Earthworms Allolobophora chlorotica and Aporrectodea longa were inoculated into Calvert landfill site in spring 1992, in conjunction with the planting of two tree species Alnus glutinosa and Acer pseudoplatanus. Monitoring has taken place over a period of 11 years. Sampling in 2003 revealed that earthworm distribution no longer equated to the inoculation treatments; the worms had spread extensively. The presence of A. glutinosa had a significant effect (p<0ċ01) on earthworm number (mean density 198 m−2) and biomass (34 g m−2) compared to plots where A. pseudoplatanus had been planted and subsequently died (mean density 118 m−2; biomass 21 g m−2). Results suggest that tree presence may be critical to earthworm community development. In 2002, the spread of A. chlorotica from the original points of inoculation had reached 60 m with the highest recorded population density at 108 m−2 with a mass of 18ċ6 g m−2. A. longa was recorded at a distance of 132 m from the nearest point of inoculation with the highest recorded population density at 70 m−2 with a mass of 49ċ3 g m−2, 10 m from the original inoculation grid. Other species recorded (and % of total) were Aporrectodea rosea (0ċ9) Lumbricus castaneus (7ċ4), Eiseniella tetraedra (21ċ5) and Lumbricus rubellus (4ċ5). The two inoculated species, A. chlorotica (40ċ4) and A. longa (25ċ3), accounted for two thirds of the earthworms found on site. The highest earthworm community density was 213 m−2 with a mass of 73ċ9 g m−2 at 10 m from original point of inoculation. In 1999, treatments of surface organic matter (OM), in the form of composted green waste, and rotavation were applied to non‐replicated plots of 50 m2 with the effects on earthworm distribution and abundance recorded in 2002. Addition of OM alone led to an increase in number and mass (331 m−2; 95 g m−2) compared to the control (233 m−2; 51 g m−2), while rotavation alone (111 m−2; 36 g m−2) had a detrimental effect over the given time period. This long‐term monitoring programme has demonstrated the development of sustainable earthworm communities on a landfill site. Natural nutrient accumulation and addition of OM on or into the soil‐forming material appeared to assist this process. Bioavailability of metals to aquatic plants is dependent on many factors including ambient metal concentration, pH of soil or water, concentration of ligands, competition with other metals for binding sites, and mode of exposure. Plants may be exposed to metals through water, air, or soil, depending on growth form. This paper examines the influence of soil type under two regimens of water acidification on metal uptake by four species of aquatic macrophytes: smartweed (Polygonum sagittatum), burreed (Sparganium americanum), pondweed (Potamogeton diversifolius), and bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) in constructed, experimentally acidified wetlands. Soil types consisted of a comparatively high-metal clay or a lower-metal sandy loam. Each pond was either acidified to pH ca. 4.8–5.3 or allowed to remain circumneutral. Metal concentrations tended to be higher in the submerged bladderwort and pondweed than in the emergent burreed and smartweed. Soils were important to plant metal concentrations in all species, but especially in the emergents. Acidification influenced plant concentrations of some metals and was especially important in the submerged pondweed. Bioaccumulation of metals occurred for Mn, B, Sr, Ba, and Zn, compared to soil concentrations.  相似文献

In model terrestrial ecosystems maintained for three plant generations at elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, increases in photosynthetically fixed carbon were allocated below ground, raising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in soil. These effects were then transmitted up the decomposer food chain. Soil microbial biomass was unaffected, but the composition of soil fungal species changed, with increases in rates of cellulose decomposition. There were also changes in the abundance and species composition of Collembola, fungal-feeding arthropods. These results have implications for long-term feedback processes in soil ecosystems that are subject to rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.  相似文献

Lateral force microscopy in the wearless regime was used to study the friction behavior of a lipid monolayer on mica. In the monolayer, condensed domains with long-range orientational order of the lipid molecules were present. The domains revealed unexpectedly strong friction anisotropies and non-negligible friction asymmetries. The angular dependency of these effects correlated well with the tilt direction of the alkyl chains of the monolayer, as determined by electron diffraction and Brewster angle microscopy. The molecular tilt causing these frictional effects was less than 15 degrees, demonstrating that even small molecular tilts can make a major contribution to friction.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 72 Targhee lambs (initial BW 22.1+/-.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of energy source (alfalfa pasture vs limit-fed, all-concentrate) and ionophore addition on performance, visceral organ mass, and carcass characteristics. There were no differences (P > . 10) in ADG or gain/ feed due to ionophore supplementation. Lambs that grazed alfalfa had greater (P < .05) liver, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, cecum, and large intestine weights than did lambs fed the concentrate diet. Lambs fed the concentrate diet had greater (P < .01) hot carcass weights, larger (P < .01) loin eye areas, and greater (P < .001) dressing percentages than lambs that grazed alfalfa. In Exp. 2, lambs offered the concentrate diet had greater (P < .001) DM and OM digestibilities than lambs offered alfalfa (89.5 and 91.1 vs 72.4 and 74.2%, respectively). Apparent and true N digestibilities were greater (P < .001) for the concentrate diet than for alfalfa (90.9 and 101.7 vs 77.7 and 91.9%, respectively). Likewise, grams of N retained per day were twice as great (P < .001) with the concentrate diet than with alfalfa (14.9 vs 6.0 g/ d). The greater visceral organ mass and resulting increases in energy and protein requirements in lambs that grazed alfalfa were probably responsible for the lesser hot carcass weight and dressing percentage compared with lambs fed 100% concentrate.  相似文献

The microbial population of a Brown Chernozemic soil was labelled in situ by adding 14C-glucose and 15NH415NO3 to the plow layer. The loss of 14C, nitrogen immobilization-mineralization reactions, bacterial numbers (plate count, direct count) and fungal hyphal lengths were determined periodically throughout the growing period in amended and unamended microplots and in the surrounding field soil. After 5 days, 90 per cent of the labelled N occurred in the organic form with little subsequent mineralization. Of the labelled C added, 63, 56 and 39 per cent, remained in the soil after 3, 14 and 104 days, respectively.The ratio of fungal C to bacterial C increased as soil moisture decreased. Viable (plate count) and total numbers of bacteria in samples from unamended plots and field soil were significantly correlated with each other and with soil moisture. Fungal hyphal lengths from amended soil were also significantly related to moisture but the rate of loss of 14C and mineralization of 15N were not. The synthesized microbial material (tissue and metabolites) exhibited a high degree of stability throughout the study. The half-life of labelled C remaining in the soil after 30 days was calculated to be 6 months compared to only 4 days for the added glucose C. The amount of energy used for maintenance by the soil population under field conditions was calculated from measurements of biomass C, respired labelled C and respired soil C.  相似文献

The growth of five typical but phenetically distinct cocci and Arthrobacter strains, isolated from a pine forest soil, has been investigated. Soil reaction was found to have a marked effect on growth and unless naturally acidic soils were made more alkaline they did not support growth, even in the presence of added nutrients. However, in the presence of fungi which could use the added nutrients, e.g. chitin, mycelial fragments etc., bacterial growth was possible and could be correlated with a decrease in acidity, especially around particles of organic matter. Where the pH rose above 7.9, bacterial growth again decreased. All the bacterial strains tested reacted in the same way, suggesting that they occupied similar microenvironments in both the acidic and alkaline soil horizons examined. Some explanations for the occurrence of nonsporing bacteria in soils in which apparently they cannot grow are suggested.  相似文献
