ObjectiveTo investigate intravenous (IV) propofol given by intermittent boluses or by continuous rate infusion (CRI) for anaesthesia in swans.Study designProspective randomized clinical study.AnimalsTwenty mute swans (Cygnus olor) (eight immature and 12 adults) of unknown sex undergoing painless diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.MethodsInduction of anaesthesia was with 8 mg kg?1 propofol IV. To maintain anaesthesia, ten birds (group BOLI) received propofol as boluses, whilst 10 (group CRI) received propofol as a CRI. Some physiological parameters were measured. Anaesthetic duration was 35 minutes. Groups were compared using Mann–Whitney U-test. Results are median (range).ResultsAnaesthetic induction was smooth and tracheal intubation was achieved easily in all birds. Bolus dose in group BOLI was 2.9 (1.3–4.3) mg kg?1; interval between and number of boluses required were 4 (1–8) minutes and 6 (4–11) boluses respectively. Total dose of propofol was 19 (12.3–37.1) mg kg?1. Awakening between boluses was very abrupt. In group CRI, propofol infusion rate was 0.85 (0.8–0.9) mg kg?1 minute?1, and anaesthesia was stable. Body temperature, heart and respiratory rates, oxygen saturation (by pulse oximeter) and reflexes did not differ between groups. Oxygen saturations (from pulse oximeter readings) were low in some birds. Following anaesthesia, all birds recovered within 40 minutes. In 55 % of all, transient signs of central nervous system excitement occurred during recovery.Conclusions and clinical relevance8 mg kg?1 propofol appears an adequate induction dose for mute swans. For maintenance, a CRI of 0.85 mg kg?1 minute?1 produced stable anaesthesia suitable for painless clinical procedures. In contrast bolus administration, was unsatisfactory as birds awoke very suddenly, and the short intervals between bolus requirements hampered clinical procedures. Administration of additional oxygen throughout anaesthesia might reduce the incidence of low arterial haemoglobin saturation.  相似文献

The results of the Women's Health Initiative, a study anticipated to provide definitive answers about health benefits and risks of postmenopausal hormone therapy, have generated debate and confusion among clinicians, researchers, and the lay public. The ovarian hormones estrogen and progesterone, which decline at menopause, normally elicit complex tissue-specific responses throughout the body. Major advances are providing a detailed molecular definition of how that differential action is achieved. Here we review estrogen and progestin actions, discuss how effectively knowledge of steroid hormone endocrinology has been incorporated into clinical studies, and consider the impact on modern hormone therapy protocols and pharmaceutical development.  相似文献

Data pertaining to the transport of fluvial sediment sampled in detail during a five hour long event in a small upland stream channel in the extremely arid Southern Negev are presented. Considerations based on comparative evaluations of water discharge, stream power, total and fractional sediment concentration, and total and fractional sediment discharge suggest that bedload transport in channels of even very small upland catchments practically devoid of continuous alluvial cover takes place in waves, which are not a priori related to any water discharge characteristic, but rather reflect some intrinsic feature of watershed dynamics, such as slope-channel topographic contrasts or fluvial bifurcation. The regular spacing of pools and riffles and of gravel bars in the more alluvial reaches downstream may therefore be initiated from upstream.  相似文献

A diagnostic ultrasound unit with a 5 MHz probe was used to examine ovarian structures in vitro from 32 reproductive tracts obtained at slaughter from young cows. Agreement between and within observers, and between observers and dissection results was evaluated using the kappa statistic. Agreement was high (kappa from 0.531 to 0.969) for all evaluations of corpora lutea. The sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of both positive and negative findings for presence of a corpus luteum was > 0.9. Agreement between and within observers was little better than chance for follicles measuring 4 to < 6 mm and for follicles measuring 6 to < 10 mm. However, agreement between observers and dissection results indicated that observers could detect follicles 4 to < 6 mm and 6 to < 10 mm (kappa 0.301 to 0.731 and 0.414 to 0.612, respectively). Kappa values within and between observers and between observers and dissection results for observations of follicles measuring > or = 10 mm were almost all > 0.4 indicating that large follicles can be readily detected using ultrasound. It is suggested that further validation of ultrasound methods is needed to determine whether follicles measuring < 4 mm can be accurately identified, and whether follicles can be accurately identified and monitored over a number of days. The ultrasound unit was useful for detecting the presence of corpora lutea and follicles. However, agreement between and within observers on the presence of follicles measuring < 10 mm was poor.  相似文献

