring (Clupea harengus) on Georges Bank is also more variable than in surrounding populations; however, the results for two other groundfish populations, cod and yellowtake flounder (Limanda ferruginae), on Georges Bank are ambiguous. We conclude that marine fish populations on isolated banks are more variable than those on nearby shelf regions.  相似文献

Among the puzzling aspects of the recently described autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) of sheep (Johnstone et al 2005 Johnstone, AC, Davidson, BI, Roe, AR, Eccles, MR and Jolly, RD. 2005. Congenital polycystic kidney disease in lambs. New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 53: 307314. [Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) is the multiplicity of organ systems affected and the phenotypic variations that occur between the various animal species. It has been shown in studies of other inherited polycystic kidney disease syndromes that the normal gene products of a mutant are likely to be involved in ciliary structure and function. The studies that have led to this recognition can be expected to eventually provide the basis for a better understanding of the functioning of this organelle, and the pathogenesis of lesions in the related diseases.

It is well known that cilia are important in the perception of light, olfactory stimuli and sound and that motile cilia provide cell motility (e.g. sperm) and transport of mucus and other fluids. Recent research has indicated that the involvement of the primary cili-um/basal body complex is of central importance in the detection and cellular response to extracellular movement of fluid, critical phases of embryonic development, cell cycle regulation and maintenance of cell polarity.

Confocal microscopic studies of renal cyst epithelium in ovine ARPKD have shown that only 30% of cells have a cilium and that these are often truncated (McGlashan et al 2005 McGlashan, SR, Poole, CA, Stayner, C, Johnstone, AC, Eccles, MR and Jensen, CG. 2005. “Primary cilia in fibrosis associated with two models of polycystic kidney disease”. Summary. Solanum ptycanthum (Dun.) vegetative and reproductive growth was evaluated under shade and in the field with soybean interference. In full sunlight without soybean interference, a S. ptycanthum plant produced 243 g shoots and 5957 berries in 20 weeks, but only 38 g and 576 berries in 11 weeks. Plants grown in 94% shade produced 3 g of shoots and 23 berries in 20 weeks, and 1 g and 1 berry in 11 weeks. S. ptycanthum plants that emerged with the soybeans and were positioned between 75-cm rows produced 43 g shoots and 264 berries, whereas plants positioned in 75-cm rows and emerging 6 weeks after the soybeans produced 1 g and 16 berries. When grown between 37·5-cm rows for the same period of time this weed produced 12 g and 2 berries plant−1; plants positioned in 37·5-cm rows produced shoots less than 1 g in weight and one berry plant−1. Shoot growth and berry production of S. ptycanthum increased from 80 to 200% in a 2-week period between the initiation of soybean leaf abscission and maturity. In a season about 50 000 seeds weed−1 were produced in full sunlight; 20 000 or less were produced under soybean interference. When grown in irradiance levels from full sunlight to 94% shade, viable seeds were first detected 10 days after anthesis and essentially all seeds in the berry were viable 24 days after anthesis  相似文献

In model terrestrial ecosystems maintained for three plant generations at elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, increases in photosynthetically fixed carbon were allocated below ground, raising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in soil. These effects were then transmitted up the decomposer food chain. Soil microbial biomass was unaffected, but the composition of soil fungal species changed, with increases in rates of cellulose decomposition. There were also changes in the abundance and species composition of Collembola, fungal-feeding arthropods. These results have implications for long-term feedback processes in soil ecosystems that are subject to rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.  相似文献

The subcrustal lithosphere underlying the southern Archean Churchill Province (ACP) in western Canada is at least one order of magnitude more electrically conductive than the lithosphere beneath adjacent Paleoproterozoic crust. The measured electrical properties of the lithosphere underlying most of the Paleoproterozoic crust can be explained by the conductivity of olivine. Mantle xenolith and geological mapping evidence indicate that the lithosphere beneath the southern ACP was substantially modified as a result of being trapped between two nearly synchronous Paleoproterozoic subduction zones. Tectonically induced metasomatism thus may have enhanced the subcrustal lithosphere conductivity of the southern ACP.  相似文献
