Two experiments were performed in 2002 and 2003 to evaluate the effect of biological control of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep through the daily feeding of 500,000 chlamydospores of Duddingtonia flagrans/kg bodyweight to lactating ewes during the first 9 weeks with their young lambs on pasture. In both experiments four groups of eight ewes and their April-borne lambs were used. They were turned out on four separate plots (plots A) at the beginning of May, moved to similar separate plots after 3 (plots B) and 6 weeks (plots C), respectively, and weaning occurred after 9 weeks. In both experiments, two groups were fed spores daily while the two other groups served as controls. The effect of D. flagrans application was evaluated through faecal egg counts of ewes and lambs, the yield of faecal cultures in ewes, pasture larval counts and worm counts of lambs and tracer lambs. The results demonstrated no effect of D. flagrans application during the first 5 (2002) or 4 (2003) weeks. Subsequently, fungus application strongly reduced the yield in faecal cultures of the ewes. This was, however, not reflected in the pasture larval counts, but lower worm burdens were observed in tracer lambs of 'treated' plots C in 2002 than on those of 'control' plots. In 2003 worm burdens in 'treated' lambs returned to plots B were lower than those of 'control' lambs and a tendency for the same was observed for plots C. Forty streptomycete strains have been isolated into pure culture from two eroded zheltozems (yellow soils) of the Fujian province. Their antagonistic activities and contributions to the formation of soil resistome have been characterized. The estimation of the antimicrobial effect of natural isolates allowed revealing 6 strains simultaneously inhibiting the growth of the fungi Fusarium oxisporum, Alternaria alternata, Paecilomyces sp., Trichoderma sp., and Candida albicans. One strain (Streptomyces aburaviensis F2-6) with a wide range of antifungal actions was also active against the bacteria Pseudomonas putuda, P. fluorescens, P. sepacia, Streptococcus sp., and Escherichia coli. It has been shown that the share of isolates with a wide range of antimicrobial effects (44%) and a high antagonistic activity (77%) in zheltozem of the urban Zhangzhou district is significantly higher than in the soil of the village of Hongkeng (22 and 39%, respectively). According to the resistome concept, determinants of resistance to antibiotics first appeared in their producers; they can be transmitted to other bacteria in the soil due to horizontal drift. Tests of streptomycetes for resistance to antibiotics with different acting mechanisms (inhibitors of the synthesis of cytoderm, protein, and metabolic pathways) has shown that the share of cultures with multiple resistance in zheltozems does not exceed 25–31%. No resistance to all of the studied antibiotics is characteristic of 15–16% of the strains isolated from zheltozems. A review of the literature on stringhalt in horses is presented, including the aetiology, clinical signs, pathology and treatment of this disease. Three New Zealand outbreaks of stringhalt are reported and discussed. The occurrence of these (and most previously reported outbreaks) in the late summer and autumn, and the association of the disease with various weeds, indicates a likely toxic aetiology. 相似文献
1. An experiment was conducted to compare the natural resistance of an indigenous breed of local village chickens to Salmonella gallinarum with two commercial breeds: ISA Brown and ISA White layers under experimental conditions.
2. A total of 72 chickens from each of these breeds were randomly distributed to 4 pens to provide equal numbers of two replicate pens maintained as infected and control (uninfected). All chickens in infected groups were inoculated orally with 1 × 108 CFU (1 ml dose) of a field isolate of S. gallinarum, at the age of 8 and 16 weeks given over 5 consecutive days. Growth performance, clinical signs, gross pathological lesions and antibody responses were measured.
3. A significantly higher mortality was observed in the brown layers compared with the white layers, and clinical signs and mortality were absent in village chickens. However, a large number of birds with gross lesions and high antibody titres were detected in village chickens, indicating that birds had the disease subclinically. Commercial breeds had a significantly higher body weight, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency.
4. There was a significantly lower proportion of positive reactors in village chickens in the whole-blood agglutination test (35%) compared to brown (100%) and white (90%) layers even after the second inoculation. Uninfected birds were negative in all groups. The indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay confirmed these observations.
5. These results suggest that the indigenous breed had superior natural resistance to S. gallinarum than the commercial breeds. 相似文献
The haematological effect of ethanolic extract of Allium ascalonicum was evaluated in male albino rats during a 21 day administration at the doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w, orally. Parameters evaluated include the serum lipids, red and white cell indices. The results showed that the extract administered decreased most of the parameters relating to red cell and increased most of those parameters relating to white cells. It also decreased the total cholesterol (TCH), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) with no significant effect on the triglyceride levels. 相似文献

The detection of fast variations of the tera-electron volt (TeV) (10(12) eV) gamma-ray flux, on time scales of days, from the nearby radio galaxy M87 is reported. These variations are about 10 times as fast as those observed in any other wave band and imply a very compact emission region with a dimension similar to the Schwarzschild radius of the central black hole. We thus can exclude several other sites and processes of the gamma-ray production. The observations confirm that TeV gamma rays are emitted by extragalactic sources other than blazars, where jets are not relativistically beamed toward the observer. 相似文献
Summary In this study we evaluated the impact of five annual liquid sewage-sludge applications on the organic C and N content of a furrow-irrigated desert soil. Mineralization rates showed that sludge organic matter is mineralized rapidly (65% per year). Resistant residual sludge organic matter accumulation resulted in a theoretical increase in total soil organic C of 0.013% for the single sludge rate or 0.038% for three annual applications. These small additions were not detected in sludged soils at any depth to 270 cm. Similarly, increases in total soil N were not detected at any depth. However, soluble forms of organic C and N did increase in sludged soils relative to the non-sludged soils. In addition, soluble C:N ratios decreased significantly in the sludged soils. Soluble C and N also increased with depth due to leaching. This study therefore shows that applications of liquid sludge onto desert soils could affect the status of underground aquifers with respect to nitrate pollution. 相似文献
Institutional possibilities for improving co-operation in European animal production science is reviewed in this paper with emphasis on the situation in Western Europe. The paper is based on an address presented at the 25th annual meeting of the European Association for Animal Production in Copenhagen, August 1974. Activities of international organisations such as FAO, O.E.C.D. and E.E.C. in the field of agricultural research co-operation are mentioned as well as experience from formal co-operation between Scandinavian countries. It is argued that personal contact between research workers is of great importance, if the establishment of joint research programmes across national borders shall be a success. As suitable areas for international research co-operation, the new research areas with an urgent need for establishing a professional identity are mentioned. The importance of speeding up development of standards and methods so that weights and measures can be undertaken uniformly and meaningfully is underlined. It is suggested that the E.A.A.P. journal “Livestock Production Science” is likely to promote international research co-operation if the journal will undertake the function of providing information about possibilities of co-operation within animal production science in Europe. 相似文献
