Victual Vicissitudes: Consumer Deskilling and the (Gendered) Transformation of Food Systems 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A considerable literature addresses worker deskilling in manufacturing and the related loss of control over production processes
experienced by farmers and others working in the agri-food industry. Much less attention has been directed at a parallel process
of consumer deskilling in the food system, which has been no less important. Consumer deskilling in its various dimensions
carries enormous consequences for the restructuring of agro-food systems and for consumer sovereignty, diets, and health.
The prevalence of packaged, processed, and industrially transformed foodstuffs is often explained in terms of consumer preference
for convenience. A closer look at the social construction of “consumers” reveals that the agro-food industry has waged a double
disinformation campaign to manipulate and to re-educate consumers while appearing to respond to consumer demand. Many consumers
have lost the knowledge necessary to make discerning decisions about the multiple dimensions of quality, including the contributions
a well-chosen diet can make to health, planetary sustainability, and community economic development. They have also lost the
skills needed to make use of basic commodities in a manner that allows them to eat a high quality diet while also eating lower
on the food chain and on a lower budget. This process has a significant gender dimension, as it is the autonomy of those primarily
responsible for purchasing and preparing foodstuffs that has been systematically undermined. Too often, food industry professionals
and regulatory agencies have been accessories to this process by misdirecting attention to the less important dimensions of
quality.

Cardiovascular effects of high dose opioid together with low dose inhalant were compared with inhalant alone to determine whether opioid/inhalant techniques were less depressant on the cardiovascular system. The effects of positive pressure ventilation and increasing heart rate to a more physiological level were also studied. Cardiovascular measurements recorded during administration of enflurane at 1.3 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC; 2.89 +/- 0.02%) to spontaneously breathing dogs (time 1) and during controlled ventilation [arterial carbon dioxide tension at 40 +/- 3 mmHg (time 2)] were similar. At time 2, mixed venous oxygen tension and arterial and mixed venous carbon dioxide tensions were significantly decreased, while arterial and mixed venous pH were significantly increased compared to measurements at time 1. After administration of fentanyl to achieve plasma fentanyl concentration of 71.7 +/- 14.4 ng/mL and reduction of enflurane concentration to yield 1.3 MAC multiple (0.99 +/- 0.01%), heart rate significantly decreased, while mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure, stroke index, and systemic vascular resistance index increased compared to measurements taken at times 1 and 2. Pulmonary arterial occlusion pressure was significantly increased compared to measurements taken at time 2. After administration of atropine until heart rate was 93 +/- 5 beats/min (plasma fentanyl concentration 64.5 +/- 13.5 ng/mL) heart rate, mean arterial pressure, cardiac index, oxygen delivery index, and venous admixture increased significantly compared to values obtained at all other times.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The relation of the density of the lunar surface layer to depth is probably best determined from spacecraft measurements of the bearing capacity as a function of depth. A comparison of these values with laboratory measurements of the bearing capacity of low-cohesion particulate materials as a function of the percentage of solid indicates that the bulk density at the lunar surface is about 1.1 grams per cubic centimeter and that it increases nearly linearly to about 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter at a depth of 5 centimeters. 相似文献

Analysis of discoloration patterns on the camera of the spacecraft Surveyor 3, after the Apollo 12 lunar module landed nearby, indicates that lunar surface particles were eroded and entrained by lunar modute exhaust during the landing and were ejected almost horizontally at 70 meters per second or faster. Carbon monoxide is a toxic pollutant which is continually introduced into the Earth's atmosphere in significant quantities. There are apparently some mechanisms operating which destroy most of the CO in the atmosphere i.e., a CO ‘sink’. These mechanisms have not as yet been established in a quantitative sense. This work considers the various possible removal mechanisms which warrant serious consideration. Particular emphasis is given to chemical reactions (especially that with OH), soil bacteria and other biological action, and transport effects. The sources of CO, both natural and anthropogenic, are reviewed and it is noted that there is quite possibly a significant undefined natural source. The kidney, and to a slight extent the liver, of human fetuses were found to synthesize and secrete the alpha subunit common to glycoprotein hormones. Fetal lung and muscle did not synthesize this protein. Since fetal kidney and liver were previously found to synthesize beta chorionic gonadotropin, their ability to synthesize bioactive chorionic gonadotropin was also determined. The newly synthesized hormone bound to mouse Leydig cells and elicited a biological response: namely, the synthesis of testosterone. A pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) hormone that controls sex pheromone production in female moths was identified from the brain-subesophageal ganglion complexes of the adult corn earworm, Heliothis zea. PBAN has 33 amino acid residues and a molecular weight of 3900. Its amino acid sequence has no significant homology with any of the fully characterized peptide hormones. The synthetic peptide, at a dose of between 2 and 4 picomoles, induced production of a normal quantity of sex pheromone in ligated H. zea females. The peptide also induced pheromone production in six other species of moths, thus indicating that this or similar peptides may be responsible for the regulation of pheromone production in moths. 相似文献
