Internationally, large populations of feral cats constitute an important and controversial issue due to their impact on cat overpopulation, animal welfare, public health, and the environment, and to disagreement about what are the best methods for their control. Trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs are an increasingly popular alternative to mass euthanasia. The objective of this study was to determine the population characteristics of feral cats admitted to large-scale TNR programs from geographically diverse locations in the United States. Data from 103,643 feral cats admitted to TNR programs from 1993 to 2004 were evaluated. All groups reported more intact females (53.4%) than intact males (44.3%); only 2.3% of the cats were found to be previously sterilized. Overall, 15.9% of female cats were pregnant at the time of surgery. Pregnancy was highly seasonal and peaked between March and April for all of the groups. The average prenatal litter size was 4.1+/-0.1 fetuses per litter. Cryptorchidism was observed in 1.3% of male cats admitted for sterilization. A total of 0.4% of cats was euthanased because of the presence of debilitating conditions, and 0.4% died during the TNR clinics. Remarkably similar populations of cats with comparable seasonal variability were seen at each program, despite their wide geographical distribution. These results suggest that it is feasible to safely sterilize large numbers of feral cats and that the experiences of existing programs are a consistent source of information upon which to model new TNR programs.  相似文献

An 8-year-old, male, Alaskan malamute was evaluated for a 2-week history of lethargy, inappetence, and distended abdomen. The dog was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism, exhibited facial myxedema and had myocardial dysfunction with ascites and pleural effusion. Myocardial function improved and facial myxedema and effusions resolved with levothyroxine supplementation.  相似文献

Two clinical cases of equine proliferative enteropathy are described. Both foals had a positive fecal polymerase chain reaction, but shedding of the bacterium stopped <4 days after therapy was initiated. The somatotropic axis, including growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, and IGF binding proteins (IGFBP), is a bridge between growth physiology, developmental age, and nutritional status in domestic animals. However, the importance of the somatotropic axis in nutrition, growth, and development of harbor seals has not been previously explored. Given the difficulty of conducting longitudinal studies in free-ranging harbor seals, this study focused on the potential use of harbor seals in rehabilitation facilities as a model for free-ranging seals. The purpose of this research was to compare concentrations of components of the somatotropic axis in free-ranging versus rehabilitated harbor seal pups. The hypothesis was that measurements of the somatotropic axis will be similar between individuals of comparable age and nutritional status (fasting versus feeding). To investigate this hypothesis, harbor seal pups (n=8) brought to The Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, California, USA) or Mystic Aquarium (Mystic, Connecticut, U.S.A.) were initially assessed and determined to be healthy but abandoned. All pups were less than 2 wk of age upon arrival at rehabilitation facilities. Standard length was assessed at the time of arrival and again at release. Body mass was measured every week and blood samples were collected from each pup at 0, 4, and 8 wk of rehabilitation. Blood was collected and morphometrics assessed in free-ranging harbor seal pups (n=8) from the Gulf of Maine. Sera were analyzed for GH, IGF-I, and IGFBP concentrations. Concentrations of GH, IGF-I, and IGFBP-2 and -3 in rehabilitated pups were within a similar range compared with free-ranging pups when considered in the context of presumed nutrient intake. These data suggest that rehabilitated harbor seals may provide a useful model to investigate the effects of nutrient intake on growth and development of harbor seals, and will provide insight into phocid endocrinology and metabolism.  相似文献

An 8‐year‐old, neutered male, Golden Retriever presented for bilateral carpal joint effusion. A complete blood count revealed mild leukopenia and marked thrombocytopenia. Samples were sent to the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory for blood smear review and serologic testing for tick‐borne diseases. Numerous morulae were observed within neutrophils, and antibodies against Ehrlichia canis were detected at a 1:512 dilution via the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. As neutrophilic morulae are morphologically indistinguishable between Ehrlichia ewingii and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and genus‐wide cross‐reactivity is possible with serologic testing, additional molecular testing was performed. Quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) followed by conventional PCR and Sanger sequencing were performed on serum identified with E ewingii as the sole disease‐causing agent. Three months after diagnosis and treatment, no morulae were found, molecular testing for E ewingii detected no DNA, and convalescent IFA testing demonstrated a continued detection of antibodies for E canis at a 1:512 dilution. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of E ewingii confirmed with molecular diagnostics in a Texas dog. The zoonotic transmission potential of E ewingii should be noted as Texas supports competent tick vectors, and dogs represent effective sentinels for human ehrlichiosis. This report also highlights the utility of molecular diagnostics when serologic and microscopic evaluations are not sufficient in providing the species‐level identity of a causative agent.  相似文献

