Heterosis effects were evaluated as traits of the dam in F2 progeny of F1 dams and F3 and 4 progeny of F2 and 3 dams in three composite populations of beef cattle. Traits included birth weight, birth date, calving difficulty percentage, and survival percentage at birth, 72 h, and weaning for calves with dams of different age classes. Breed effects were evaluated for the nine parental breeds (Red Poll [R], Hereford [H], Angus [A], Limousin [L], Braunvieh [B], Pinzgauer [P], Gelbvieh [G], Simmental [S], and Charolais [C]) that contributed to the three composite populations (MARC I = 1/4 C, 1/4 B, 1/4 L, 1/4 H, 1/8 A; MARC II = 1/4 G, 1/4 S, 1/4 H, 1/4 A; and MARC III = 1/4 R, 1/4 P, 1/4 H, 1/4 A). Among calves with 2-yr-old dams, breed effects were significant for birth weight, birth date, calving difficulty percentage, and survival percentage at birth but not at 72 h and weaning. Calf survival at weaning was lowest for smallest (less than mu - 1.5 sigma) and largest (greater than mu + 1.5 sigma) birth weight classes and did not differ among intermediate birth weight classes. Calves with difficult births with 2-yr-old dams were significantly heavier at birth (39.6 vs 35.4 kg) and had significantly lower survival at 72 h (87.1 vs 92.2%) and at weaning (77.4 vs 85.1%) than calves with 2-yr-old dams that did not experience difficult births. Among calves with dams greater than or equal to 3 yr old and from dams of all ages, breed group effects generally were significant for the traits analyzed. Important breed group effects on dystocia and survival traits were observed independent of breed group effects on birth weight. Effects of heterosis were significant for birth weight for each generation of each composite population and for the mean of the three composite populations. Generally, heterosis effects for calving difficulty percentage were not significant. Effects of heterosis generally were significant for date of birth (earlier) for each composite population and for the mean of the three composite populations. Heterosis effects on survival to weaning percentage generally were positive but generally were not significant. Heterosis retained for birth weight, birth date, and survival percentage in combined F3 and 4 generation progeny of combined F2 and 3 generation dams did not differ (P greater than .05) from expectation based on retained heterozygosity. These results support the hypothesis that heterosis in cattle for these traits is the result of dominance effects of genes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pharmacokinetics of marbofloxacin after single IV and orally administered doses in blue and gold macaws. ANIMALS: 10 healthy blue and gold macaws. PROCEDURES: In a crossover study, marbofloxacin (2.5 mg/kg) was administered orally (via crop gavage) to 5 birds and IV to 5 birds. Blood samples were obtained at 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after marbofloxacin administration. After a 4-week washout period, the study was repeated, with the first 5 birds receiving the dose IV and the second 5 birds receiving the dose orally. Serum marbofloxacin concentrations were quantitated by use of a validated liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry assay. RESULTS: After oral administration, mean +/- SD area under the curve was 7.94 +/- 2.08 microg.h/mL, maximum plasma concentration was 1.08 +/- 0.316 microg/mL, and bioavailability was 90.0 +/- 31%. After IV administration of marbofloxacin, the apparent volume of distribution was 1.3 +/- 0.32 L/kg, plasma clearance was 0.29 +/- 0.078 L/h/kg, area under the curve was 9.41 +/- 2.84 microg.h/mL, and the harmonic mean terminal half-life was 4.3 hours. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Single IV and orally administered doses of marbofloxacin were well tolerated by blue and gold macaws. The orally administered dose was well absorbed. Administration of marbofloxacin at a dosage of 2.5 mg/kg, PO, every 24 hours may be appropriate to control bacterial infections susceptible to marbofloxacin in this species.  相似文献

The effect of a varied K nutrition upon the incorporation of labelled nitrogen (15N) in young sun flower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) 1. The influence of the potassium nutritional status upon the incorporation of labelled nitrogen (15N) into the soluble amino fraction and into the protein fraction was studied with young sun flower plants (Helianthus annuus L.). The plants were cultivated in a solution culture with 3 different nitrogen and 2 different potassium levels. During the last 24 hours of this cultivation the nitrogen of the nutrient solution was labelled by 15N-nitrate in the various treatments. 2. The growth of the plants was affected considerably by the various nutritional treatments. The yield of the plant matter increased with increasing nitrogen supply. This nitrogen effect was enhanced by the better potassium nutrition. 3. The contents of soluble amino compounds in roots and upper plant parts increased with the increasing nitrogen application. This tendency was reduced by the higher potassium supply. The contents of protein nitrogen rose with the nitrogen nutrition. Potassium reduced the content of protein nitrogen in treatments with high growth rates. 4. Related on a single plant the incorporation rate of nitrate nitrogen into the organic matter was higher in plants with a good potassium nutritional status than in plants with a low potassium nutritional status. This effect was especially evident in the treatments with the highest nitrogen supply. Here the nitrate incorporation rate was 5–7 times higher with the higher potassium application. 5. This favorable effect of potassium upon the assimilation of nitrate nitrogen was also evident, if the incorporation rate was not related to a single plant, but on the unit of weight of plant material (fresh matter). Thus with high nitrogen supply the quantity of labelled nitrogen of the amino fraction was about 2 times higher in the plants with a high potassium nutritional status compared with plants of a low potassium nutritional status. In the protein fraction this potassium effect was still more evident. The influence of potassium upon the nitrate nitrogen assimilation was the better the better the plants were supplied with nitrate.  相似文献

