Computed tomography of the lumbosacral spine was performed on 22 purpose-bred, medium-sized hound dogs between 1 and 6 years of age. Images were evaluated to determine the degree of disc bulge. All dogs were neurologically normal. Dogs were imaged in dorsal recumbency with the pelvic limbs variably extended. Sagittal reconstructions were made from transverse images. The mean (+/-SD) width of the mid-portion of the L7-S1 intervertebral disc was 0.5 +/- 0.07 cm (range 0.33-0.62 cm). All L7-S1 intervertebral discs were dorsally convex, with the mean bulge measuring 0.25 +/- 0.07 cm (range 0.17-0.50 cm). The height of the vertebral canal at L7-S1 was 0.91 +/- 0.11 cm (range 0.68-1.15 cm). The mean percentage of the vertebral canal occupied by the bulge was 26.89 +/- 5.05% (range 20.74-43.08%). Mild bulging of the L7-S1 intervertebral disc can be present without associated neuropathy in medium-sized dogs.  相似文献

Pregelatinized starch is employed in many food applications due to the instantaneous nature of thickening and stability imparted by modification. Proteins, however, have been excluded as a viscosifying agent due to requisite thermal treatments required to create structure. Whey protein isolate gels were produced while manipulating heating time, pH, and mineral type/content, producing a variety of gel types/networks. Gels were frozen, freeze-dried, and ground into a powder. Once reconstituted in deionized water, gel powders were evaluated based on solubility studies, rotational viscometry, and electrophoresis. The protein powder exhibiting the largest apparent viscosity, highest degree of hydrolysis, and greatest solubility was selected for pH and temperature stability analyses and small amplitude oscillatory rheology. This processing technique manipulates WPI into a product capable of forming cold-set weak gel structures suitable for thickening over a wide range of temperature and pH food systems.  相似文献

A model of the global Hg cycle is presented and applied to analyze modern Hg budgets and historical changes in deposition. Our modeling suggests that mixing into the ocean interior is a significant sink of Hg and likely has limited any anthropogenically-caused increase in surface ocean Hg concentrations to about 50% above natural levels rather than 200% as has recently been argued. Additionally, both the increase in air pollutants during the industrial era and their recent decrease in North America likely have affected atmospheric Hg scavenging and the resulting records of Hg deposition rates in lake and bog sediments.  相似文献

The Japanese Yohkoh satellite is now in orbit observing the sun with a set of x-ray imagers and x-ray and gamma-ray spectrometers. The data from this successful mission provide new information on solar flares and the sun's corona. Intracellular sodium activities, (Na)c, were determined in Necturus small intestine before and after addition of galactose to the mucosal bathing solution. In the absence of galactose, (Na)c averaged 12 millimoles per liter. Within 2 minutes after the addition of galactose to the mucosal solution, (Na)c increased to a mean value of 20 millimoles per liter and then declined, in parallel with an increase in transcellular sodium transport, to a value that did not differ significantly from that observed in the absence of the sugar. The final steady state in the presence of galactose was characterized by a three- to fourfold increase in the rate of transcellular Na+ transport in the absence of a significant increase in (Na)c. Thus, the increase in steady-state basolateral pump activity cannot be attributed to an increase in the intracellular sodium transport pool.  相似文献

Posttranslational modifications of the histone octamer play important roles in regulating responses to DNA damage. Here, we reveal that Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rtt109p promotes genome stability and resistance to DNA-damaging agents, and that it does this by functionally cooperating with the histone chaperone Asf1p to maintain normal chromatin structure. Furthermore, we show that, as for Asf1p, Rtt109p is required for histone H3 acetylation on lysine 56 (K56) in vivo. Moreover, we show that Rtt109p directly catalyzes this modification in vitro in a manner that is stimulated by Asf1p. These data establish Rtt109p as a member of a new class of histone acetyltransferases and show that its actions are critical for cell survival in the presence of DNA damage during S phase.  相似文献

The inversion of previously reported, delay-Doppler images of Castalia yields a 167-parameter, three-dimensional shape model that is bifurcated into two distinct, irregular, kilometer-sized lobes. The crevice that separates the lobes has an average depth of between 100 and 150 meters and is oriented roughly perpendicular to the asteroid's longest dimension. The constrained least-squares reconstruction method introduced here can be used to determine the shape, spin vector, and radar-scattering properties of any asteroid or comet for which delay-Doppler images provide sufficient signal-to-noise ratio, orientational coverage, and spatial resolution.  相似文献