EVALUATION OF HEAVY METAL REMEDIATION USING MINERAL APATITE   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The current study investigated the sorption and desorption of dissolved lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) from aqueous solutions and a contaminated soil by North Carolina mineral apatite. Aqueous solutions of Pb, Cd, and Zn were reacted with the apatite, followed by desorption experiments under a wide variety of pH conditions ranging from 3 to 12, including the extraction fluids used in the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The sorption results showed that the apatite was very effective in retaining Pb and was moderately effective in attenuating Cd and Zn at pH 4–5. Approximately 100% of the Pb applied was removed from solutions, representing a capacity of 151 mg of Pb/g of apatite, while 49% of Cd and 29% of Zn added were attenuated, with removal capacities of 73 and 41 mg g-1, respectively. The desorption experiments showed that the sorbed Pb stayed intact where only 14–23% and 7–14% of the sorbed Cd and Zn, respectively, were mobilized by the TCLP solutions. The apatite was also effective in removing dissolved Pb, Cd, and Zn leached from the contaminated soil using pH 3–12 solutions by 62.3–99.9, 20–97.9, and 28.6–98.7%, respectively. In particular, the apatite was able to reduce the metal concentrations in the TCLP-extracted soil leachates to below US EPA maximum allowable levels, suggesting that apatite could be used as a cost-effective option to remediating metal-contaminated soils, wastes, and/or water. The sorption mechanisms are variable in the reactions between the apatite and dissolved Pb, Cd, and Zn. The Pb removals primarily resulted from the dissolution of the apatite followed by the precipitation of hydroxyl fluoropyromorphite. Minor otavite precipitation was observed in the interaction of the apatite with aqueous Cd, but other sorption mechanisms, such as surface complexation, ion exchange, and the formation of amorphous solids, are primarily responsible for the removal of Zn and Cd.  相似文献

ABSTRACT To characterize host genes required for a compatible interaction, we identified a novel recessive Arabidopsis thaliana mutant, nws1 (no wilt symptoms), that failed to develop wilt symptoms in response to virulent strains of the phytopathogenic bacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum. The absence of wilting in nws1 plants was not correlated with a cell death phenotype or a constitutive expression of salicylic acid-, jasmonic acid- or ethylene-associated genes. In addition, this mutation, which conferred a symptomless phenotype in response to all the R. solanacearum strains tested, was highly specific to this pathogen, because nws1 responses to other plant pathogens, including oomycetes, nematodes, viruses, and other bacteria, were identical to those of wild-type Col-5 plants. Finally, the lack of disease development was shown to be different than RRS1-R-mediated resistance. The identification of mutants such as nws1, that are unable to develop disease, should lead to the isolation of target host factors required for pathogen growth or fitness, or of factors modified by the invading microorganism to avoid or inactivate plant defense mechanisms, and should bring a better understanding of bacterial wilt diseases.  相似文献

Fusarium head blight of wheat is caused by a disease complex comprised of toxigenic pathogens, predominantly Fusarium spp., and a non-toxigenic pathogen Microdochium nivale, which causes symptoms visually indistinguishable from Fusarium and is often included as a causal agent of Fusarium head blight. Four field trials are reported here, including both naturally and artificially inoculated trials in which the effect of fungicide treatments were noted on colonisation by Fusarium and Microdochium, and on the production of deoxynivalenol (DON) mycotoxin. The pathogen populations were analysed with quantitative PCR and samples were tested for the presence of the mycotoxin DON. Application of fungicides to reduce Fusarium head blight gave a differential control of these fungi. Tebuconazole selectively controlled F. culmorum and F. avenaceum and reduced levels of DON, but showed little control of M. nivale. Application of azoxystrobin, however, selectively controlled M. nivale and allowed greater colonisation by toxigenic Fusarium species. This treatment also lead to increased levels of DON detected. nobreak Azoxystrobin application two days post-inoculation increased the production of DON mycotoxin per unit of pathogen in an artificially inoculated field trial. This result indicates the potential risk of increased DON contamination of grain following treatment with azoxystrobin to control head blight in susceptible wheat cultivars. This is the first study to show differential fungicidal control of mixed natural pathogen populations and artificial inoculations in field trials.  相似文献
