Enhancement of cation diffusion rates across the 410-kilometer discontinuity in Earth's mantle

Rates of cation diffusion (magnesium, iron, and nickel) have been determined in olivine and its high-pressure polymorph, wadsleyite, at 9 to 15 gigapascals and 1100 degrees to 1400 degreesC for compositions that are relevant to Earth's mantle. Diffusion in olivine becomes strongly dependent on composition at high pressure. In wadsleyite, diffusion is one to two orders of magnitude faster than in olivine, depending on temperature. Homogenization of mantle heterogeneities (chemical mixing) and mineral transformations involving a magnesium-iron exchange will therefore occur considerably faster in the transition zone than at depths of less than 410 kilometers.     

Lateral fabellar fractures in the dog: A review of eight cases

Fractures of the lateral fabella were recorded in seven medium or large breed dogs. Six dogs had unilateral fractures and one had bilateral fractures. The fractures appeared to occur spontaneously, without external trauma. Four fractures were managed conservatively and four were treated by surgical removal of the fracture fragments. Both treatments were successful in resolving the lameness.     

Canine spinal 'arachnoid cysts'

The clinical and radiological findings of five cases of so-called spinal ‘arachnoid cysts’ in dogs are reported. Four cases presented with neurological syndromes suggestive of focal compression of the spinal cord whereas one was clinically asymptomatic. The diagnosis was confirmed in each case by myelography and supported, in three instances, by histopathology. Evidence of spinal dysraphism was common to these cases. The findings are discussed in relation to four previously described cases.     

Fertility of sows mated on different days of the week

The farrowing rates resulting from matings on different days of the week were determined for a 2800-sow intensive piggery in both 1983 and 1984. The results showed that sows mated early in the week achieved a significantly higher farrowing rate than sows mated late in the week (P less than 0.0001). During the seasonal (summer to autumn) infertility period, Wednesday matings resulted in a poor farrowing rate whereas for the rest of the year farrowing rates following Wednesday matings were similar to those for Sunday Monday and Tuesday matings. Consistent results were obtained for data from both years. It is proposed that the stress of regrouping unmated sows on Wednesday to accommodate newly weaned sows is responsible for this decrease in fertility. This study illustrates how detailed analysis of farrowing rates on a day of mating basis can identify a problem which is otherwise masked by weekly data.     

Tumours involving the nerve sheaths of the forelimb in dogs

Nerve sheath tumours were diagnosed in 10 dogs over a three-year period. The age at presentation ranged from three to 12 years (mean 6-3 years) and the sexes were equally represented. All the dogs were of medium to large breeds. The cases were assigned to two distinct clinical groups, which corresponded with the location of the neoplasia. One group presented as a chronic progressive, unilateral forelimb lameness; these dogs had peripherally located tumours. The other group had an acute onset of signs associated with spinal cord compression without previous forelimb signs. These were associated with tumours at the level of the spinal nerve roots.     

Restriction-endonuclease analysis of Australian isolates of Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo from cattle with agalactia and abortion

SUMMARY Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and agarose gel electrophoresis were used to resolve restriction endonuclease digests of 20 Australian isolates of Leptospira interrogans cultured from urine samples of cattle with agalactia and abortion. The restriction endonuclease profiles of 19 isolates closely matched the profiles of L interrogans serovar hardjo subtype hardjobovis reference strains. The remaining isolate had a different restriction profile from subtype hardjobovis and subtype hardjoprajitno reference strains and was serologically identified as serovar pomona. Silver staining of polyacrylamide gels gave enhanced resolution of restriction fragments compared with the traditional method of ethidium bromide staining of agarose gels.     

Repair of femoral trochanteric osteotomy in the dog

The records and radiographs of 24 dogs that underwent femoral trochanteric osteotomy repair were reviewed. Osteotomy repair was performed with either a pin and tension band wire or a lag screw technique. Significant clinical complications associated with the osteotomy were identified in one dog (4 per cent) six weeks after surgery, although abnormal radiographic changes were evident in 15 dogs (62 per cent). The method of repair did not influence healing and there were comparable radiographic complication rates. It Is concluded that femoral trochanteric osteotomy Is not associated with significant clinical problems, despite a high incidence of abnormal radiographic findings.
