A systems analysis of the guyanese livestock industry

This paper attempts to contribute to the capability for livestock sub-sector analysis. A model structure which offers potential for evaluation of changes of policy, available production technology, or factor and product market conditions is described. The structure integrates a multi-year biological cattle simulator with a price endogenous model of the cattle sub-sector to yield a model designed to simulate aggregate behaviour of profit maximising cattle producers interacting through competitive factor and product markets. The general model structure is specified to reflect conditions in Guyana, South America. The model, specified for Guyanese conditions, is used to evaluate the probable impact of a number of technical and economic changes in the system.     

Timing of hot spot--related volcanism and the breakup of madagascar and India

Widespread basalts and rhyolites were erupted in Madagascar during the Late Cretaceous. These are considered to be related to the Marion hot spot and the breakup of Madagascar and Greater India. Seventeen argon-40/argon-39 age determinations reveal that volcanic rocks and dikes from the 1500-kilometer-long rifted eastern margin of Madagascar were emplaced rapidly (mean age = 87.6 +/- 0.6 million years ago) and that the entire duration of Cretaceous volcanism on the island was no more than 6 million years. The evidence suggests that the thick lava pile at Volcan de l'Androy in the south of the island marks the focal point of the Marion hot spot at approximately 88 million years ago and that this mantle plume was instrumental in causing continental breakup.     

Evaluating Remote Sensing for Determining and Classifying Soybean Anomalies

Two soybean fields were monitored in 2001 and 2002 to determine the utility of multispectral imagery for locating and classifying crop anomalies. Crop anomalies may be due to planter problems, soil problems, weed infestations and stressed soybean plants. Three image collection dates per location for each year were used in a supervised classification analysis. In 2002, aerial images were evaluated for potential use as a directed scouting tool. Remotely sensed data as a scouting tool detected 50–100% of anomalies detected by ground truthing. The number of anomalies detected by aerial imagery decreased through the growing season, while the number of anomalies found from directed scouting remained relatively constant. Thus, agreement was higher later in the growing season, since remote sensing was detecting more anomalies than the ground truthing efforts did. Excluding bare soil and healthy soybean situations, anomalies due to stress on soybean plants in the form of iron chlorosis and stunted plants yielded highest classification accuracies, ranging from 83% to 90% both years. This is attributed to differences in coloration of soybean plants with iron chlorosis and lack of full canopy coverage of stunted soybean. Herbicide damage due to overlap of spray boom led to classification accuracies from 50% to 67%. The overlap of the spray boom was not widespread in the field; thus, fewer areas of interests could be constructed for testing purposes, which may explain the decrease in classification accuracies.     

Femtosecond dynamics of electron localization at interfaces

The dynamics of two-dimensional small-polaron formation at ultrathin alkane layers on a silver(111) surface have been studied with femtosecond time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. Optical excitation creates interfacial electrons in quasi-free states for motion parallel to the interface. These initially delocalized electrons self-trap as small polarons in a localized state within a few hundred femtoseconds. The localized electrons then decay back to the metal within picoseconds by tunneling through the adlayer potential barrier. The energy dependence of the self-trapping rate has been measured and modeled with a theory analogous to electron transfer theory. This analysis determines the inter- and intramolecular vibrational modes of the overlayer responsible for self-trapping as well as the relaxation energy of the overlayer molecular lattice. These results for a model interface contribute to the fundamental picture of electron behavior in weakly bonded solids and can lead to better understanding of carrier dynamics in many different systems, including organic light-emitting diodes.     

The ecoresponsive genome of Daphnia pulex

We describe the draft genome of the microcrustacean Daphnia pulex, which is only 200 megabases and contains at least 30,907 genes. The high gene count is a consequence of an elevated rate of gene duplication resulting in tandem gene clusters. More than a third of Daphnia's genes have no detectable homologs in any other available proteome, and the most amplified gene families are specific to the Daphnia lineage. The coexpansion of gene families interacting within metabolic pathways suggests that the maintenance of duplicated genes is not random, and the analysis of gene expression under different environmental conditions reveals that numerous paralogs acquire divergent expression patterns soon after duplication. Daphnia-specific genes, including many additional loci within sequenced regions that are otherwise devoid of annotations, are the most responsive genes to ecological challenges.     

Folate content in commercial white and whole wheat sandwich breads

After the U.S. mandate of folic acid fortification of enriched grain products, a report indicated higher than expected fortification. Limited information is available on folic acid in enriched products. We measured the folate content in 92 sandwich breads (46 white breads and 46 whole wheat breads) in Birmingham, Alabama, during 2001-2003. The mean folate content in white bread declined significantly from 2001 to 2002 or 2003, whereas the decline in folate content in whole wheat bread containing enriched flour was not significant. White bread contained significantly more folate than whole wheat bread containing enriched flour in 2001 and 2003. In 2002 and 2003, >40% of breads made of enriched flour contained <115 microg of folate/100 g and >70% contained <160 microg/100 g. These percentages were markedly higher than those in 2001. Our data suggest that folic acid in breads containing enriched flour declined after 2001 and monitoring of fortification may be necessary.     

Evaluation of mechlorethamine,vinblastine, procarbazine,and prednisone for the treatment of resistant multicentric canine lymphoma

Multi-agent chemotherapy successfully induces remission in most naïve, high-grade canine lymphoma patients; however, disease recurrence is common. MOPP (mechlorethamine, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone) is an effective rescue protocol used to re-induce remission, but is associated with gastrointestinal toxicity and can be a less desirable option for patients that previously failed vincristine-containing protocols. Therefore, alternative members of the vinca alkaloid family, such as vinblastine, could be potentially advantageous as substitutes for vincristine to reduce gastrointestinal toxicity and chemoresistance. The objective of this study was to report the clinical outcomes and toxicity of 36 dogs with relapsed or refractory multicentric lymphoma treated with a modified MOPP protocol whereby vincristine was replaced with vinblastine (MVPP). The overall response rate to MVPP was 25% with a median progression free survival of 15 days and a median overall survival of 45 days. MVPP at the prescribed doses resulted in modest and transient clinical benefit, but was well tolerated with no treatment delays or hospitalizations secondary to side effects. Given the minimal toxicity, dose intensification could be considered to improve clinical responses.     

Induction of IL-2 and lymphokine activated killer cells in the cat

We have described the use of a cloned murine IL-2-dependent T-cell line to directly measure feline IL-2. Concanavalin A stimulated feline peripheral blood lymphocytes produced an IL-2-rich supernatant that supported the growth of this murine IL-2-dependent T-cell line. In addition to producing IL-2, Con A stimulated killer cells in PBL were cytotoxic for the FeLV transformed tumor cell line FL74. Incubating feline PBL with a cocktail of the calcium ionophore A23187 and phorbol ester also led to the generation of cytotoxic cells as well as the production of high levels of IL-2. Finally, IL-2-rich supernatant was able to stimulate cytotoxic activity in PBL from normal cats.
