BACKGROUND: A major problem of crop protection in Crete, Greece, is the control of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) with chemical insecticides owing to the rapid development of resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the establishment of resistance and the underlying mechanisms to major insecticide classes with classical bioassays and known biochemical resistance markers. RESULTS: During a 2005–2007 survey, 53 Q biotype populations were collected. Application history records showed extensive use of neonicotinoids, organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids. High resistance levels were identified in the majority of populations (>80%) for imidacloprid (RF: 38–1958×) and α‐cypermethrin (RF: 30–600×). Low resistance levels (RF < 12) were observed for pirimiphos‐methyl. A strong correlation between resistance to imidacloprid and the number of applications with neonicotinoids was observed. Significant correlations were observed between COE and P450‐dependent monoxygenase activity with resistance to α‐cypermethrin and imidacloprid respectively. A propoxur‐based AChE diagnostic test indicated that iAChE was widespread in most populations. Resistance levels for α‐cypermethrin were increased when compared with a previous survey (2002–2003). Differentiation of LC50 values between localities was observed for imidacloprid only. CONCLUSION: Bemisia tabaci resistance evolved differently in each of the three insecticides studied. Imidacloprid resistance seems less established and less persistent than α‐cypermethrin resistance. Applied methods for larval rearing suffer from the difficulty of accurately predicting larvae quantitative feeding requirements for optimum growth. Even when known, requirements change according to the behavior of each population reared. Computer based feeding systems require tools for adapting the delivered amounts of food to the needs of the reared population. In this work the daily feeding requirements of sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae were estimated, and based on these estimations a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for feeding was designed and developed. Sea bream larvae were reared, in triplicate, under intensive conditions in a pilot scale rearing system for 20 days with the pseudo-green water method. Larvae reached 6.7±0.6 mm (mean value and S.D.) at the end of the experimental period while the mean survival of the populations was 48.0±12.6%. Consumption was 0.017±0.009 mg of carbon per individual at first feeding and increased to 0.198±0.032 mg at day 20 post-hatching. The findings were used for the development of a FLC for feeding that adapts the amount of food delivered to the larvae according to changes in the reared population. The FLC utilizes five linguistic variables describing the state of the population and a rule base composed of 316 rules. The developed FLC allows the use of computer based feeding systems during rearing of early larval stages.  相似文献

Chronic discharge of surplus organic matter is a typical side effect of fish aquaculture, occasionally leading to coastal eutrophication and excessive phytoplankton growth. Owing to their innate filter-feeding capacity, marine sponges could mitigate environmental impact under integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) scenarios. Herein, we investigated the clearance capacity of four ubiquitous Mediterranean sponges (Agelas oroides, Axinella cannabina, Chondrosia reniformis and Sarcotragus foetidus) against three microalgal substrates with different size/motility characteristics: the nanophytoplankton Nannochloropsis sp. (~3.2 μm, nonmotile) and Isochrysis sp. (~3.8 μm, motile), as well as the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (~21.7 μm, nonmotile). In vitro cleaning experiments were conducted using sponge explants in 1 L of natural seawater and applying different microalgal cell concentrations under light/dark conditions. The investigated sponges exhibited a wide range of retention efficiencies for the different phytoplankton cells, with the lowest average values found for A. cannabina (37%) and the highest for A. oroides (70%). The latter could filter up to 14.1 mL seawater per hour and gram of sponge wet weight, by retaining 100% of Isochrysis at a density of 105 cells mL−1, under darkness. Our results highlight differences in filtering capacity among sponge species and preferences for microalgal substrates with distinct size and motility traits.  相似文献