Objective – To report the surgical repair, case management, and outcome of a dog with sepsis and severe intraabdominal trauma secondary to a penetrating stick injury. Case or Series Summary – A 1.5‐year‐old, spayed female, mixed‐breed dog was presented to the emergency service after incurring a small laceration on the medial aspect of the left pelvic limb while running in the woods. The wound was surgically explored and a primary closure achieved. The patient was discharged the same day with oral antimicrobial therapy. The following morning the dog was represented to the emergency service for acute vomiting. Abdominal radiographs were performed and demonstrated loss of serosal detail and pneumoperitoneum. An emergency celiotomy was performed and revealed distal colonic perforation, left ureteral laceration, and lacerations of the left common iliac vein. Ureteronephrectomy, as well as primary closure of the distal colonic perforation and left common iliac vein lacerations, were performed. The patient recovered and was ultimately discharged from the hospital 5 days later. Follow‐up 1 year later revealed no significant physical exam or biochemical abnormalities. New or Unique Information Provided – A seemingly benign penetrating stick injury initially deemed to be superficial in nature was later demonstrated to have resulted in sepsis following severe intraabdominal trauma that included lacerations of the distal colon, left ureter, and left common iliac vein in a dog. Successful surgical management and intensive care led to a full recovery without any residual impairment noted a year later.  相似文献

In order to screen microsatellites for conservation genetics studies of the species, a total of 23 microsatellite loci from Korean goral (Naemorhedus caudatus), including 15 previously developed loci and 8 new loci in this study, were tested. Eleven microsatellites were screened and subjected to cross-species amplification using a test panel of four Caprinae species, Japanese serows (Capricornis crispus), Chinese gorals (Naemorhedus goral), Northern chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) and domestic goats (Capra hircus). In addition, all eleven microsatellites (SY3A, SY12A, SY12B, SY48, SY58, SY71, SY76, SY84, SY84B, SY112, and SY129) satisfied the criteria to be a core set of microsatellites. This core set of microsatellites and cross-species amplification of Korean goral microsatellites were found to be helpful for high-resolution studies for conservation and management of Korean goral and other endangered Caprinae species.  相似文献

Prazosin is a readily available alpha-adrenergic antagonist that may be useful in the management of functional urethral obstruction in companion animals. This study used urethral pressure profilometry to evaluate the urethral effects of prazosin and phenoxybenzamine in healthy, non-sedated, male Beagle dogs. Heart rate, indirect systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures were measured, and saline perfusion urethral pressure profilometry was performed at 0, 10, 20, and 40 min following intravenous administration of prazosin (0.025 mg/kg), phenoxybenzamine (0.2 mg/kg), or placebo. Maximal urethral pressure, maximal urethral closure pressure, post peak nadir, and all blood pressure parameters decreased significantly at nearly all treatment intervals following administration of prazosin compared with placebo. Less consistently significant reductions were observed following phenoxybenzamine administration. Maximal decreases in urethral pressure parameters were observed 20 min following the injection of prazosin; maximal blood pressure decreases were evident by 10 min post- injection. In this non-sedated dog model, urethral pressure profilometry was a sensitive method of detecting urethral effects of alpha antagonists. Repeatable reductions in urethral pressure measurements were observed, with prazosin effecting more consistently significant changes than phenoxybenzamine. Significant decreases in systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures were seen with prazosin, but not phenoxybenzamine or placebo. Further study of selective alpha-1 antagonists in dogs is needed to determine appropriate oral dosing protocols that will produce maximal urethral effects with minimal hemodynamic effects, and to demonstrate clinical efficacy in dogs with functional urethral obstruction.  相似文献
