Scientists, researchers, and their findings are critical factors in helping to resolve contemporary societal problems. Because of the tremendous interconnectivity of our lives and the expanded scope and scale of the medical and health problems we face, the research community needs to be both more involved and more competent in the development of public policy and to become more effective participants in the political and media activities in which their work is firmly embedded. This article suggests that researchers and scientists will be more relevant, have more impact, and be more productive if they can blend outstanding science with new non-cognitive skills that can reinforce the important social context of their work.  相似文献

Two genotypes of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) are recognised. Type 2 was first recognised when virulent strains caused significant losses among cattle in North America. Subsequently, BVDV type 2 has been found in many other countries, but recent studies have shown that only type 1 BVDV is circulating in the UK herds (sheep and cattle) with type 1a predominating. During routine genotyping of UK BVDV isolates, a type 2 isolate was identified. Phylogenetic analysis of the 5'-untranslated region of the viral genome showed it to be a BVDV type 2a, most similar to a low virulent US strain of BVDV type 2. Antigenic typing with a panel of monoclonal antibodies verified this classification. This is the first confirmed isolation of BVDV type 2 found circulating in the UK.  相似文献

There has been an increase in the number of wild ungulates kept in captivity for ecotourism and conservation in Zambia and these animals are susceptible to a number of diseases including gastrointestinal helminth infections. Surveys to determine anthelmintic efficacy to gastrointestinal nematodes in captive-wildlife are not common and there have been no reports of anthelmintic resistance in captive-wildlife in Zambia. This study was carried out to determine the efficacy of the benzimidazole anthelmintic fenbendazole in captive wild impala (Aepyceros melampus) in Zambia. During the month of April 2011, at the end of the rainy season, the faecal egg count reduction test was performed at a private game facility for assessing anthelmintic efficacy of oral fenbendazole and the anthelmintic treatment showed an efficacy of 90%. Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. were the predominant genera present before treatment, but Haemonchus spp. larvae were the only genus recovered from the faecal cultures after anthelmintic treatment. This represents the first documentation of anthelmintic treatment failure in captive wild-antelopes in Zambia. It also demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the common traditional practice of deworming captive-wild antelopes at the end of the rainy season due to the rapid re-infection of impala that occurs due to high pasture infectivity. Suggestions on changes to current anthelmintic use/practices that will make them more efficacious and reduce the possibility of development of anthelmintic resistance in captive wild game in Zambia are also made.  相似文献

Although species-specific aquaculture production systems typically operate over reduced geographical ranges relative to many other terrestrial animal production systems, it is nonetheless often necessary to transport live fish between facilities by road to permit on-growing or finishing. Road transport is therefore common in Australian salmonid (trout and salmon) production and is a particularly significant feature of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) culture in Tasmania, where it is necessary to transport juvenile fish (smolts) from inland freshwater hatchery facilities to coastal marine farms for grow-out to slaughter.The most obvious respect in which road transport of live fish differs from that of terrestrial livestock is the requirement to provide a life-support system for the duration of the process. Aside from an inherent requirement for water, it is essential to provide oxygenation to support basic respiration. Thereafter, water quality must be managed to limit the accumulation of potentially toxic metabolites. Among these, carbon dioxide (CO2) is of particular concern. Without appropriate management, CO2 can rapidly accumulate to levels as high as 80 mg/L-1 and result in hypercapnia, respiratory dysfunction, narcosis, and ultimately death. Current life-support systems typically function to maintain CO2 at acceptable levels of 20-30 mg/L-1. Water temperature changes during and at the end of the transport process may also be an issue but are typically only a relatively minor consideration.In common with other livestock transport systems, the loading process and associated handling can evoke a physiological stress response which, though intended to be adaptive, may interact synergistically with aspects of the life-support system. Increased rates of oxygen consumption and CO2 excretion place additional demands on the life-support system while, from the fish's perspective, the changes in gill perfusion and circulation that facilitate such alterations in gas exchange can also operate to increase solute loss and result in diuresis and ionoregulatory dysfunction. As a consequence, once a suitable life-support system has been provided, the efforts of salmon farmers are focused on the need to minimize handling stress. The majority operate sophisticated pumping and counting systems that are intended to minimize aerial exposure of fish and, in a manner consistent with the natural behavior of the animal, mimic as far as is practicable the process of being washed downstream.  相似文献