A field experiment was carried out in a fish farm of the Eastern Mediterranean in order to evaluate the benthic environmental footprint of the organic versus the conventional fish farming. The highest values of chl α were recorded at the conventional culture during both studied seasons. The organic matter and organic carbon rates recorded at the conventional culture were significantly higher than those observed at the organic culture in both studied seasons (p < .05). Furthermore, in all cases the quality characteristics of benthic community variables were optimum at the organic culture compared to the conventional one and similar to those of the control. SIMPER analysis showed that the maximum average dissimilarity occurred between organic and conventional culture, while the main contributor species for this dissimilarity was the polychaete Capitella capitata. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) ordination plot indicated clearly a separation of the organic and conventional fish farming during both studied seasons. K‐dominance curves revealed a clear difference in elevation, mainly during summer. M‐AMBI index showed a poor to moderate environment for conventional culture, while organic one was good to high and similar to the control site (high). The results indicated the lower environmental footprint of the organic fish farming compared to the conventional, demonstrating its potential as an important management tool, which could play a significant ecological role for the sustainability of aquaculture in the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

The resistance levels to alpha-cypermethrin, bifenthrin, pirimiphos-methyl, endosulfan and imidacloprid were determined in Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) from Crete. Five B tabaci populations collected from greenhouse and outdoor crops were bioassayed and compared with a reference susceptible strain. Bemisia tabaci collected in a floriculture greenhouse exhibited the highest resistance against all insecticides: at LC50, resistance factors were 23-fold for bifenthrin, 80-fold for alpha-cypermethrin, 18-fold for pirimiphos-methyl, 58-fold for endosulfan and 730-fold for imidacloprid. A population collected on outdoor melons was more susceptible than the reference strain against all insecticides tested, suggesting the occurrence of local highly susceptible B tabaci populations in 'refugia'. In pairwise comparisons of resistance levels, correlation was observed between the LC50 values of the pyrethroid insecticides bifenthrin and alpha-cypermethrin.  相似文献

Pagrus pagrus is one of the promising species for the industry in the Mediterranean but its rearing is still far from satisfactory. In the present work, the conditions and results of larval rearing with the use of an automatic feeding system are presented. Eight populations were reared for 20 days with the pseudo green water methodology in two successive trials. Larvae were fed enriched rotifers during the entire rearing period, a mixed diet of rotifers and Artemia (Instar I when larvae reached 5 mm in length, replaced by Instar II after larvae reached 5.5 mm) and a formulated diet (after day 16 post hatching). A computerized system for feeding management was used. A total of 388,000 eggs were incubated and after 20 days, 237,973 larvae (TL = 6.96 ± 0.17 mm) were produced with a survival rate of 61.4 ± 6.3%. Individuals grew in terms of wet weight with an exponential rate of 0.167 ± 0.008 daily (R 2= 0.983) with no variations between replicates. Mean individual daily consumption at first feeding (day 4-post hatching), was 0.20 ± 0.06 mg of food (0.03 ± 0.01 dry weight), that is, 180–300 rotifers, while on day 20, consumption increased by 10 (2.081 ± 0.106 mg and 0.276 ± 0.014 in wet and dry weight, respectively). When compared with sea bream, consumption was higher by approximately 3–4-fold. The mean food conversion ratio of the experimental period was 4. In comparison with sea bream larviculture, food consumption of red porgy is higher, and a different feeding strategy is required to satisfy the requirements of the larvae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Brown meagre Sciaena umbra Linnaeus 1758 is a demersal species living at depths of 0–200 m with a wide distribution in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean. It exhibits nocturnal behavior and occupies bottom caves and seabeds covered with vegetation. This study presents the first data on brown meagre growth under culture conditions and contributes some basic information on its dietary protein requirement by feeding isoenergetic diets with different protein–lipid ratios by means of self-feeders. Fish with 78.8 ± 15.8 g (mean ± standard deviation) body weight were divided into four groups and subjected to four different feeding regimes with three replications for 77 days. In the first group, fish were supplied with a high protein and low fat diet (HPLF, 52 : 8 w/w fat–protein ratio), the second one a medium protein and medium fat diet (MPMF, 42 : 14), the third with a low protein and high fat diet (LPHF, 31 : 23). In the fourth group, fish had access to both HPLF and LPHF diets. Fish fed on HPLF and MPMF diets showed significantly better growth and feed conversion ratios than fish fed on the LPHF diet. Fish with access to HPLF and LPHF diets exhibited comparable growth to the HPLF group but their feed conversion ratio was significantly higher. The condition factor and hepatosomatic index revealed no significant differences between dietary regimes. The liver of brown meagre may serve as a depository organ for energy, judging from its relatively high lipid content (39–43%).  相似文献

