Twenty first-year veterinary students with no prior participatory experience in surgery were randomly paired and assigned into two study groups. Ten students (group V) viewed a hemostatic technique video tape until they thought they could competently perform and assist in performing a hand-tied ligature on a blood vessel in a live animal. Ten students (group VS) wer also given a simulator for technique practice. Paired students were video recorded and blindly evaluated on their ability to perform and assist proper ligation of a bleeding vessel. Inexpensive hemostasis models were very helpful for teaching students essential surgeon and assistant skills involved in hand-tied ligature placement. Students who practiced with simulators performed significantly better as surgeon and assistant, and in total psychomotor skill evaluation, then students watching the video only. Students using simulators performed ligation with significantly more accuracy and tended to be more expeditious at this task. Further training is needed for students to acquire skills necessary for efficient bleeding vessel exposure and isolation. 相似文献

A model for the study of equine cutaneous physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology was developed. Four 4 x 12 cm and twenty-one 6 x 12 cm single-pedicle axial pattern skin flaps based on the caudal superficial epigastric artery, and eight 6 x 12 cm flaps based on the saphenous artery and medial saphenous vein, were raised and sutured in a tubed configuration. On day 2, each flap was removed, the artery was cannulated, and the flap was perfused with a modified Krebs-Ringer's albumin-based medium for at least 6 hours. Flap viability was assessed by glucose use, lactate production, and histologic examination at the end of the perfusion period. The 4 x 12 cm flaps had evidence of skin necrosis, but the 6 x 12 cm flaps remained histologically viable. Results were compared to those previously reported from perfusion of porcine skin flaps based on the caudal superficial epigastric artery. While the ratios of glucose use to lactate production were similar, equine flaps used less glucose and produced less lactate per gram of tissue than similar pig flaps. Equine skin flaps perfused by saphenous vessels used more glucose and produced more lactate than flaps perfused by caudal superficial epigastric vessels. These results indicate that conclusions drawn from cutaneous physiology studies should not be extrapolated across species lines and that site-specific skin should be used for cutaneous physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology studies. High-resolution, real-time ultrasonographic examinations of the neck were performed on eight normal dogs maintained under general anesthesia. Water-soluble dye was injected into imaged structures under sonographic guidance in two dogs. The anatomy of the neck was verified at postmortem by visualization of dye deposited in the injected structures. Anatomical mapping was then completed by performing complete cervical ultrasound examinations in the remaining six dogs. Objectives— To determine the incidence of postoperative ileus (POI) in a population of horses after small intestinal surgery and the effect of multiple variables on development of POI.
Study Design— Case series.
Animals— Horses (n=233) aged ≥1 year that had exploratory celiotomy for small intestinal disease that recovered from surgery from 1995 to 2005.
Methods— Sixty-eight variables were collected from medical records (1995–2005) for each horse. POI was defined as nasogastric reflux volume >20 L over 24 hours or >8 L at any single time after surgery.
Results— Twenty-seven percent (64/233) of horses developed POI; 29 of 64 (46%) horses with POI had duodenitis proximal jejunitis (DPJ). When no intestinal resection was required at surgery, excluding horses with DPJ, 15% of horses had POI; 30% horses had POI after intestinal resection. Ten percent of horses had POI for >24 hours. When horses with DPJ were excluded, factors associated with increased risk of POI included high packed cell volume at hospital admission ( P =.024), increasing age ( P =.0004), and length of intestinal resection ( P =.05).
Conclusions— Risk factors for POI in this study were nonspecific although horses with intestinal resection are at higher risk compared with horses without intestinal resection.
Clinical Relevance— Predicting with certainty which cases will develop POI remains elusive. 相似文献

In this retrospective study, medical records of 26 horses whose eyelids were tattooed were analyzed, and data regarding age, breed, eyelid pigment, eye color, sex, and reproductive status of the horses were compiled. Owners of the horses were contacted by telephone and questioned about their horses. Twenty-six horses were tattooed at Colorado State University (CSU), and one of them was tattooed twice. Records were available for 26 horses, and follow-up results by telephone were completed for 22 of those. Telephone follow-up times ranged from 3 months to 17 years after tattooing. American Paint Horses constituted 62% (16/26) of the cases, followed by Appaloosas (19% = 5/26), and Quarter Horses (8% = 2/26). In 100% (22/22) of cases, the reason for presenting the horse for a tattoo was lack of periocular pigmentation. Only two horses developed ocular or periocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) after their tattoos. Although the results of this study suggest that tattooing may be protective against SCC and solar blepharitis, it is by no means conclusive. However it appears to have no deleterious effects, and often owners like the appearance of the tattooed eyelid. 相似文献

Equine Welfare and Carriage Horse Companies have been recently highlighted as matters of public concern, although little data exists to describe working conditions, municipal regulations, and veterinary attention. In light of the current pandemic of unwanted horses in this country, it is prudent for the veterinary community to identify objective measurements of satisfactory equine welfare in the carriage horse industry to regulate and maintain working horses in sound conditions. Retrospective data from a carriage company in South Carolina was collected from 2009 to 2012. Variables included days in work, hours and/or tours worked, veterinary charges, management practices, and environmental conditions. City veterinary reports were also reviewed for all five local carriage companies. The average number of days in work per animal ranged from 163 to 188 per year. On average, each animal performed 4.6 hour long tours per working day, resulting in an average 865 tours per year. Each animal cost on average $2.00 per day in veterinary costs, and $0.84 of each animal's tour went toward veterinary bills. Welfare among carriage horses is a subject on which equine veterinarians should be well versed; not only to answer questions from clientele but also to promote good working and living conditions for these animals in an effort to stem the number of unwanted horses in America. The carriage company reported in detail here provides acceptable welfare for their animals.
