Banana and plantain are among the most important food crops in developing countries but production is threatened by increasing
virulent forms of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. Chemical control is not economically effective and,therefore, breeding programs are necessary. Traditional field studies
of new genotype resistance to this disease are time-consuming and destructive. Therefore,we developed a rapid and non-destructive
procedure to differentiate field-grown banana resistant from susceptible clones. This procedure implicates application of
culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race 1 onto banana leaves. The relationship between duration of the fungal in vitro incubation, and the fungal culture fresh mass, the culture filtrate absorbency, and the Gross Michel (susceptible cultivar)leaf
lesion area (after application of the culture filtrate) were similar and at 24day-incubation the highest values of the recorded
indicators were observed. A comparison between Gross Michel and FHIA-01(resistant) was also performed. The most relevant differences
between cultivars were observed at 48 hours after application of the culture filtrate, and in the middle-aged leaves. The
position of the culture filtrate application in the leaf limb (distal, middle, proximal) was not determinant. A wider comparison
among banana cultivars confirmed previous results informed by other researchers using different systems to study this plant-fungus
interaction. Such a confirmation validates the effectiveness of the procedure described here to select rapid and non-destructively
banana resistance to this disease at field level.

There has been considerable controversy regarding xylem embolism resistance for long-vesselled angiosperm species and particularly for the model species for refilling (Laurus nobilis L.).Aims
The purpose of this study was to resolve the hydraulic properties of this species by documenting vulnerability curves of different organs in intact plants.Methods
Here, we applied a direct, non-invasive method to visualize xylem embolism in stems and leaves of intact laurel seedlings up to 2-m tall using X-ray microtomography (microCT) observations and the optical vulnerability technique. These approaches were coupled with complementary centrifugation measurements performed on 1-m long branches sampled from adult trees and compared with additional microCT analyses carried out on 80-cm cut branches.Results
Direct observations of embolism spread during desiccation of intact laurels revealed that 50% loss of xylem conductivity (Ψ50) was reached at ??7.9?±?0.5 and ??8.4?±?0.3 MPa in stems and leaves, respectively, while the minimum xylem water potentials measured in the field were ??4.2 MPa during a moderate drought season. Those findings reveal that embolism formation is not routine in Laurus nobilis contrary to what has been previously reported. These Ψ50 values were close to those based on the flow-centrifuge technique (??9.2?±?0.2 MPa), but at odds with microCT observations of cut branches (??4.0?±?0.5 MPa).Conclusion
In summary, independent methods converge toward the same conclusion that laurel is highly resistant to xylem embolism regardless its development stage. Under typical growth conditions without extreme drought events, this species maintains positive hydraulic safety margin, while daily cycles of embolism formation and refilling are unlikely to occur in this species.44.

Rooting space is considered as a resource in plants, but comparative studies on the biomass allocation plasticity in response
to rooting volume (RV) are rare. We compared responses in growth, biomass allocation and ontogenetic heteroblasty in nine
hard pine species of contrasted ecology. Seedlings were cultivated in containers of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.8 and 7 L for two growing
seasons (425 days). Reduction in RV caused a reduction in plant absolute and relative growth rate and biomass allocated to
stems but it increased biomass allocated to roots. RV affected to a lesser extent and in a less consistent direction allocation
to leaves. Species that grew faster (higher relative growth rate) had a steeper decrease in growth with the reduction in RV.
Ontogenetic heteroblasty, evaluated as the proportion of secondary needles in the needle biomass, showed highly different
plasticity patterns in response to RV. Decrease in RV caused negligible or no change either in the most ontogenetically delayed
Mediterranean pines or in the most ontogenetically advanced pines, the mesic Pinus sylvestris and P. uncinata. By contrast, ontogenetically intermediate species showed steep reaction norms in response to reduction in RV. This study presents a method for estimating the minimum area which exhibits a balanced diameter distribution, and the corresponding number of trees, for different tree species and forest types in the Santiago Papasquiaro region in the State of Durango, Mexico. The balanced structure area is defined as the minimum contiguous area that is required for sustainable management of a multi-sized selection forest. A multi-sized forest represents a balanced structure unit if the relationship between harvest and growth can be maintained, using a defined target diameter distribution and disregarding major natural disturbances. In wheat, the increase of yield and stability associated traits can be achieved by combining parents containing the stay-green trait and favorable alleles for grain yield. Genetic variability exists among wheat strains from the synchronized stay-green maturation group and elite cultivars. Rubber production in the rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] can be expressed differently in different environments. Thus the objective of the present study was to select productive progenies, stable and responsive in time and among locations. Thirty progenies were assessed by early yield tests at three ages and in three locations. A randomized block design was used with three replications and ten plants per plot, in 3 × 3 m spacing. The procedure of the mixed linear Reml/Blup model—restricted maximum likelihood/best non-biased linear prediction was used in the genetic statistical analyses. In all the individual analyses, the values observed for the progeny average heritability ( $ \hat{h}_{pa}^{2} $ ) were greater than those of the additive effect based on single individuals ( $ \hat{h}_{a}^{2} $ ) and within plot additive ( $ \hat{h}_{ad}^{2} $ ). In the joint analyses in time, there was genotype × test interaction in the three locations. When 20 % of the best progenies were selected the predicted genetic gains were: Colina GG = 24.63 %, Selvíria GG = 13.63 %, and Votuporanga GG = 25.39 %. Two progenies were among the best in the analyses in the time and between locations. In the joint analysis among locations there was only genotype × location interaction in the first early test. In this test, selecting 20 %, the general predicted genetic gain was GG = 25.10 %. Identifying progenies with high and stable yield over time and among locations contributes to the efficiency of the genetic breeding program. The relative performance of the progenies varies depending of the age of early selection test. 相似文献