Twenty-five landraces of the cherry-like tomato named Corbarino, a typical niche product grown in the Sarno valley of the Campania region, have been characterized. The landraces used have been compared to eight cultivars widely spread in the same area of cultivation. The genetic diversity within and between landraces was evaluated through the comparison of DNA fingerprints obtained with (GATA)(4) probe hybridized to TaqI digested genomic DNA. Twenty-two of the Corbarino landraces were homogeneous and were unequivocally characterized by their DNA fingerprints. The others are probably "population varieties" in that within each of them polymorphic DNA fragments were identified. According to the characterization of fruit shapes, four groups were identified. One landrace from each group, harvested at the same ripening degree, was further characterized for yield, fruit quality components, antioxidant activities, and carotenoid contents and compared to Faino F(1) and Tomito F(1) hybrids. The Corbarino landraces were all characterized by high yield, a high level of carbohydrates, and high levels of soluble and total solids. Interestingly, the biotype named ISCI 05 was the most suitable for canning. Landraces ISCI 07 and ISCI 05 gave the highest value of antioxidant activities and carotenoid content. These data, together with previously published results, suggested that ISCI 05 should be proposed for the institution of a Label of Origin.  相似文献

The effects of organic versus conventional crop management practices (crop rotation, crop protection, and fertility management strategies) on wheat yields and grain metal (Al, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were investigated in a long-term field trial. The interactions between crop management practices and the season that the crop was grown were investigated using univariate and redundancy analysis approaches. Grain yields were highest where conventional fertility management and crop protection practices were used, but growing wheat after a previous crop of grass/clover was shown to partially compensate for yield reductions due to the use of organic fertility management. All metals except for Pb were significantly affected by crop management practices and the year that the wheat was grown. Grain Cd and Cu levels were higher on average when conventional fertility management practices were used. Al and Cu were higher on average when conventional crop protection practices were used. The results demonstrate that there is potential to manage metal concentrations in the diet by adopting specific crop management practices shown to affect crop uptake of metals.  相似文献

Disinfectants and fertilisers exert strong impact on soil processes by affecting the structure and the activity of the soil microbial community. Most relevant studies examined these impacts independently, under laboratory conditions and without crop cover. In this study, we have monitored the response of soil chemical, microbial, and biochemical properties to disinfectant and fertiliser treatments in field plots cultivated with beans. The measured properties comprised microbial C and N, asparaginase, gultaminase, urease, and acid phosphomonoesterase activities and contents of organic N, organic C, inorganic N, and inorganic P. We ran four different treatments using different combinations of chemical (metham sodium) and biological disinfectant (a mixture of neem cake and essential oils) and fertilisers (NPK 8-16-24 and cow manure) in plots cultivated with shell beans, while the control soil was neither treated nor cropped with beans. The data were expressed as percentage (%RC) in relation to the control values. The disinfectant and fertiliser treatments had less impact on soil properties compared to bean crop growth (except for microbial C and N, and content of organic C). In comparison to the control, higher activities of urease and asparaginase and content of inorganic N were recorded in bean cropped plots at the stage of seedlings (June), while higher activities of acid phosphomonoesterase and glutaminase and content of organic N were recorded at the stage of plant flowering (August). In October, the values of all properties were higher in the control plots compared to the treated plots. The joint effect of disinfectants x fertilisers affected the response of content of organic C and N and extractable P and glutaminase activity. The %RC of the properties exhibited more negative values in plots treated with chemical disinfectant and chemical fertiliser than in the other treatments. We suggested that the response of soil properties to disinfectants and fertilisers were influenced by the growth of P. vulgaris.  相似文献
