Three-week iron (Fe) deficiency stress experiments were conducted using two citrus root stocks, Fe-deficiency tolerant Orange Jasmine (OJ, Murraya exotica L.) and the sensitive Flying Dragon [FD, Poncirus trifoliata var. monstrosa (T. Ito) Swingle]. Root ferric chelate reductase activity and proton extrusion increased in OJ between 12 and 18 d of stress, whereas there was no change in FD. Dry weight of OJ roots increased in contrast to FD which decreased. The Mn content in OJ remained the same even under Fe stress. Zn content in OJ roots doubled while that of FD increased 4-folds. The shoot/root Fe accumulation ratio increased in OJ while it decreased in FD. OJ apparently has mechanisms for increasing root biomass, controlling Fe reutilization and regulating manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) absorption in response to Fe deficiency. These mechanisms could help maintain homeostasis under heavy metal stress, which would be useful for improved growth of economically important citrus species. 相似文献

Six new anthraquinone glycosides: digiferruginol-1-methylether-11-O-β-gentiobioside (1); digiferruginol-11-O-β-primeveroside (2); damnacanthol-11-O-β-primeveroside (3); 1-methoxy-2-primeverosyloxymethyl-anthraquinone-3-olate (4); 1-hydroxy-2-primeverosyloxymethyl-anthraquinone-3-olate (5); and 1-hydroxy-5,6-dimethoxy-2-methyl-7-primeverosyloxyanthraquinone (6) were isolated from Morinda citrifolia (Rubiaceae) roots together with four known anthraquinone glycosides. The structures of the new compounds were established using spectral methods. For five of the new compounds, the sugar is attached via the hydroxymethyl group of the anthraquinone C-2 carbon. Oxidative modification of LDL plays an important role in the genesis of arteriosclerosis. This study focused on the effects of the leaves of Baeckea frutescens in the prevention of arteriosclerosis. The leaves of B. frutescens have afforded, besides known flavonoid and chromone glycosides, a novel biflavonoid glycoside, characterized as 3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosylmyricetinyl-(I-2″,II-2″)-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosylmyricetin on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence. In order to improve the efficiency of stock enhancement programs for the sea urchin Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, information on food algal species, which affect growth and gonad production greatly, is necessary. Since it is difficult to identify species from the macroalgal fragments within the gut contents of the sea urchin by microscopic observation, we tried to apply a DNA barcoding method for gut contents analysis. We used a partial rbcL gene sequence for taxonomic section and newly designed primer sets, respectively, for brown algae and for red algae. Direct sequencing of the PCR products was carried out. Species identification was based on the phylogenetic relationship. We could objectively identify four species and two taxonomic groups (genus or family) in brown algae, and two species and four taxonomic groups in red algae from the gut contents. Sargassum hemiphyllum was the most abundant brown alga in the gut contents but was not dominant in the study site. The result showed the importance of identification to the species level. In addition, red algal epiphytes were detected with brown algal fragments. The DNA barcoding method will enable the researchers to verify the important role of epiphytes as a potential food source. 相似文献

The fluctuations in the plasma levels of several bone markers were investigated in newborn calves. Experiment
1 monitored the postnatal changes in the plasma levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b
(TRAP5b), total alkaline phosphatase (t-ALP) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) in four calves.
These markers increased significantly from 9−20 hr after the first colostrum-suckling compared with the values
immediately after birth. Experiment 2 evaluated changes in the plasma TRAP5b, t-ALP, BAP and type I collagen
cross-linked N-telopeptide (NTx) levels within 2 days post-birth in five calves with successful passive
immunization via colostrum (non-deficient group) and five others with poor colostrum intake (deficient group).
The non-deficient group had significantly higher plasma levels of the four parameters around 12 hr of life
compared with the deficient group. The results suggest that the increase in plasma bone markers in calves in

A consecutive series of cases of dogs and cats with locked jaw syndrome (inability to open or close the mouth) are reported in this study. Dogs were significantly overrepresented (84.0%) and adult dogs were more frequently affected (81.0%). Temporomandibular joint ankylosis due to fracture was the most common cause (54.0%) of locked jaw syndrome. Additional potential causes of locked jaw syndrome are masticatory muscle myositis, neoplasia, trigeminal nerve paralysis and central neurological lesions, temporomandibular joint luxation and dysplasia, osteoarthritis, retrobulbar abscess, tetanus, and severe ear disease. Treatment of locked jaw is directed towards the primary cause. It is important to treat the tonic spasm in order to minimize periarticular fibrosis. Surgical intervention is recommended for temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Masticatory muscle myositis treatment is initiated by gradually opening the mouth, with medical treatment based on immunosuppressive therapy. Fracture and masticatory muscle myositis are associated with a relatively good prognosis in regard to short-term outcome as compared to animals with central neurologic lesions or osteosarcoma which have a poor prognosis. 相似文献