1. Commercial reproduction of turkeys relies on pooling of semen from multiple males for inseminations. Understanding how sperm characteristics influence paternity under commercial breeding conditions is important to improving production efficiency. 2. The objective of this study was to evaluate progeny production of individual toms following commercial practices of pooling semen to determine if sperm mobility influences progeny production in field conditions. 3. A total of 104 toms were evaluated for sperm mobility. A subset of 10 toms were housed together and semen was collected, pooled and used to inseminate hens (n = 28). Hens were inseminated at 30 weeks of age and weekly thereafter. 4. Ejaculates from each tom were evaluated on two separate days for sperm mobility. Semen from each tom was diluted and layered upon 6% (wt/vol) Accudenz solution. The sperm suspension was incubated at 41 degrees C for 5 min and absorbance was measured with a spectrophotometer. 5. Toms were ranked by absorbance and categorised as high or low if mobility score was +/- 1 SD from the flock mean (average). 6. For parentage determination, DNA was extracted from tom, hen and poult blood. Poult parentage (n = 276) was determined at one day of age or at 14 weeks by analysis of marker genotypes that were generated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of genomic DNA with selected microsatellite markers. 7. Sperm mobility differed across males with absorbance values ranging from 0.147 to 0.366. 8. Findings demonstrate differences in poult production among individual toms when semen from multiple males was pooled and inseminated. Toms classified as high, average and low produced 55, 41 and 4% of the offspring, respectively. 9. It appears that sperm mobility is a trait that influences sperm competition among toms under field conditions where sperm numbers inseminated from individual toms are not controlled or constant and that toms with low sperm mobility produce few offspring.  相似文献

A monoclonal antibody, AVS-I, was produced from a hybridization of murine myeloma cells and splenocytes from mice immunized with the La Sota strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV). The hybridoma producing AVS-I, selected from 184 NDV-positive supernatants, is one of two supernatants that reacted exclusively with lentogenic strains in an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. AVS-I can also be assayed by hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), which was used to test selected reference avian paramyxovirus (PMV) strains of types 1 to 3. NDV vaccines La Sota and B1 and field isolates from chickens, turkeys, pigeons, and cockatoos were also used as antigens. AVS-I had a high binding affinity for all La Sota and B1 strains, including vaccines. The antibody bound with a lower titer to the Australian Queensland V4 and Ulster strains, but it did not bind to the F strain, a lentogenic strain from England. AVS-I was HI-negative against the other PMV reference strains. AVS-I may be valuable for identifying field isolates antigenically similar to La Sota and B1 and rapidly differentiate those vaccine strains from more virulent viruses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To document pulmonary function, ventilator management, and outcome of dogs with thoracic trauma that required mechanical ventilation because of severe pulmonary contusions. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 10 dogs that required mechanical ventilation because of severe pulmonary contusions caused by blunt thoracic trauma. PROCEDURE: Signalment, historical data, arterial blood gas values, oxygen tension-based indices, ventilator settings, peak inspiratory pressure, positive end-expiratory pressure, tidal volume, and minute ventilation values were retrieved from medical records. RESULTS: All 10 dogs required positive-pressure ventilation because of dyspnea following trauma and had severely abnormal pulmonary function. Survival rate to discharge was 30%. Dogs were categorized into 2 groups; group A included 5 dogs in which pulmonary function improved during ventilation, whereas group B included 5 dogs that were euthanatized because of progressive lung dysfunction (n = 4) or cardiac arrest (1). Mean +/- SD body weight of group-A dogs (30.9 +/- 15.9 kg [68 +/- 35 lb]) was significantly greater than that of group-B dogs (7.6 +/- 1.8 kg [16.7 +/- 4 lb]). Dogs with improved lung function had peak inspiratory pressure that decreased progressively, whereas lung compliance deteriorated in dogs in group B. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dyspneic dogs with severe pulmonary contusions may require and benefit from positive-pressure ventilation Prognosis is better for dogs that weigh > 25 kg (55 lb).  相似文献

Objective: Correlate the necropsy diagnosis with the history, diagnostic findings, and clinical course of dyspneic cats with primary lung parenchymal disease. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Animals: Client‐owned cats over 6 months of age hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a primary problem of respiratory distress that had pulmonary parenchymal disease on thoracic radiographs, and a complete necropsy. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: Cats included were assigned into 2 groups based on the pulmonary histopathology: inflammatory (n=8) and neoplastic (n=7) disease. No statistical difference was found between the groups with regard to age, body weight, clinical signs, duration of clinical signs, physical examination findings, thoracic radiography, duration of hospitalization, treatment, and outcome. Cats with neoplasia had a statistically higher mean total white blood cell count (26.60 k/μL±10.41) than those with inflammatory lung disease (11.59 k/μL±4.49; P=0.026). Cats with bacterial or viral pulmonary disease had a significantly shorter median duration of illness (5 days, range 1–7 days) than all other cats (30 days, range 7–365 days; P=0.0042). Ultrasound guided pulmonary fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) provided an accurate diagnosis in 5/5 cases. Conclusions: Forty‐seven percent of cats with pulmonary parenchymal disease had neoplasia. The clinical diagnosis was difficult to obtain ante‐mortem; lung FNA appeared to be the most helpful diagnostic tool in these cases.  相似文献
