The Composite Infrared Spectrometer observed Jupiter in the thermal infrared during the swing-by of the Cassini spacecraft. Healthy, purpose-bred laboratory beagle dogs that had not been exposed to ticks and were seronegative for Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum were randomly assigned to four groups of eight dogs each. Control group 1 was not treated. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were treated with a single topical application of a new formulation of fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene (CERTIFECT?, Merial Limited, GA, USA) at 28, 21 or 14 days prior to tick infestation, respectively. Each dog was infested with 25 female and 25 male field-collected adult Ixodes scapularis ticks that had infection rates of 66% for B. burgdorferi sensu stricto and 23% for A. phagocytophilum, as determined by polymerase chain reaction. Two and five days after tick infestation, control dogs had an average of 9.5 and 13.9 attached adult female ticks, respectively, whilst the 24 treated dogs remained tick-free aside from a single tick on the 2nd day after infestation. Serial serological tests demonstrated that the ticks successfully infected 8/8 control dogs with B. burgdorferi and co-infected 6/8 with A. phagocytophilum. B. burgdorferi infection also was confirmed in most control dogs by culture (6/8) and PCR (7/8) of skin biopsies. In contrast, CERTIFECT protected all 24 treated dogs against infection by both B. burgdorferi and A. phagocytophilum, as demonstrated by their negative serological tests throughout the study and the absence of any positive skin biopsy culture or PCR in these dogs. 相似文献

Saturn's slow seasonal evolution was disrupted in 2010-2011 by the eruption of a bright storm in its northern spring hemisphere. Thermal infrared spectroscopy showed that within a month, the resulting planetary-scale disturbance had generated intense perturbations of atmospheric temperatures, winds, and composition between 20° and 50°N over an entire hemisphere (140,000 kilometers). The tropospheric storm cell produced effects that penetrated hundreds of kilometers into Saturn's stratosphere (to the 1-millibar region). Stratospheric subsidence at the edges of the disturbance produced "beacons" of infrared emission and longitudinal temperature contrasts of 16 kelvin. The disturbance substantially altered atmospheric circulation, transporting material vertically over great distances, modifying stratospheric zonal jets, exciting wave activity and turbulence, and generating a new cold anticyclonic oval in the center of the disturbance at 41°N. 相似文献

Ring species, which consist of two reproductively isolated forms connected by a chain of intergrading populations, have often been described as examples of speciation despite gene flow between populations, but this has never been demonstrated. We used amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to study gene flow in greenish warblers (Phylloscopus trochiloides). These genetic markers show distinct differences between two reproductively isolated forms but gradual change through the ring connecting these forms. The seeds of forbs, grass, and woody halophytes were collected from a cool moist temperate habitat of North America and subtropical maritime desert conditions of Karachi, Pakistan. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride concentrations as well as total ash content were determined. Ion concentrations of seeds are expressed both as relative values and on a dry weight basis. Plants were found to vary in the total ash content of seeds and the relative distribution of ions. In general, temperate forbs and grasses had lower ion content of seeds and several tropical shrub species had the highest ionic content. 相似文献

Seed germination and early growth of the halophyte Atriplex prostrata Boucher were measured to compare sodium chloride (NaCl) to other salts to determine if the inhibitory effects of salinity were osmotic or due to a specific ion inhibition. Seeds of A. prostrata were germinated in solutions containing NaCl, potassium chloride (KC1), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), and potassium sulfate (K2SO4) at concentrations with osmotic potentials equal to 0, ‐0.75, ‐1.0, and ‐1.5 MPa. Percent germination and shoot length was usually inhibited only at the lowest osmotic potential (‐1.5 MPa). However, at ‐1.5 MPa the rate of germination was more inhibited by sodium salts than by potassium salts. Ungerminated seeds pretreated with salts had recovery germination percentages in distilled water that were equal to that of the freshwater controls indicating that the previous effect of these salts was due to osmotic inhibition rather than a specific ion toxicity. 相似文献

CASE HISTORY: A skeletal disease characterised by dwarfism, limb deformity and sometimes sudden death occurred over a period of 5 years in lambs born on a commercial sheep farm in Southland. The disease showed variable expression and occurred in crossbred sheep. A genetic aetiology was supported by the birth of affected lambs over two seasons in a flock of putative carrier and affected sheep transported to Massey University. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Affected lambs appeared normal at birth but showed evidence of dwarfism, wide-based stance and exercise intolerance as early as 1 week of age. Most died within the first 3 months of life, often after developing bilateral varus deformity of the forelimbs. Some severely-affected lambs died suddenly of respiratory embarrassment, probably due to tracheal collapse. Mildly-affected individuals had a short, blocky stature and some survived to breeding age. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Gross and microscopic lesions of variable severity were present in the tracheal, articular, epiphyseal and physeal cartilages. In severe cases, articular cartilage in major joints was eroded from weight-bearing surfaces. The trachea was flaccid, abnormally kinked, and had thickened cartilaginous rings and a narrow lumen. Affected sheep that survived to breeding age eventually developed severe degenerative joint disease. Histologically, chondrocytes were disorganised, surrounded by concentric rings of abnormal fibrillar material, and the matrix often contained focal to coalescing areas of chondrolysis. DIAGNOSIS: Inherited chondrodysplasia of Texel sheep. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AND CONCLUSIONS: This chondrodysplasia differs from those previously described in sheep and is considered to be a newly-recognised, recessively-inherited genetic disease of the Texel breed. A defect in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans in cartilage matrix is suspected. Inherited rickets of Corriedale sheep is of simple autosomal recessive inheritance. The gross and histological lesions include segmental thickening of physes, persistence of hypertrophic chondrocytes at sites of endochondral ossification, excessive osteoclastic resorption, microfractures and wide unmineralised osteoid seams lining trabeculae and filling secondary osteons. Initial testing revealed concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 were normal, but those of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 were increased in serum of affected sheep, suggesting a defect in the vitamin D receptor. However, in vitro studies on cultured skin fibroblasts revealed normal binding and function of the vitamin D receptor. A genome-wide association study was conducted using the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip. A homozygous region of 199 consecutive single-nucleotide polymorphism loci was identified in affected sheep, covering a region of 10 megabase pairs on ovine chromosome 6. Of the 91 candidate genes in this region, dentin matrix protein 1 gene (dmp1) was considered the most likely as it is known to play critical roles in osteocyte maturation and mineral metabolism. Sequencing of DNA from carriers showed a nonsense mutation 253T/C in dmp1. This T/C transition introduced a stop codon (R145X) that could truncate C-terminal amino acids. Using PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism for this mutation, genotyping showed that all affected sheep were “TT” genotypes, and phenotypically normal sheep were either “CT” or “CC”. These findings suggest that a mutation in dmp1 is responsible for inherited rickets of Corriedale sheep. A simple diagnostic test is currently being designed to identify carriers with the defective “T” alleles. 相似文献
