Humoral mediation of radiation-induced motivation in parabiont rats

Parabiont rat pairs with a skin-vascular anastomosis were used to test for a radiation-induced transferable humoral factor which would motivate aversive conditioning in a nonirradiated (shielded) recipient. The shielded partner, by tasting saccharinflavored fluid shortly after its partner was x-irradiated (360 roentgens), was aversively conditioned to saccharin. This was interpreted as evidence for a humoral motivating factor.     

Sex matters in meiosis

In mammals, fertilization typically involves the ovulation of one or a few eggs at one end of the female reproductive tract and the entry of millions of sperm at the other. Given this disparity in numbers, it might be expected that the more precious commodity-eggs-would be subject to more stringent quality-control mechanisms. However, information from engineered mutations of meiotic genes suggests just the opposite. Specifically, the available mutants demonstrate striking sexual dimorphism in response to meiotic disruption; for example, faced with adversity, male meiosis grinds to a halt, whereas female meiosis soldiers on. This female "robustness" comes with a cost, however, because aneuploidy appears to be increased in the resultant oocytes.     

Unmasking the S-phase-promoting potential of cyclin B1

In higher eukaryotes, the S phase and M phase of the cell cycle are triggered by different cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). For example, in frog egg extracts, Cdk1-cyclin B catalyzes entry into mitosis but cannot trigger DNA replication. Two hypotheses can explain this observation: Either Cdk1-cyclin B fails to recognize the key substrates of its S-phase-promoting counterparts, or its activity is somehow regulated to prevent it from activating DNA synthesis. Here, we show that Cdk1-cyclin B1 has cryptic S-phase-promoting abilities that can be unmasked by relocating it from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and moderately stimulating its activity. Subcellular localization of vertebrate CDKs and the control of their activity are thus critical factors for determining their specificity.     

Adipsin: a circulating serine protease homolog secreted by adipose tissue and sciatic nerve

Adipsin is a serine protease homolog whose primary structure was predicted from the nucleotide sequence of a differentiation-dependent adipocyte messenger RNA. Immunoblots probed with antisera to synthetic peptides identify two forms of adipsin that are synthesized and secreted by 3T3 adipocytes. These proteins of 44 and 37 kilodaltons are converted to 25.5 kilodaltons by enzymatic deglycosylation. Although adipsin is principally synthesized in adipose tissue, it is also produced by sciatic nerve and is found in the bloodstream. Because of the apparent restriction of adipsin synthesis to tissues highly active in lipid metabolism, its presence in serum, and its modulation in altered metabolic states, this molecule may play a previously unrecognized role in systemic lipid metabolism or energy balance.     

The galilean satellites and jupiter: voyager 2 imaging science results

Voyager 2, during its encounter with the Jupiter system, provided images that both complement and supplement in important ways the Voyager 1 images. While many changes have been observed in Jupiter's visual appearance, few, yet significant, changes have been detected in the principal atmospheric currents. Jupiter's ring system is strongly forward scattering at visual wavelengths and consists of a narrow annulus of highest particle density, within which is a broader region in which the density is lower. On Io, changes are observed in eruptive activity, plume structure, and surface albedo patterns. Europa's surface retains little or no record of intense meteorite bombardment, but does reveal a complex and, as yet, little-understood system of overlapping bright and dark linear features. Ganymede is found to have at least one unit of heavily cratered terrain on a surface that otherwise suggests widespread tectonism. Except for two large ringed basins, Callisto's entire surface is heavily cratered.
