Monolayers of rare gas atoms adsorbed onto the basal planes of graphite play the same prototype role in two dimensions that rare gas liquids and solids do in three dimensions. In recent experiments such novel phenomena as continuous melting, the lack of true crystallinity in two dimensions, orientationally ordered fluid phases, and melting from a solid to a reentrant fluid with decreasing temperature have been observed. Because the forces in these rare gas monolayers are simple and well understood, by studying them the investigator can examine a direct interface between experiment and first principles. In order to understand the phases and phase transitions that occur in such materials, it is necessary to consider the geometrical matching of the rare gas overlayer to the graphite substrate. It turns out that in two dimensions both the local and the long-distance behavior are important. These two-dimensional rare gas solids may be effectively probed with synchrotron x-ray techniques, and the results of a series of synchrotron x-ray scattering studies of these solids are presented. 相似文献

Vegetated buffer zones (BZs) between arable fields and bodies of water are commonly established to reduce erosion and run‐off of particle‐bound nutrients. Functioning of a BZ depends on soil structure, as it is important for water infiltration. Therefore, it is vital to understand how varying management practices affect soils of BZs. We studied the structural and hydraulic properties of three differently managed BZs established in a boreal Vertic Stagnic Cambisol (clay, 51%). The three management practices for vegetation were as follows: natural with no treatment, harvested yearly and grazed by cattle. We used bulk density and macroporosity, together with a pore geometry index (air permeability per unit air‐filled porosity), to describe the soil structural properties. Hydraulic properties were measured at different length scales by means of an aggregate sorptivity test, saturated hydraulic conductivity of the core samples and field‐saturated hydraulic conductivity. Vegetation management markedly affected the physical properties in the top 5 cm of the soil. Properties were least favourable for infiltration at the grazed site, with the greatest bulk density, least macroporosity and hydraulic conductivity or greatest pore tortuosity. In general, spatial variation in zones with restricted and good hydraulic conductivity together with reduced aggregate sorptivity in the deeper horizons made the soil prone to preferential flow when initially dry. Prolonged wetness, on the other hand, reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity significantly, resulting in surface run‐off. Harvesting was considered the best management practice due to its inherent capacity for reducing the soil nutrient content and because it has minor implications for soil physical properties. 相似文献

Mechanized harvesting procedures for typical forest vehicles were analysed to examine soil stresses and displacements occurring in soil profiles and to reveal changes in physical properties of forest soils. All field experiments were carried out under traffic lanes of standard forest vehicles in forest stands of the southern Black Forest. The soil stresses were determined using stress state transducers (SST) and displacement transducer systems (DTS) at depths of 20 and 40 cm. Complete harvesting and trunk-logging processes with a total time span of 9 min were observed. The maximum vertical stresses for all experiments exceeded 200 kPa; some experiments showed maximum vertical stresses up to 500 kPa or more at a depth of 20 cm. To evaluate the impact of soil stresses on soil structure, the internal soil strength was determined by predicting the precompression stress. Comparison of soil stress data with the natural bearing capacity of the natural forest soil proves that sustainable traffic is not possible, irrespective of the vehicle type and the working process. Topsoil and subsoil compaction, an increase in the precompression stresses, deep rutting and vertical as well as horizontal soil displacement associated with shearing effects took place and affected the mechanical strength and the physical properties of forest soils. Considering these results, heavy forest machinery has a severe impact on soil physical properties such as air, heat, water fluxes and rootability. In order to sustain the present undamaged soil condition, a change in harvest logistics and organisation is necessary.
