The cervical spines of 6 horses with cervical stenotic myelopathy (CSM) were examined using myelography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Histopathology of the spinal cord of these horses identified 10 neurologically significant compressive lesions. Myelography and CECT were both able to demonstrate all 10 spinal cord compressive lesions, but myelography falsely identified 2 sites and CECT falsely identified 1 site as compressive lesions of the spinal cord which were not supported by histopathology. Additional qualitative information was obtained by CECT regarding the source, severity and location of spinal cord compression. Computed tomography identified stenosis of the vertebral canal with circumferential loss of contrast agent and documented lateral compressive lesions of the spinal cord due to malformed articular facets. Compression of the peripheral nerve roots by malformed articular facets encroaching on the intervertebral foramen was easily identified by CECT in the axial plane. No compressive lesions were identified in 3 unaffected horses by either method. Minimum sagittal diameter (MSD) values obtained from CECT images were strongly correlated with necropsy measurements, validating CECT as an accurate method of obtaining MSD values. The MSD values in the CSM-affected horses were significantly narrowed (P less than 0.05) from C3C6 regardless of the site of spinal cord compression, when compared with the unaffected controls. This finding supports previous reports suggesting that generalised stenosis of the vertebral canal is an important feature in the pathogenesis of cervical stenotic myelopathy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prolonged exercise by conditioned sled dogs affects urine concentrations of homovanillic acid (a metabolite of dopamine), vanillylmandelic acid (a metabolite of norepinephrine and epinephrine), and cortisol. ANIMALS: 24 conditioned Alaskan sled dogs (2 to 8.5 years old) that were in training for a multiday endurance race. PROCEDURES: Voided urine samples were collected from 4 groups of dogs (randomly selected from 54 dogs) after no exercise (control group; n = 6 dogs), completion of a 160km run (group A; 3), completion of a 420-km run (group B; 7), and completion of a 560-km run (group C; 6). Urine cortisol concentrations were determined by use of an immunoassay technique; urine vanillylmandelic acid and homovanillic acid concentrations were measured via high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, urine cortisol concentration in groups A, B, and C was significantly different (5.33 x 10(4) +/- 2.62 x 10(4) microg/dL vs 1.04 x 10(4) +/- 2.31 x 10(5) microg/dL, 8.88 x 10(4) +/- 5.49 x 10(4) microg/dL, and 6.31 x 10(4) +/- 5.09 x 10(4) microg/dL, respectively). Urine homovanillic acid concentration did not differ among the 4 groups. Vanillylmandelic acid was not detected in any urine samples. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that prolonged exercise by sled dogs did not affect urine homovanillic acid concentration but did increase urinary cortisol secretion, which is indicative of adrenocortical stimulation. The apparent lack of vanillylmandelic acid in voided urine samples requires further investigation.  相似文献

Above- and belowground phenology and water relations of Enterolobium cyclocarpum Jacq. trees in the dry forest of Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica were studied during two consecutive phenological cycles, from November 1998 to June 2000. Aboveground phenological activity, including leaf shedding, growth and maturation of dormant fruits, new leaf flushing and flowering, occurred during the dry season. Measurements of leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and sap flow indicated that stomata of newly flushed leaves remained essentially closed until the onset of the first rains, suggesting that the main factor accounting for the favorable water balance of dry-season flushed leaves was their capacity to restrict water loss. Evidence of a contribution from stem and root water stores to shoot expansion was mixed because only the first dry-season flushing episode monitored was accompanied by a marked decrease in stem and root water potentials. Fine root production did not precede leaf flushing, occurred only after the onset of the rainy season and stopped under drought conditions, suggesting that soil water content was the most important variable controlling fine root dynamics in this species.  相似文献

Among annual plants, daily transpiration rates, expressed as a fraction of volumetric soil water content available for transpiration, show a common pattern in response to soil drying. Initially, as soil dries, there is little decrease in transpiration rate until water availability has fallen to about one third that at field capacity. With further soil drying, relative transpiration rate decreases in a more-or-less linear fashion until all available water has been used. Data previously obtained for perennial woody species have often been confounded by different methods for determining available soil water. In this study, we investigated the daily transpiration response to soil drying in five woody perennial species: Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don, Acer rubrum L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Hibiscus sp. and Ibex aquifolium L. Transpiration was unaffected by soil drying until the initial estimated transpirable soil water fraction had decreased to between 0.23 and 0.32 of that at field capacity. Beyond this point, transpiration rate declined linearly with available soil water fraction until reaching one fifth the rate observed in well-watered plants. With further soil drying, the relative transpiration rates remained between 10 and 20% of that observed in well-watered plants. Maintenance of transpiration at these rates with further soil drying was hypothesized to result from contributions to transpiration of water stored in plant tissues. After taking tissue water storage into account, it was estimated that transpiration was curtailed as the available soil water fraction fell to between 0.26 and 0.37 of that at field capacity, which is comparable to values reported for annual crop plants.  相似文献

An electronic system that recorded feeding activity was used in replicated trials conducted to evaluate 25Solarium cultivars and 1Pelargonium (geranium) cultivar for acceptability to the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The number of probes and the time spent in probing were found to be indicators of relative acceptability; the number of feedings and the time spent in feeding were not. Although tests as brief as 15 min were useful in screeningSolarium germplasm for resistance to the green peach aphid, 30 min tests were deemed more reliable. An index of acceptability was prepared by using the potato variety Katahdin as a standard for comparison.  相似文献

