Objectives : To evaluate contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography (CEU) and colour Doppler imaging (CDI) for detection of persistent vascularisation in retinal detachment. Methods : In 22 eyes, retinal detachment (n=13) and vitreous membranes (n=9) were confirmed by ophthalmological examination, during cataract surgery, by histopathology or after vitreoretinal surgery. Tentative diagnosis of retinal detachment or vitreous membrane was made using grey‐scale B‐mode ultrasonography. Assessment of retinal detachment was based on the presence or absence of vascularisation in the membranous structure using CDI and CEU. Results : Sensitivity, specificity, positive‐predictive value and negative‐predictive value of grey‐scale ultrasonography in differentiating retinal detachment from vitreous membrane were 92·3%, 66·6%, 80% and 85·7%. In 91% of eyes, colour Doppler assessment was unsuccessful due to the movement of the eye. Persistent vascularisation was demonstrated in all cases of retinal detachments with CEU. CEU was 100% accurate for detection and differentiation between retinal detachment and vitreous membrane. Clinical Significance : CEU is a useful clinical tool for the diagnosis of retinal detachment and vitreous membrane in dogs and cats.  相似文献

Interactions occurring during the surfactant-enhanced foliar uptake of seven model organic compounds were examined using two homogeneous surfactants, hexaethylene glycol monotridecyl ether (C13E6) and hexadecaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E16). Surfactant–compound and compound–surfactant interactions were detected by measurement of their relative uptake rates following application of c. 0·2 μl droplets of the corresponding radiolabelled formulations. The magnitude of surfactant–compound interaction was found to vary according to the physicochemical properties of both the compound and the surfactant, and was influenced by surfactant concentration and target plant species. Interactive and non-interactive mechanisms, both leading to substantial enhancement of compound uptake, could be identified, but their precise nature could not be elucidated. Although penetration of C13E6 into the site of application appeared to be essential in order to activate the uptake of a compound, substantial absorption of C12E16 was not always required to produce the same effect. The results are discussed in the light of possible sites and modes of action for activator polyoxyethylene surfactant adjuvants.  相似文献

There is a wide variety of cancer types yet, all share some common cellular and molecular behaviors. Most of the chemotherapeutic agents used in cancer treatment are designed to target common deregulated mechanisms within cancer cells. Many healthy tissues are also affected by the cytotoxic effects of these chemical agents. Fucoidan, a natural component of brown seaweed, has anti-cancer activity against various cancer types by targeting key apoptotic molecules. It also has beneficial effects as it can protect against toxicity associated with chemotherapeutic agents and radiation. Thus the synergistic effect of fucoidan with current anti-cancer agents is of considerable interest. This review discusses the mechanisms by which fucoidan retards tumor development, eradicates tumor cells and synergizes with anti-cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Challenges to the development of fucoidan as an anti-cancer agent will also be discussed.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted with mature cows to develop prediction equations for estimating carcass composition from live animal measurements. Trial 1 involved 82 animals that were used to develop these equations. Subjective criteria (frame and condition scores) also were utilized along with live weight in development of prediction equations. Equations using subjective independent variables predicting energy and carcass tissue weights apparently were slightly more variable in precision (R2 = .69 to .91) than those developed with objective variables (R2 = .74 to .90). Equations predicting percent compositions from subjective variables had lower coefficients of determination (R2 = .49 to .76) than those developed with objective variables (R2 = .63 to .83). Forty-one animals similar to those used in Trial 1 served as a test group in Trial 2. Measured carcass composition was regressed on composition predicted by equations developed in Trial 1. These equations generally had slopes and intercepts with confidence intervals that included 0 and 1, respectively, indicating that most of the prediction equations were unbiased. This work indicates that carcass composition can be predicted from both objective and subjective measurements, with some accuracy and precision.  相似文献

Soil compaction was assessed in terms of soil strength as measured with a penetrometer. Penetrometer resistance was measured on virgin soil and on the same soil after one and after five passes of a 7,610 kg tractor. Also, comparative studies were made of strength profiles of soils in arable fields and in adjacent areas of virgin soil. The strength of virgin soil was increased by wheel traffic and agricultural operations in all cases. The increase in soil strength was significant down to 0.3 m, which is considerably greater than the normal depth of tillage in the area (0.05 m). Reduction in the coefficient of variation of penetrometer strengths after the passage of wheels was taken as evidence for associated losses of soil structure. Virgin soils provide important reference sites for assessing the impact of agriculture in an area.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate‐resistant (GR) weed species are now found with increasing frequency and threaten the critically important GR weed management system. RESULTS: The reported 31P NMR experiments on glyphosate‐sensitive (S) and glyphosate‐resistant (R) horseweed, Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq., show significantly more accumulation of glyphosate within the R biotype vacuole. CONCLUSIONS: Selective sequestration of glyphosate into the vacuole confers the observed horseweed resistance to glyphosate. Benign stricture is an uncommon cause of chronic small intestinal obstruction in the cat. The purpose of this retrospective case series was to describe the ultrasonographic features, histopathological findings, and clinical presentation in a group of cats with benign small intestinal stricture. Inclusion criteria were cats presenting during the period 2010‐2017, and that had ultrasonography and small intestinal stricture confirmed at surgery. For each cat, clinical data and ultrasonographic findings were retrieved from the medical record, and histopathology, where available, was reviewed. Eight cats met the inclusion criteria. The location of strictures was duodenum (1/8), mid‐ to distal jejunum (4/8), and ileum (3/8). Ultrasonographic findings included gastric distension (8/8) and generalized (3/8) or segmental (5/8) intestinal dilation consistent with mechanical obstruction. Ingesta did not propagate beyond the strictured segment. Wall thickening was mild to moderate (3‐6 mm). Normal wall layering was disrupted in all cats. Strictures were predominantly hypoechoic (7/8) and associated with hyperechoic peri‐intestinal mesentery (6/8). Annular strictures (5/8) were less than 15 mm in length whereas long‐segment strictures (3/8) were greater than 15 mm in length. Histopathology showed transmural disease with fibrosis and inflammation (8/8), often (6/8) extending into the bordering mesentery. The mucosa was the most severely affected layer and epithelial injury accompanied the mucosal fibrosis/inflammation. Clinical presentation reflected delayed diagnosis of chronic bowel obstruction with debilitation (8/8), marked weight loss (8/8), and prerenal azotemia (5/8). Benign fibrostenotic stricture should be considered a differential diagnosis in debilitated young cats presenting with chronic bowel disease and ultrasonographic features of intestinal obstruction.  相似文献
