Abstract – We characterised microhabitat availability and use by adult and young‐of‐year (YOY) snail darters (Percina tanasi Etnier 1976 ) while snorkelling in the French Broad and Hiwassee rivers, TN, USA. Both age groups of snail darters disproportionately used most microhabitat variables compared to their availability. Snail darters primarily occupied moderately deep, swift water over gravel substrates with little macrophyte coverage and no silt. Univariate comparisons indicated that adult and YOY darters occupied different habitat, but there was no marked differences between principal components analysis plots of multivariate microhabitat use within a river. Although the availability of microhabitat variables differed between the French Broad and Hiwassee rivers, univariate means and multivariate plots illustrated that the habitats used were generally similar by age groups of snail darters between rivers. Because our observations of habitat availability and use were constrained to low flow periods and depths <1 m, the transferability of our results to higher flow periods may be limited. However, the similarity in habitat use between rivers suggests that our results can be applied to low‐normal flow conditions in other streams.     

Evaluation of a Midhumeral Block of the Radial,Ulnar, Musculocutaneous and Median (RUMM Block) Nerves for Analgesia of the Distal Aspect of the Thoracic Limb in Dogs

Objective: To evaluate a technique for midhumeral peripheral nerve blockade in the dog. Study Design: Cadaveric technique development; in vivo placebo‐controlled, prospective crossover study. Animals: Canine cadavers (n=38) and 8 clinically healthy, adult hound dogs. Methods: A technique for peripheral block of the radial, ulnar, musculocutaneous, and median nerves (RUMM block) was evaluated using cadaver limbs. Eight purpose‐bred, research dogs were anesthetized; a RUMM block was performed on each thoracic limb. One limb from each dog randomly received 0.5% bupivacaine and the opposite limb was assigned to receive sterile saline solution as a control. After recovery from anesthesia, skin sensation at selected dermatomes was evaluated for 24 hours using a mechanical stimulus. Weight‐bearing, conscious proprioception, and withdrawal reflex were also evaluated. One month after initial testing, each dog was reanesthetized and each limb received the opposite treatment. Results: Sensory thresholds were significantly increased over baseline measurements when compared with control limbs for all nerves. Complete sensory block was achieved in radial (15/16), ulnar (3/16), musculocutaneous (8/16), and median (11/16) nerves, using a mechanical stimulus of analgesia. Complete simultaneous block of all nerves was only obtained in 1 of 16 limbs. Conclusion: RUMM block resulted in desensitization of the skin in the associated dermatomes for 4–10 hours. Complete sensory block of the dermatomes supplied by the radial nerve was most consistent. Clinical Relevance: RUMM block may be an effective technique to provide adjunctive analgesia for dogs undergoing surgery of the distal aspect of the thoracic limb.

A severe and persistent polyarthritis and synovitis occurred in a group of rising two-year-old Hereford bulls associated with a transient BVD-MD-like infection.     

Two cases of suspected Brucella abortus abortion in mares

Painful foot horn lesions of breeding sows fed rations of low biotin content responded to a biotin supplement, and a herd lameness problem was overcome.     

Transport of ova through the oviduct of merino ewes

Dissection of the heads of 12 male Red deer revealed that the innervation and blood supply of the antler resembles those in the goat, in that the infratrochlear and zygomaticotemporal nerves supply the antler pedicle accompanied by two main branches of the superficial temporal artery and vein. Analgesia of the antler should be produced by injecting local anaesthetic solution both dorsal to the orbital rim and immediately caudal to the zygomatic process of the frontal bone.     

The toxic effect of massive doses of calciferol on dairy cows

Evidence that feeding massive doses, of calciferol prior to calving may be a useful method of preventing milk fever was obtained by Hibbs and co-workers (1950, 1951) at Ohio State University. The treatment causes a rise in serum calcium and if dosing is suitably timed the post-partum fall in serum calcium may be countered, thus making up for the presumed parathyroid failure which occurs at this lime and which is believed by many to be the underlying cause of milk fever.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, I can assure you that I speak with complete sincerity when I say I regard it as a very great honour indeed to be asked to open this conference. I value the invitation to do so for my own sake (today's will be a memory to cherish when I have returned to Britain) and, not less, for the implied compliment to the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom (whose adviser I am) and to the British Ministry of Agriculture who employ me. It is also particularly valuable to me, in my work, to get among a body of people who are so very much part and parcel of the farming industry of the Dominion. And, not least, my wife and I are delighted to be able to spend a weekend in such pleasant surroundings and in such congenial company. This is indeed the art of “conferring” brought to the ultimate degree of luxury!     

Coenurosis in New Zealand

Sir,—During the survey on the cestode problems of food animals and dogs in New Zealand, Multiceps multi-cops (Leske, 1780) and its metacestode Coenurus cerebralis have been observed in the dog and sheep respectively in mid-Canterbury. An unconfirmed case has also been reported recently in a lamb's brain exported to Australia.     

The Influence of Ambient Temperature on the Function of the Nasal Salt Gland and the Composition of Cloacal Fluid in the Penguin Spheniscus Demersus

The lateral nasal (salt-secreting) glands of S. demersus were found to be morphologically and histologically similar to the salt glands of marine birds in general. No significant differences were recorded in the ionic and osmotic composition of nasal and cloacal fluid that was collected at 18ÅC and 28ÅC respectively. The daily intake of 220 g of fish per bird, however, had a significant influence on the diurnal variation of the potassium values of the cloacal fluid. A very low flow-rate and high osmotic concentration of the nasal gland exudate was recorded, indicating the efficiency of the nasal glands as auxiliary osmoregulatory organs.
