Summary The techniques of kriging and trend removal analysis for modeling the strength properties of lumber have been discussed. Using these techniques, the within member compressive strengths of 38 mm × 89 mm 2100f-1.8E and the within member tensile strengths of 38 mm × 89 mm No. 2 spruce-pine-fir lumber have been modeled. The suitability of these techniques to model the strength properties of lumber has been evaluated by comparing the kriged compressive and tensile strength data to baseline experimentally collected compressive strength data and simulated tensile strength data, respectively. Comparisons of the results of statistical analyses of the baseline data and the kriged data show good agreement. The use of kriging and trend removal techniques to generate strength values in simulation studies for finite element analyses of wood structures is judged to be effective. 相似文献

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) plants are widely known for their contribution to the global and regional environment because of their ability to fix CO2. On the other hand, some scientists have doubts about CO2 fixation by kenaf and have misgivings about the effect of kenaf on the ecosystem. We have characterized the structural characteristics
of cell walls of bast fibers, cores, roots, and leaves of kenaf during the maturation of plants and investigated the rate
of photosynthesis. During maturation of the kenaf plant the cellulose (bast fiber 52–59%, core 44–46%) and lignin (bast fiber
9.3–13.2%, core 18.3–23.2%) contents increased significantly. The aromatic composition of the lignin of bast fiber was significantly
different from that of the core lignin and of other plants. The lignin of bast fiber appears similar to pure syringyl lignin.
Fixation of CO2 by kenaf plants and their contribution to the global environment are discussed. A significatly high rate of photosynthesis
of kenaf plants was observed compared to that of woody plants in Japan, but the amount of CO2 fixation depends on the characteristics of the plantation. If the kenaf was planted in high density, about twice as much
CO2 was fixed as was fixed by trees in a tropical rain forest.

Two novel isobenzofuranone derivatives, pseudaboydins A (1) and B (2), along with five known compounds, including (R)-2-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-5-hydroxybenzofuran (3), (R)-2-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-5-methoxybenzofuran (4), 3,3′-dihydroxy-5,5′-dimethyldiphenyl ether (5), 3-(3-methoxy-5-methylphenoxy)-5-methylphenol (6) and (−)-regiolone (7), were isolated from the culture broth of the marine fungus, Pseudallescheria boydii, associated with the starfish, Acanthaster planci. Their structures were elucidated primarily based on NMR and MS data. The absolute configurations of 1–4 were determined by CD spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The cytotoxic and antibacterial activities of 1–4 were evaluated. Pseudaboydin A (1) showed moderate cytotoxic activity against human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line HONE1, human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line SUNE1 and human glandular lung cancer cell line GLC82 with IC50 values of 37.1, 46.5 and 87.2 μM, respectively. 相似文献

A Campylobacter jejuni isolate obtained from a turkey liver, designated C101, and a C. jejuni isolate obtained from the feces of a chicken, designated C111, were used to inoculate their respective hosts. Isolate C101 depressed weight gain by 20% when inoculated into newly hatched poults or 4-day-old poults. It also caused death, hepatic necrosis, and generalized hemorrhages in turkey embryos. The chicken-derived isolate, C111, did not reduce weight gain in newly hatched chicks, but it did induce mortality in chicken embryos. The supernatant of the cultures of both C. jejuni isolates also caused mortality in embryos. 相似文献

Summary A model has been developed for the within member variation of tensile strengths parallel to grain in nominal 38 × 89 mm No. 2 Spruce-Pine-Fir lumber. Tensile strength data from two modulus of elasticity matched groups were considered. Model parameters obtained from data group 1 were used to generate tensile strength profiles of lumber 6.10 m long. Within member tensile strength cumulative probability distributions of the simulated data were evaluated by window analyses. The spatial correlation of the simulated data were evaluated by semivariogram and regression analyses. OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for premature retirement because of tendon injury in a Thoroughbred racehorse population. ANIMALS: 175 Thoroughbred racehorses (cases) at the Hong Kong Jockey Club that were retired from racing because of tendon injury between 1997 and 2004 and for which the last preretirement exercise was at a fast pace were each matched with 3 control horses that were randomly selected from all uninjured horses that had galloped on the same date as that last exercise episode. PROCEDURES: Training data for all horses were examined. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for retirement from racing attributable to tendon injury. Two multivariable conditional logistic regression models were created; each contained 8 explanatory variables. RESULTS: Compared with control horses, case horses were older at the time of import, accumulated more race distance soon after import, were more likely to have had previous official veterinary or ultrasonographic examinations, raced fewer times during their career, and were in training for a longer period and had exercised at a reduced intensity during the 180-day period preceding the last fast-paced work date. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In addition to identification of risk factors for tendon injury among racing Thoroughbreds, results have suggested that resources focused on obtaining accurate training data may be misdirected in the absence of internationally agreed criteria for incident tendon injury among racehorses. Nevertheless, changes in training intensity and findings of previous clinical examinations could be used to identify horses at risk of tendon injury-associated retirement. 相似文献

A hydroxy analog of vitamin D(2), 1alpha-hydroxyvitamin D(2), has been synthesized and tested for biological activity. This vitamin derivative is active in stimulating intestinal calcium transport and bone calcium mobilization in the rat and exhibits antirachitic activity. The measurement sensitivity of the pointing direction of a laser beam is ultimately limited by the quantum nature of light. To reduce this limit, we have experimentally produced a quantum laser pointer, a beam of light whose direction is measured with a precision greater than that possible for a usual laser beam. The laser pointer is generated by combining three different beams in three orthogonal transverse modes, two of them in a squeezed-vacuum state and one in an intense coherent field. The result provides a demonstration of multichannel spatial squeezing, along with its application to the improvement of beam positioning sensitivity and, more generally, to imaging. 相似文献

Carotenoids have potent antioxidant activity as well as therapeutic value, and their formation has been seen to be induced in algae by stress, including high-salt culture conditions. A differential profiling of carotenoids was conducted using a targeted metabolomics approach with accurate mass data generated by liquid chromatography-electrospray-time-of-flight (LC-ESI-TOF) mass spectrometry followed by postacquisition filtering based on isotope patterns and mass defects to detect carotenoids up-regulated in Scenedesmus sp. exposed to high-salt conditions. Algal cultures treated with high concentrations of sodium acetate or sodium chloride were found to cause an increase in various carotenoids. On the basis of differential analysis, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin increased upon salt treatment. Astaxanthin, in its free form and as fatty acid esters, was seen to increase in Scenedesmus sp. using accurate mass MS. A few other carotenoid compounds increased upon salt treatment, including echinenone and adonirubin, involved in the pathway of astaxanthin biosynthesis from β-carotene, as well as isomers of astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. Application of a hydrological model to three Canadian watersheds forms part of a verification package to test its accuracy and portability. Agreement of model results with observed data on hydrograph, groundwater flow and snowpack is reasonably good. The model results are consistent with the observed pH and with many of the episodic events that have occurred in these acidified watersheds. Contrasts have also been made on the different calibrated coefficients at several locations in these watersheds. An attempt to relate them to the geology and soil characteristics at the site has led to realistic estimation of the soil contact times. 相似文献