This study compared the humoral immune response against the nucleocapsid-(N) protein of canine distemper virus (CDV) of dogs vaccinated with a multivalent vaccine against parvo-, adeno-, and parainfluenza virus and leptospira combined with either the attenuated CDV Onderstepoort strain (n = 15) or an expression plasmid containing the N-gene of CDV (n = 30). The vaccinations were applied intramuscularly three times at 2-week intervals beginning at the age of 6 weeks. None of the pre-immune sera recognized the recombinant N-protein, confirming the lack of maternal antibodies at this age. Immunization with DNA vaccine for CDV resulted in positive serum N-specific IgG response. However, their IgG (and IgA) titres were lower than those of CDV-vaccinated dogs. Likewise, DNA-vaccinated dogs did not show an IgM peak. There was no increase in N-specific serum IgE titres in either group. Serum titres to the other multivalent vaccine components were similar in both groups.  相似文献

Since 2016, annually occurring species-specific die-offs of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) occurred in the Thur River, situated in the Eastern part of Switzerland. These events lead to drastically reduced population densities in the impacted river regions. Clinical signs in brown trout and mortality were restricted to few weeks in August/September. To characterize the syndrome and to find possible causes, from end of March to November 2018, one-year-old brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to water from Thur River, fish were sampled regularly and screened for infectious agents, including viral metagenomics, and pathology was described. Starting approximately four months post-exposure, brown trout showed severe lymphohistiocytic pancarditis and necrotizing and haemorrhagic hepatitis. These lesions were recorded until the end of the experiment in November. Rainbow trout were not affected at any point in time. No infectious agents could be identified so far as cause of disease, especially no viral aetiology. Even if pathogenesis and pathology point in the direction of an infectious agent, a causative relationship could not be confirmed and aetiology remains unclear.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to isolate Toxoplasma gondii and determine the viability of the parasite in fresh semen samples of clinically healthy adult dogs naturally infected. Eleven seropositive dogs with T. gondii IgG antibodies from southern Brazil were selected to confirm the presence and viability of T. gondii in fresh semen samples using in vitro isolation in Vero cell culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing analysis. The presence of viable T. gondii was confirmed by in vitro isolation and PCR in five semen samples. The ITS1 region of the isolated protozoa (TG S4) was amplified and sequenced. The nucleotide sequence obtained was 99% compatible with the T. gondii DNA sequences stored in the GenBank. It has been shown that T. gondii tachyzoites may be isolated in vitro from fresh semen samples of clinically healthy dogs seropositive for T. gondii.  相似文献

Cut-out data from 2,550 steer carcasses representing British, Continental and Zebu breeding were analyzed to evaluate yield grade classes based on three equations: 1) Ya = 2.5 + .984 AFT + .0084 HCW - .05 REA + .2 KPF; 2) Yb = same as Ya with intercept changed to 3.2 and KPF deleted; 3) Yc = 3.0 + .984 AFT + .0041 HCW - .03 REA, as proposed by USDA in 1984; where AFT = adjusted fat thickness (cm), HCW = hot carcass weight (kg), REA = rib-eye area (cm2), and KPF = kidney and pelvic fat (%). Essentially boneless, closely trimmed (8 mm) roasts and steaks of the four major retail cuts (MRC) were made from one side of each carcass. Cutability was calculated as: Ca, % = 100 (MRC/side) and Cb,c % = 100 (MRC/side, KPF removed). Cutability increased (P less than .01) an average of two percentage points when KPF was removed. In general, removing KPF from the estimation of cutability and changing the coefficients for REA and HCW resulted in a decrease in the number of carcasses yield graded 1 or 4 and an increase in the number of carcasses in yield grade 2. Redistribution of carcasses was greater for Yc than for Yb. Carcasses classified with equation Yc tended (P greater than .05) to have greater cutability in yield grades 1 and 2, and lower (P less than .01) cutability in yield grades 3, 4 and 5.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A visual decay assessment of Pinus radiata wood, which was part of a framing timber in a house in the North Island of New Zealand, indicated the presence of surface decay. Microscopic observations, employing confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), provided evidence of decay by cavity-forming soft rot (SR) fungi. A comparison of ray tracheids (RT) with axial tracheids (AT) indicated that RT were considerably more resistant to SR than AT. In the heavily degraded regions of wood, where axial tracheid walls contained abundant SR cavities, the walls of RT contained only a few or no cavities. An assessment of lignin concentration in the cell walls by a combination of TEM, confocal fluorescence and UV microscopy provided evidence of greater lignin concentration in the secondary wall of RT as compared to AT, which may explain the observed greater resistance of RT to soft rot.