美国花生基因库中收集了8000多份种质材料,这些种质材料含有丰富的遗传多样性。然而,这些多样性在育种研究中未能得到充分的评价和广泛的应用,为促进整个花生种质库的开发利用,建立了以A.hypogaea为核心的种质,美国花生种质库首先按来源国别分类,然后再根据种质其它信息量及各来源国种质数目分成9个部分,核心种质中的70%采用上述方法获得,依来源国别分类,进而就形态学数据资料进行多变分量分析,对种质聚类,然后从每组中随机抽取10%的样品,因为有一些种质缺乏形态学数据资料,因此,该种质中的29%是通过按来源国别分类后再随机抽取10%的样品方法进行选择的,剩余的1%是一个简单的随机样品,花生核心种质的建立使种质评价方面的研究明显增多,几组研究者已经对核心种质的24个特征进行了评价,针对几种重要的病源,已鉴定出一部分抗源,利用抗花生晚斑病和根结线虫病的数据资料评价了两阶段核心筛选的方法在鉴定整个种质库中抗性的有效性,两项研究明确证实,核心种质法可用以提高种质评价效率。  相似文献

We investigated phloem-xylem interactions in Acer rubrum L. and Acer saccharum Marsh. Our experimental method allowed us to determine xylem conductance of an intact branch by measuring the flow rate of water supplied at two delivery pressures to the cut end of a small side branch. We found that removal of bark tissue (phloem girdling) upstream of the point at which deionized water was delivered to the branch resulted in a decrease (24% for A. rubrum and 15% for A. saccharum) in branch xylem hydraulic conductance. Declines in hydraulic conductance with girdling were accompanied by a decrease in the osmotic concentration of xylem sap. The decrease in xylem sap concentration following phloem girdling suggests that ion redistribution from the phloem was responsible for the observed decline in hydraulic conductance. When the same measurements were made on branches perfused with KCl solution (approximately 140 mOsm kg(-1)), phloem girdling had no effect on xylem hydraulic conductance. These results suggest a functional link between phloem and xylem hydraulic systems that is mediated by changes in the ionic content of the cell sap.  相似文献

In peanuts, a mechanism of resistance to fungal infection is reportedly due to the synthesis of stilbene phytoalexins, which are antibiotic, low molecular weight metabolites. The phytoalexin-associated response of different peanut genotypes to exogenous invasion in the field has not been investigated and may be useful for breeding resistant peanut cultivars. Five peanut genotypes, Georgia Green, Tifton 8, C-99R, GK-7 High Oleic, and MARC I, which differ in resistance to major peanut diseases, were investigated for their ability to produce phytoalexins under field conditions in South Georgia in 2001 and 2002. Five known peanut phytoalexins, trans-resveratrol, trans-arachidin-1, trans-arachidin-2, trans-arachidin-3, and trans-3'-isopentadienyl-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, were quantitated. The phytoalexins were measured in peanuts of different pod maturity (yellow, orange, brown, and black) with or without insect pod damage (externally scarified or penetrated). Kernels from insect-damaged pods of C-99R and Tifton 8 genotypes had significantly higher concentrations of phytoalexins than other genotypes. The same genotypes were the most resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus and late leaf spot, while MARC I, which is highly susceptible to these diseases, produced very low concentrations of phytoalexins. However, there was no significant difference in phytoalexin production by undamaged peanut pods of all tested genotypes. trans-Arachidin-3 and trans-resveratrol were the major phytoalexins produced by insect-damaged peanuts. In damaged seeds, the concentrations of trans-3'-isopentadienyl-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene were significantly higher in Tifton 8 as compared to other genotypes. There was an association between total phytoalexin production and published genotype resistance to major peanut diseases. Stilbene phytoalexins may be considered potential chemical markers in breeding programs for disease-resistant peanuts.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific triploid hybrids were obtained betweenArachis hypogaea L. andA. stenosperma Krapov. and W.C. Gregory by adopting hybridization coupled with rescue of the developing hybrid embryos. Two hexaploid hybrid populations were generated from triploids, somatically doubled (SD) and sexually polyploidized (SP) hexaploids. Microscopic screening for the occurrence of 2n gametes in triploid hybrids was useful to predict the production of spontaneous hexaploids. In order to facilitate maximum intergenomic recombination, the hexaploids were allowed to self for several generations (F4) in the greenhouse. Prolific vegetative growth, pollen stainability, and seed set were observed to decline with each selfed generation. Individuals of the F3 generation from the two hexaploid populations were evaluated for resistance to nematode (Meloidogyne arenaria Chitwood, race 1) and late leafspotCercosporidium personatum (Berk. & Curt.) Deighton under greenhouse conditions. Both SD and SP populations performed significantly better than their cultivated parent, Sunbelt Runner, and a susceptible cultivar, Florunner. At the DNA level, no significant differences were detected among hybrid individuals using cDNA clones and RAPD primers polymorphic for the two parents. Seven cDNA clones were used to probe DNA from 17 F2 individuals and two parents and 45 RAPD primers were used to amplify DNA from 21 F2 and F3 individuals. No significant differences in banding patterns were observed among hybrid individuals which suggested that little or no detectable intergenomic recombination had occurred.  相似文献
