Abstract— Two bacterial strains, rich in either eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA, 20:5(n-3)] ( Shewanella gel-idimarina ACAM 456) or docosahexaenoic acid [DHA, 22:6(n-3)] ( Colwellia psychroeryrhrus ACAM 605) were tested for their ability to enrich rotifers Erachionus plicatilis in these polyunsaturated fatty acids. Rotifers were exposed for 24 h to each bacterial strain and to a mixture of the two strains. They were then harvested and their fatty acid compositions were analysed and compared to those of rotifers that had been either starved or fed yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae or microalgae Tetraselmis suecica in 2-L glass flasks. Exposure to 1.4 × 109 cells/ml of the EPA-producing bacterium only resulted in rotifer EPA levels increasing from 0.1% to 1.2% of total dry weight (%dw). Similarly, following exposure to 1.0 × 109 cells/mL of the DHA-producing bacterium only, rotifer DHA levels increased from below detection to 0.1% dw. When exposed to a mixture of the two bacterial strains, containing 7.0 × 108 celldml of the EPA producer and 5.0 × 108 cells/mL of the DHA producer, the rotifers'final EPA and DHA levels were 0.5% dw and 0.3% dw respectively. Although feeding strategies need refining, these results show, for the first time, that rotifers can be enriched with DHA from bacteria, and that rotifers can be enriched simultaneously with both DHA and EPA from different bacterial strains. 相似文献

The EU Plant Protection Product Directive 91/414/EEC recommends the EPPO/CoE Arthropod Natural Enemies Risk Assessment Scheme for guidance on how to conduct risk assessments for terrestrial non-target arthropods. This scheme is currently in the process of being revised by EPPO/ CoE. A major change will be the recommendation for the generation and use of ’Dose Response’ toxicity data instead of limit test data. In addition, the revised EPPO/CoE Non-target Arthropods Risk Assessment Scheme will replace the current arbitrary 30% threshold trigger value applied to limit test data, with a Hazard Quotient (HQ; = Ratio Application Rate/LC50 on Glass)), comparable to the successful approach adopted in the EPPO/CoE ’Honeybee Risk Assessment Scheme’. However, in order for this new approach to be implemented under 91/414/EEC, an appropriate regulatory HQ trigger value needs to be derived. Such an HQ trigger value has been established by calculating HQ values for the 2 recommended sensitive indicator species (T pyri andAphidius) for a wide range of products and validating opposite robust semi-field/field data. This validation indicated that an HQ trigger value of ≥ 12 forT pyri and ≥ 8 forAphidius spp., should be used to trigger higher-tier risk assessment and/or higher-tier testing for non-target arthropods. As these trigger values were validated with realistic semi-field/ field data they apply for both lethal and sub-lethal effects as well as single and multiple application scenarios. Due to the worst case assumptions used in this HQ validation analysis, no further uncertainty factors need to be applied for in-crop risk assessment. Whilst a small amount of uncertainty exists regarding the comparative sensitivity ofT pyri andAphidius spp. for off-crop non-target arthropod guilds of arthropods, this is balanced by the fact that the off-crop exposure assessment used in the HQ derivation, is at least an order of magnitude higher than that realistically likely in the field. This HQ approach and trigger value is an appropriate and conservative tool for tier 1 risk assessment, which should reduce the number of false positive results leading to unnecessary higher-tier testing. 相似文献

We used a coupled physical–biological model to examine potential distances between hatching and settlement locations for lobsters in the Gulf of Maine. The physical model is based on a finite-element mesh and climatological averages of the seasonally evolving temperature and density fields. Larval trajectories from coastal and offshore hatching sites (21–224 m deep) were calculated for early, middle and late-season hatching by coupling temperature-dependent development rates and depth (the biological model) to the circulation. Model results showed large spatial differences in larval development times (from 18 to 38 days) and distances transported (19–280 km) for the early hatch. Development time and transport decreased markedly by mid-season at most sites, but strong spatial differences persisted. The eastern Maine coast appears to experience stronger removal and less resupply of larvae than other regions, consistent with observed lower recruitment. Inverse solutions of the model for larvae arriving in mid-coastal Maine indicate that they originate from a broad section of the eastern coast 'upstream', with those nearest the shoreline generally travelling the shortest distances. The postlarval stage is neustonic (living near the surface), and a simple inverse model demonstrates that a diurnal coastal sea breeze can contribute substantially to inshore movement during this final planktonic stage. A sample of an Argentinean landrace of wheat showed considerable variation in most of the evaluated morphological and agronomic characters. The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the ability of charcoal-extracted bovine follicular fluid (bFF) to suppress endogenous follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) at various stages of the estrous cycle and 2) the effects of suppression of FSH on luteal function and lengths of the current and subsequent estrous cycles. Twenty-six mature ewes were assigned randomly to receive 5 ml of either bFF or saline, subcutaneously, at 8-h intervals on d 1 through 5 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 3), d 6 through 10 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 3) or d 11 through 15 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 2) of the estrous cycle (d 0 = estrus). Blood was collected daily beginning at estrus and continued until the third estrus (two estrous cycles) or 40 d; more frequent samples were collected 2 h prior to initiation of treatment (0600), hourly for the first 8 h of treatment, then every 4 h until 0800 on the first day after treatment, and finally at 1600 and 2400 on that day. Plasma concentrations of FSH were lower (P less than .001) in bFF-treated than in saline-treated ewes. Treatment with bFF reduced (P less than .05) plasma concentrations of progesterone during the current but not during the subsequent estrous cycle. Treatment with bFF did not affect plasma concentrations of estradiol-17 beta. Administration of bFF on d 11 through 15 of the estrous cycle lengthened the interval from the decline in progesterone to estrus and the inter-estrous interval by approximately 3 and 4 d, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献
